Also I still really can't get over that guild clerk's name being Stud......
Well, that's what happens when the MC is a corporate slave through and through and has the charisma of a wet tissue paper.
like, there is a tacit understanding between Lizel and Gil that just doesn't exist in the Bean Counter show; it feels like Lizel and Gil can finish each others' sentences, while Bean Counter is still in the "do i know you?" sort of phase
I watched this episode right after a horribly stupid episode of Jack of All Trades, which I am dropping. That made me appreciate the writing for this series so much more. I don't understand how a side character can have a monolgue where he hits the audience over the head, reiterating shit that just happened in the scene(s) right before as if him saying it out loud was something profound. Unreal.
And then there's Stud. Between his name and the way he is drawn, my imagination goes wild. I didn't catch that Stud knew about the setup. Some how I missed the setup all together but now the arrow scene makes way more sense.
And why is that, Stud? 😂
Pero, es que por el amor de dios esa quimica que hay entre los dos!!!
Considero a estos dos hombres... shippeados!!! APLAUSOS GENTE
Are those chests mimics?
*Please no*.
>Sometimes these contain monsters
Oh no 😭
>What is this?
Did you find a grimoire?
They all freeze up like they’re about to abstract 😭
Oh those are such adorable teddies. I wonder if they are always official merch.
Another ikemen!

I really enjoy the OP. Considering how stacked Wednesdays look to now be, this is a nice chill palette cleanser.
That said, I have no idea what that interaction with the viscount was about. What did the coin under the cup signal to the viscount? And what did the hand on the chest reveal to him?
I understood that the military police is suspicious of him, since a noble showing up without notice or motive is unusual. So they purposefully put up a job that only he would take while all the other adventurers are occupied with the new labyrinth but that’s about it.
It seems that our ice-cold Stud knew about the set up but didn’t know warn the MC—or maybe he knew he had no reason to worry?
Side note, the break up scene was really well written. I love how it was revealed that the B-rank was a ex-noble who has fallen out of favour for not going along with corruption with one simple hand movement.
my guess is that it's a specific social etiquette between people of rank
if Lizel was a random adventurer, i would expect him to do something uncouth like pick up the money and stuff it in his pocket, but he covered the coin with his own teacup in a more indirect and non-desperate-looking way of accepting it
The subtle political intrigue is being done well in my opinion.
But on the other hand, he knows the ancient script, and current language too, so they must have a shared history.

The camerawork seems to imply the way Gil drinks his wine is important by showing an extreme closeup of Lizel's eyes. And the way Gil seems to not want to touch the bag of money seemed important, too.
It's obvious Gil has a grudge against the nobles, he basically said so. But he also chose to accept the job as Lizel's bodyguard/tutor for a month.
It's a contradiction. But it doesn't necessarily mean Gil is a former noble. Just that he used to be more involved in "polite society". It could be that his skill earned him a high military rank (like some kind of knight) that he lost or walked away from.
My guess is that nobles are accustomed to purchasing people's loyalty and Gil walked away from a lot of money to maintain his morals, and Lizel was provoking him by doing the same thing, trying to get him to tell his story. But Gil really doesn't want to talk about it, maybe because he assumes he'll be judged for his choice. But that's really just a guess, based on the confusing dialogue.
edit: There's probably also some gay subtext here. Like maybe Gil was forced out of polite society due to being gay, and the money was implying the purchase of a sexual relationship? Not sure, but it seems like if there was some implied romantic connection, a big bag of money being thrown in would sour things.
If the MC picked up the coin it would be uncouth, but it would be rude to ignore it. Lizel knew something was wrong as soon as the cup wasnt put on the coaster. Either it was a test or the guy was only pretending to be a viscount.
It was rude to offer the money like that in the first place, so by placing the cup on the saucer he was accepting the money 'politely' while also insulting Ray by drawing attention to the fact that Ray didn't use a coaster for his cup like a civilized person would. The perfect noble insult: deniable, unspoken, and petty.
Regarding the hand on the chest, I think its possible the viscount was apraising Lizels necklace to see if it was real and if it had magical properties. An expensive gem with no magical properties is not something an F-rank adventurer would wear as everyday jewelry.
Obviously that MC is not a ... *gasp* ... FEMALE!
> I love how it was revealed that the B-rank was a ex-noble who has fallen out of favour for not going along with corruption with one simple hand movement.
Huh?
Lizel did this after figuring out that Gil is an ex noble who is disgruntled with the status quo and purposefully keeps himself B-rank, as he does not want to work with nobles. Lizel knows he will be meddling in noble affairs and doesn’t want to force Gil to do work he’s not comfortable with, which is why he hit him with the “you need to stay free” comment.
Gil doesn’t want to lose him and is offended by the implication that he was working with Lizel for the money. At least that’s what I got out of it.
They were talking about how he doesn't like nobles, and he activelly pursued tried to meet a noble, so he decided to give the money for a "Let's end this amicably, here is this so you will feel it's worth to help me in the future"
I asume the assumptions about him being an Ex-Noble comes from the fact the way he drank the wine (Or the fact he is drinking wine, to begin with, not a very "Adventurer just chilling" kind of drink)
Then we get a lingering shot on Gil drinking his wine in a refined manner while Lizel stares, implying he picked up that Gil used to be a noble.
Then we get the break up scene where Lizel tells Gil that he doesn’t want to impede on his freedom, meaning he’ll likely be taking on jobs that get him face time with nobles just like their last one.
i'm used to anime (isekai and otherwise) where everyone is saying everything on their mind out loud all the time, so i think it's kind of neat to have this under-the-radar show to trust in its audience to pay attention to the small details and make educated guesses
i haven't read the source material, but i guess the source material might've made it a bit more clearer through some pointed narration, but when adapted into an anime it's translated into little tells like a chime sound effect and a close-up shot of knowing eyes
Lizel is also using a separate adventurer party with potential to succeed on their own to investigate ancient script in the ruins without getting direct credit. So he might find out where in the timeline he's from and be able to use that knowledge to his advantage. If he's actually from the past or future, I think.
A very "alright... keep your secrets" kind of narrative so far. I wonder when big reveals or explanations will happen.
Lizel manifesting a mana gun out of nowhere was certainly a surprise, I think he was just going to use typical magic. He's quite the mischievous type to shoot himself to test/mess with Gil.
Lizel has adopted another person to give head pats lol. Even in his half-asleep state, he called Ein over to reward him for his efforts, that was sweet and Ein's reaction was amusing too.
I did enjoy the interaction between Lizel and Ray, there was more tension than was presented and it's kind of interesting to have watched it without any of their internal monologues interrupt the flow. We were watching as is.
The last scene took me by surprise, I feel like I didn't understand the full extent of why Gil was so bothered. I feel like it is because he knows that Lizel can read him and should have understood his own feelings, especially after he revealed why he wasn't an A rank. But I'm also wondering if he's offended that Lizel would treat him like any other adventurer. Lizel at their initial negotiation didn't specify the job details so I feel like I'm missing something lol.

well executed scene ;D
tl;dr this show was straight-up made for me and i love it. 🥰
I only ask because, while that seems to be the best interpretation... I could just as easily see picking up a cup/glass (any cup/glass) by the brim (where your mouth goes) could be interpreted as low brow in many contexts. I admit, it does make the most sense for Gil to be a disgruntled noble.
That last interaction is still throwing me, so I want to anchor the pieces of the puzzle that I can without spoiling the uncertainty of the entire scene.
I interpreted it as Lizel thinking that Gil was holding it in an improper way. A quick google informs me that the "proper" way to hold a wineglass is by the stem. In addition, Gil was just saying that he doesn't like dealing with nobles or fancy etiquette, so I thought focusing on that action was reinforcing that his personality is straight-forward, sometimes to a point of impropriety.
I thought the story was setting up the idea that working together would allow Gil to take on higher rank jobs, while Lizel handles the noble-related stuff for him. That way, they could both use their strengths to support each other and fulfill any further plot missions that might arise.
What did you think?
Lizel usually uses the *watashi* pronoun (polite first-person, kinda gender-neutral), and in that scene he switches to use *ore* (casual first-person, rough male, same pronoun that Gil uses)
another funny part of that though (as far i can tell by my ear) is that Lizel still uses a formal speech register (keigo/teineigo), so it feels like a weird mix of formal and informal, something like "i very much appreciate your due consideration, dude"; in comparison, Gil and the other adventurers uses a more casual register of speech (tameguchi, e.g. without desu and masu)
kind of interestingly, he switches his pronoun intermittently; he uses *ore* when parlaying with that adventurer group, but switches to *watashi* and amps up the formal speech when talking to Ray

Here's hoping they don't show too much BL content and maintain the aura of a strong plot in the making.
I do wonder if Lizel wants to be found by the king of his kingdom. He seems to be enjoying his "vacation" and doing more as he wishes than working full time. He does also seem to suspect that this is a different world and/or time period than he's from because it is weird that a country he's never heard of as an educated man would have the same spoken and written language as his.
It would also lend further evidence that this isn't his world/time that he recognized those ancient numbers in the labyrinth. That an island unfamiliar to him would use not only his language but have ancient script known to him does set off some alarms in his head.
My personal take can be wrong and I'm most likely overreading this. But the collector doesn't seems like he is there to collect. Knowing everyone tries to clear the labyrinth, they send a request that Lizel will most likely grab and do. Lizel knew it is coming from a high status due to being anonymous. So he gift wrap the item. And in case, they were looking for someone strong, Lizel also check for Escort mission. But regardless, it is definitely going to be a face to face situation.
For the meeting, Lizel always put his status below the collector, compared to helping Ein, he is less negotiating, and more accept what is in front of him, especially the part where he take in the coin by using the cup, no hand is involve the trade deal. Also comes to handshake, he didn't shake, letting the noble reassure each other to be friendly.
Speaking of his analysis, he read the note, and the number he know. He throw in a theory that he may be in the same world, just different time period. I think that will be the overarching storyline.
The only thing though is one of my phobias is awkwardness, and that scene with the dude with long blond hair sent me. The pauses are SO AWKWARD in this show
But suddenly the ML is freaking out just because the MC paid his debt and asked for his help should it be needed in the future? Normally I like it when relationship stuff is left to the unsaid (as that can be how real relationships and friendships really are) but this is one of those rare cases where I really would have appreciated some clunky exposition dialogue just to help follow along with the *"Whys?"* of the moment.
it's everincreasingly funny knowing the author say this wasn't Yaoi.
That meeting scene with Ray was truly sublime with proper etiquette in gold exchanging hands (without touching), and it does seem they are in the same world if Ray did not find anything amiss with Lizel's actions.
That final scene with Gil does hint at his attitude changing towards Lizel. He does not want it to be a mere transactional relationship anymore.
Would be interesting if Lizel is a demon-y thing who wormed his way into being a chancellor in his last world. Maybe he wasnt sent away randomly or summoned, but was banished because he couldn't be killed or stopped. He said he was sent away mid conversation, but:
"Be gone from this world forever foul demon!"
"That is quite rude, sir"
is technically a conversation.
"Gil, you're hurting me"
