Anyone else struggle to make a Top 10 best anime list? How do you do it?

I’ve seen a ton of anime and every time I try to make a Top 10, I keep swapping shows around or feel like I’m leaving something important out.

Some anime just feel unfair to compare because they’re so different.

A top 10 list is always personal preference. Ignore everyone else, their opinion is irrelevant to your list. Do it how you feel

specs_3212026-01-13 05:18

Yeah, I agree it’s ultimately personal preference. I think what I struggle with is how to rank things when different anime hit in completely different ways

Just comes down to which one you would rewatch the most. My top 1,2,4,5 are romance and/or action and 3 is Evangelion lol

Track and rate the ones you've seen via MAL, Anilist, etc. That way you won't forget any and will have a narrower list to choose from.

I see you’re a big science fiction fan

Playest_42472026-01-13 05:19

What's funny is I wouldn't say so.

But number 11 is Ghost in the shell so maybe I am.

Decide if you're trying to judge on wholistic quality or what you remember and care about the most. Go from there imo.

rmcartist2026-01-13 05:10

Why bother? Does it make you like them any more or less? Besides, new ones are always coming. Just enjoy life.

It's really hard to make a 10 anime list, because some anime will be left out. When I have to pick my 9th and 10th favorite anime it gets hard, and I get tempted to go for top 20, in the end it depends on how I feel that particular day.

It's definitely easier to separate it by genres or type of shows, like top 10 action, top 10 romance, top 10 slice of life, etc.

steins gate is number one, the rest can fight for the spoils

Playest_42472026-01-13 05:12

It's really really tough, I did this recently by starting with a personal top 100 list and slowly whittling it down. You have to figure out how you want to handle big franchises and think about movies vs series.

At the end of the day you have to ask which shows you come back to over and over and which do you find yourself recommending more often

specs_3212026-01-13 05:26

I agree Top 100 sounds less stressful, but I feel like the real pain starts when you’re trimming it down to the Top 10 or 15. That’s where everything feels very difficult to rank.

Playest_42472026-01-13 05:27

It's BRUTAL

Free-Joe-Goldberg2026-01-13 05:12

I just look at MyAnimeList and then pick 10 anime I’d keep if I could only watch 10 the rest of my life.

Moshimoshi-Megumin2026-01-13 05:20

I keep a note where I rate every anime when I finish it. I don’t have very defined criteria, just an overall score based on how entertaining or emotional it was. If I had to get a top 10, I’d just get the ones at the top :)

Neverknowsbest20252026-01-13 05:21

I've never been able to do this with anything I watch or enjoy. I always have two lists, things I liked and things I didn't. I like some things more that others but I was never able to list them out and rate them like this.

Ill_Reference5822026-01-13 05:23

Shit. When people want you to rate your anime and pick a favorite; it's impossible for me

washijyazo_2026-01-13 07:24

No one's forcing you to keep it to 10, it's just a number like any other.
I made myself a top 65 ranked, with extended unranked list going to around top 200.
You can also make separate rankings for different genres, or decades if you want, instead of just one.

Salty1452026-01-13 11:50

Conviction.

Brokenpipeisbroken2026-01-13 12:55

Gather up all anime you consider as masterpiece (if you have MAL or any other list it's easy), then choose 10. After that, look at other titles and consider if you would like to swap something. If yes then swap, if no then gg - you have top 10 list.

> Some anime just feel unfair to compare because they’re so different

Compare 2 titles and ask yourself which one would you remove from anime history if you were forced to. The one you choose will be the worse one.

More-Explanation20322026-01-13 16:49

I haven’t watched a lot of anime to pick my top 10 really

saga9992026-01-13 18:41

I don't make top 10 lists at all. The tier system is superior.
