Revolutionary girl utena. Do I continue watching or drop it?

I have watched 6 episodes and while I dont hate it or anything, it isn't really hitting either. I heard great things about it so, does it change considerably later or is it just not for me?

Well, there are literally thousands…probably tens of thousands of titles out there that may be for you. So, what do you think? should you waste more time on ONE show, or should you see what else is out there?

The first episodes are repetitive for a reason. When I watched it for the first time, I wasn't that interested until I hit the second disc, I think, and after that I practically binged the rest of the series.

It's a subjective medium; one man's masterpiece is another man's slop. We've got limited time on this planet, if we're going to waste it watching anime the least we can do is enjoy it lol

Well I don't think I was super invested into evangelion 6 episodes in but it's now one of my favorite animes. Psychological genre sometimes takes time to show it's true appeal, that's why I asked about Utena in particular.

For most shows I do agree with you tho.

I would say keep at it specifically bc of this reply! But it does continue to reuse its structure & animation sequences, even as they evolve. Like someone else said, it's basically a deconstruction of its genre.

utena is a slow build IMO. it lays a lot of groundwork of the genre so it can deconstruct it. and it definitely has a lot of delightful weirdness. overall it does absolutely get deeper and deeper the further you go in. the start of the show is deceptive in that way

I'd watch Yuri Kuma Arashi first if you want to try Ikuhara purely cos it's shorter but it'll give you a good idea if you like his style. Cos there is alot of repetition in his work.

If you're not enjoying an anime then stop watching it. We're not your mommy, you can make your own decisions. Last I checked, Crunchyroll doesn't send people to your house to hold you at gunpoint and force you to watch something you don't want to.

Utena does a lot of stuff that other series don’t take the time to do. It is an anime classic, and much like literary works, a lot has been built off of it. It does hold more with the older sensibilities of anime which were heavily influenced by European media, thus requiring a higher degree of patience. The elevator and escalator scenes in the original Eva are good examples of this.

All that being said, stop if you are looking for lighter fare and keep up with it if you want something to think about after you are done.

I would say keep going, just don't try to marathon it. It didn't really get interesting for me until the middle arc.

I watched it and by the end preferred the early eps over the later ones. I don't think it gets better, but the overall scenario does develop more, and the story itself has two or three stages.

Do whatever you think is best whether that's dropping it or pushing through.

6 episodes is not enough to really get into the weirdness and surrealism that's typical of Ikuhara's works, and the stuff that Utena's most known for. But it does take a while to get there so if it does start becoming a chore to watch, it's okay to just drop it.

For what it's worth when I first watched it, I didn't start getting really invested until the second arc started, it was just okay for me before that. Yet it's still one of my favorite series to this day.

I mean, id say just keep going if you're not hating it. Utena IS a bizarre show. I dug it immediately because im already a magical girl fan so this bizarre take was so interesting to me. When you start hating it drop it I guess.

I would keep watching! It's a good show, and sometimes older anime just has funky pacing IMO. Comes with the territory. But if you don't like it then you don't like it, lol
