Can someone help explain the timeline and answer my questions about Code Geass?

So I’m watching all of *Code Geass* right now, and I’m currently on **Akito the Exiled 3: The Brightness Falls**. I can see that Lelouch isn’t actually dead. People say this part takes place between R1 and R2, but Suzaku is with Lelouch and isn’t attacking him, which is confusing me. I’m not really sure what’s going on timeline-wise. The *Code Geass* movies 2 and 3 also confused me a lot.

Lelouch is under Charles geass at this time and Suzaku is keeping an eye on him to make sure his memories don’t return. It’ll be explained more in R2.

The movies and anime are 2 different canons essentially.

Basically think of it like this:

R1 anime -> Akito -> R2

Lelouch Movie 1 - 3 -> Resurrection -> Roze (Akito and some characters from spin off games show up but hardly matter in the anime so don’t worry)

The timeline is kind of a mess. The Code Geass R1 and R2 anime are their own things. Code Geass movie 1 recaps the events of R1 and R2 but exist in their own universe where Lelouch and Shirley live. Code Geass movie 2 (Lelouch of the Resurrection) is the sequel that thematically concludes Lelouch's story. Code Geass movie 3 (Rozé of the Recapture) is the direct sequel to movie 2 but not feature Lelouch as the MC (and the story kinda sucks). Code Geass: Akito the Exiled has a confusing story and equally confusing placement in the timeline so it's better to ignore it.

My advice, watch the original R1 and R2 anime then watch Lelouch of the Resurrection to get the thematic conclusion to Lelouch's journey and call it quits with Code Geass. Everything else sucks.
