how does Attack on Titan hold up for you?
It’s been a while since Attack on Titan officially ended, and now that the hype and recency bias have died down, I was curious to see how people feel about it looking back.
How do you feel about the series as a whole now?
Did the ending age better or worse for you over time?
Is it still one of your favourite anime, or did it drop in your personal rankings?

The show still holds up great and I feel it will be timeless.
Though some of those ODM scenes in the first 3 seasons were pretty tight and I could see them standing the test of time.
Yeah, I thought the ending was quite thematic of the whole show. A different ending (especially when people were still clamoring for an anime original ending before the specials) I think would have been a copout and would have been a lot worse imo.

I agree as well.
2ish years is still fairly recent in the grand scheme of things tbh.
My thoughts on AoT has remained mostly the same. When it’s good, it’s really good, but it is also wildly inconsistent season to season, and it’s not helped by a season and two specials that sort of end the show on a whimper.
The setting is interesting, but it really feels like the author didn’t think it through and ends up doing a lot of pivoting to try to set up whatever he scrounges up next. The characters work better in the dark Shounen first three seasons, then they do in the grittier last act and some of MAPPA’s reaction faces are more comical than serious. The weaker seasons kind of go in one ear and out the other, which is a shame given that the more focused ones are golden.
At the end of the day, I think it was an enjoyable watch, partially for its rough spots, but I still do think people calling it a masterpiece or prop it up like some pinnacle of storytelling have been drinking a little too much of the Kool-Aid.
As for the animation style, yeah MAPPA's parts are visibly inferior to the WIT Studio's part.
Like the titans arent being caused by some supernatural entity but instead its manufactured and that is boring.
Now, I mean, I still hate the ending, I don't think it makes sense. That said, I think my hate for AOT as a whole though has mellowed out. The series was very important in getting me back into anime, and considering how much I now have seen since then, it holds a special place there. And in the end, S1-S3 Part 2 are still incredibly good action works on their own. Even S4, which I now hold more reservations regarding it, knowing where it goes, was great when the manga was airing. I just really don't like that last arc, and how everything was resolved. Welp headcanons are a thing.....
It was a top 25 work for me, maybe even top 10, at it's peak. Now, I do kinda notice more problems, even in the arcs I liked. Still, I probably just need to do a full rewatch one of these days, with the hype and hate set aside, and just evaluate it without any expectations.
Edit: also I’m pretty sure the goal was to get paradis and the rest of what remained of the world on the same level.
Do you really think the rest of the world would accept that? This is literally a story about dehumanization, who cares what a bunch of Eldians did, to stop their own crazed mass murdering Eldian monster. Like this is literally the plot of CG, and again, if that was the goal, Eren didn't need to slaughter most of the world, to allow his friends to play hero. I am okay with this kind of ending however, Eren does way way too much damage for this narrative to be acceptable to most non Eldians, who would want personal revenge, not some hero story. Everyone in that world likely lost maybe half of their family if not more, due to Eren. The Eldians confirmed their own monsterhood to most of the world, as now everyone has been impacted in one way or another in an apocalyptic way.
>The future that Isayama showed was that as long as there’s humans on this planet, there will always be conflict
Sure like I don't what know what he meant by the final pages/epilogue. Still, I am just saying, if you think about this geopolitically, and if you consider the population of a world analogous to our own, even if it was smaller, killing only 80% of the world's population guarantee fucks Eldia in the future. Whether that be 100-200 years whatever from now....they are doomed and still stuck on that island, if you apply any real world logic here.
>Another thing is that Eren is an extremely unhinged maniac and always has been. He literally calls himself an idiot who got too much power. It’s very in character for him to do something so extreme to protect his friends.
I don't deny that however, he still was logical. Again if you want to go that route, killing everyone opposed to his friends make sense, and you could still write a war will go on forever ending, as the various political factions in Elida likely would not formed a stable government.
Edit: By ending I mean how the relationship between eren and mikasa was handled every thing except that was peak in the ending. I like how they showed the truth of human nature instead of a cliché ass ending where War's were no more.
1. Okay
2. Better
3. Good
4. Best
5. Great
I'll choose great.....
So it's like that for me....
In the wider sphere, I still see it frequently recommended as one of the all time greats
but shitposting in the spoiler threads for the last few chapter releases was some of the most fun I've ever had on reddit so that's nice
There's so many things it just does so well that are self-contained and not reliant on the weaker parts to work properly. The Battle for Trost was amazing, the mini-fight *after* the Shiganshina fight, the basement reveal, the talk right before the Declaration of War in S4, the entire drama in the restaurant... These are some of my favorite moments in anime in general. Still a solid, like, 9.7/10 for me.
Ending was always an ehhh low 7/10 for me. Serviceable, but not amazing and not something I'll go back and think about without prompting. No change since then, probably because I haven't thought much about it. "WHAT IS AN OKAPI?!" lives rentfree in my head though.
Still 3rd favorite, as noted above, beneath LoGH and Love is War because I'm apparently both pretentious and a basic bitch at the same time.
AOT never was close to a favorite for me, so the ending didn't affect my feelings on it overall much. It's a series that's a mixed bag to begin with, and gets more mixed with some *who the fuck thought the waterslide cave in Final Season 2 was a good idea?* type weird production choices during the parts Mappa handled. I also never felt much AOT's characters. Most of them have a very clear *means to an end* feel to them.
I dont know if it's too early to call it a classic.
But it's definitely a masterpiece
I just don't buy the paradigm shift. It all reeks of "clever" writing instead of "smart" writing, if you know what I mean.
The whole final stretch comes across more as a pretentious trainwreck than anything remotely well written.
