Any Depressing Movie Recommendations?

Does anybody have any preferably depressing movie recommendations? I have Prime, Netflix, and CrunchyRoll.

I have seen A Silent Voice but many, many years ago so I’ll have to rewatch. Other than that, I’m open to recommendations! I am also open to other genres but more looking for something gut-wrenching.

Hi kahlumi, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

You might also find our [Recommendation Wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/recommendations) or [daily thread](/r/anime/search?q=flair%3Adaily&restrict_sr=on&sort=new&t=week) helpful.

Grave of the fireflies - possibly the saddest movie ever made.

Such a great movie, a bit old tho

kahlumi2026-01-13 13:44

This seems like a perfect recommendation! I love Studio Ghibli from what I’ve seen so far from them, so I’m excited to watch. Thank you :)

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas (this is the actual title; no, it's not cannibalism; it's a Japanese idiom)

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this one! Thank you for reminding me, I’ll definitely watch this tonight :)

Grave of fireflies (Watch it)
Garden of words (Not depressing at all but a good watch if u can understand their emotions and how both of them think about each other)

Madoka Magica.

Also, not a movie, but it's just 12 episodes, so not that long - SukaSuka, or WorldEnd. It is on crunchy.
