My Thoughts on Wandance
I did NOT expect to here Scatman John in the first damn episode of this anime. They played almost the entire song. I'm aware that Scatman is very popular in Japan, it's one of the most famous examples of the "Big In Japan" meme, but that still caught me off guard, in a good way. This anime was pretty good. It's about a socially awkward, shy boy wiht a stutter named Kaboku Kotani. He loves dancing, but has no confidnece. But when he meets a girl named Hikari Wanda he's inspired to break out of his shell and join the dance club. And that's pretty much it. I'm not sure if the relationship between them is meant to be teasing a potential romantic turn later or if it will remain purely platonic, I'm honestly fine iwht it either way, I think they have good chemistry regardless of which route the author takes with it. They're both fantastic characters. Kaboku is incredibly sympathetic and relatable, and Hikari is cute and likable and compliments him well. They stand out the most, but there's no explicitly unlikable characters. There was even a female character that I was skeptical on when she was first introduced because she was clearly jealous and mad that she wasn't chosen to be part of the dance team. I expected this to get super melodramatic and overly drawn out, but it was fully solved within the same scene, and I loved it. it was refreshing, and just generally very good.
The one terrible thing about this anime? The CGI dance scenes. Seriously, I really enjoyed everything surrounding them, but the dance scenes, which take up a good portion of the show, are entirely animated with CGI, and it is BAD CGI. Like some of the worst I've seen in recent years. Now I get why they might want to animate the dance scenes on a computer rather than hand drawing them all, since they contained a lot of complex, fluid movements, so using CGI would probably make those moments easier, quicker, not to mention cheaper, to animate. And to be fair you definitely get the fluidity in the CGI dance scenes, but it looses a lot of detail and the characters frequently go off model and not in a good way. Many anime will use CGI at a distance so it's harder to notice. Here it's right up in your face, so you notice every awful flaw. It's the one huge blemish on an otherwise good anime. But even without that I don't think it would be great. I think it had the potential to be, but it's kind of fast paced, and not everything is completely resolved by the end, but I still liked it quite a bit.

People meme on its use of Scatman in the first episode, but I loved how they utilized it. It was perfect for helping Kabo realize he could use performance art to express himself despite his speech impediment, just like Scatman John.
maybe it would have been better if it’s a live action there’s a lot of great dancers in Japan.
