This scene was so beautiful, dare I say it hit harder than Ai's death at the start. Genuine masterpiece!!
DragonPup2026-01-14 22:59
One of the most brutal hard cuts in anime.
SliderGamer552026-01-15 01:11
The week after this aired I was constantly thinking about that cut.
Jauretche2026-01-14 23:43
How much they use 死ね in social media really hits hard.
Hollow_Mage2026-01-15 00:05
What does that means?
1000-MAT2026-01-15 00:43
Die
Hollow_Mage2026-01-15 01:50
Ohhh, thank you!
Eek_the_Fireuser2026-01-15 07:32
Oh :(
AzorAhai1TK2026-01-14 23:46
Why would you post the awful dub lol. I know some people will yell "sub elitist", but OnK has an ***especially*** bad dub.
peenweens2026-01-15 00:40
Getting down votes, but you're 100% right
AzorAhai1TK2026-01-15 00:52
This sub would defend the breaking bad dub clip that goes around lol. At a certain point it's objectively bad.
MeatballZeitgeist2026-01-15 02:23
An interesting "baseline" that I found was the J Balvin incident.
Infamously the Solo Leveling dub included a Columbian raggaeton artist named J Balvin as one of the dungeon bosses, whose performance was near-incomprehensibly terrible. (Ironic since otherwise the SL dub is one of the best I've heard.) He was widely panned here in /r/anime, thankfully, but I remembered that the anime dubs subreddit was especially inflexible about *never* admitting a dub performance was bad, so I checked to see how *they* reacted.
To their credit, I'd say about three-quarters of the commenters there did in fact admit that it was a bad performance. So that's your baseline; among the most hardcore anime dub fans on reddit, about 25% will defend literally any dub performance no matter what. Given how intractable reddit echo chambers can be, I'd say the dub fans actually did pretty well here relatively speaking.
VinnieBaby222026-01-15 00:57
There are anime fans and then there are straight up insufferable nerds. Sorry you turned out like this.
AzorAhai1TK2026-01-15 00:59
Maybe that would make sense if it wasn't a dub *this* bad. You don't have to pretend things are good
VinnieBaby222026-01-15 01:02
Get a life
M4DM1ND2026-01-15 01:01
I'll say it, I'm a sub elitist. There is just a much higher demand for voice actors in Japan, they have schools for it, so there is much more variety.
AzorAhai1TK2026-01-15 01:03
And it's also not like we couldn't do similar with dubs if we tried. The reason a lot of dubs are bad is because they put zero time or money into actual voice direction, and recording sessions are short and VAs have to take on a bunch of roles and can't get the nuance of every role because of that. The industry is just in a bad spot, I'm sure a lot of the poor performances are from talented VAs being set up to fail.
JMEEKER862026-01-15 01:10
Not to mention that Japan still puts the voice actors in the same room for recording while English dubs are much more often done remotely these days. A lot of jobs are perfectly fine to do remotely, but this is something where a collaborative effort helps a lot.
Superior_Mirage2026-01-15 02:39
This is objectively incorrect -- remote dubbing is rare because it's much more expensive and time consuming to get the sound mixing correct compared to just casting somebody local. It's not a matter of taste like different actors; different mics and different recording environments make for objectively poor audio quality, and sound engineers cost as much or more per hour than voice actors.
Plus things like internet issues and similar problems increase the time recording takes even more, especially when you already own your own studio space. Remember -- basically everyone in anime works hourly, so time is literally money.
If anyone is brought in remotely, it's because they already have a high-quality, industry standard setup at home that won't require extra work for QC -- and then you can't tell the difference.
People can have whatever opinion they want about the quality of dubs, but companies aren't going to waste money (especially when it creates an inferior product).
0ptriX2026-01-15 02:34
I'm a sub elitist because dub scripts are pushed towards adaptation, i.e. rephrasing and prioritising natural spoken English and sync, over preserving every nuance, since the dub is more constrained by the original timing (lip flaps/performance beats).
Subtitles also condense due to reading-speed limits, but they aren't bound to mouth movements, and plus reading is usually faster than spoken delivery, so they can often stay closer to the original phrasing.
mastesargent2026-01-15 08:04
Because god forbid dubs sound natural in their iwn spoken language? What the fuck does this even mean? Are you saying that dubs should be as literal as possible in their translations, proper English be damned? If that’s the case then go watch the VSI dub of Evangelion and get back to me, because its overly literal, slavishly loyal to the Japanese script translation is widely considered to be not very good.
You’re also understating the impact of the prioritization of brevity in subtitle translations. Because subtitles need to be kept short and quickly digestible so the viewer can focus on the action translators often have to make *significant* sacrifices in nuance and accuracy for the sake of brevity. It’s not at all uncommon for dubs to have more faithful translations than the subs in places because they’re not as heavily restricted in that area. Dubs are restricted by things like lip flap which necessitates its own set of compromises but it’s not as constant an issue given that characters’ mouths aren’t always on screen as they’re talking.
Basically in terms of translation subs and dubs have their own sets of benefits and drawbacks and one is not inherently better than the other.
0ptriX2026-01-15 12:18
You're strawmanning me here.
>Because god forbid dubs sound natural in their iwn spoken language? What the fuck does this even mean?
If we can take the emotion out for one second. Where did I say dubs don't or shouldn't be natural in their spoken language? I literally said that natural language is what dubs prioritise:
>rephrasing and prioritising natural spoken English
Nowhere did I say dubs should be slavishly loyal to the script translation. I'm merely pointing out that this is what dubs are constrained by, and that to keep it natural, they may have to sacrifice nuance.
You have a fair point each having their own advantages and drawbacks - I don't disagree with your point about sub brevity. And there are some stellar dub performances out there - Death Note, Cowboy Bebop etc, but I'll say for the most part when I compare English dub vs the Japanese audio, my experience on the whole has been that the subs are *typically* more accurate. Another reason is variable voice actor quality and vocal quality.
SliderGamer552026-01-15 01:19
I'm not sure its bad (in that like most people I've only seen clips) as much as it does not have the sauce at all. Demon Slayer had a pretty underwhelming dub but I got through that dub just fine anyway (and it improved in its 2nd season), because its a basic shonen but you have to kill it for this series in particular, if you don't, why bother?
I imagine this was just supposed to be simul-dub number 4 for the season for whatever group dubbed it and OOPS its a lead contender for the most acclaimed first episode of the decade! (unlike Demon Slayer's dub where they at least got Steve Blum out of partial anime retirement for a couple of episodes)
MalcolmLinair2026-01-15 01:44
It's especially egregious when Ruby and Miyako look up the live action adaptation of "Sweet Today"; you can't tell where the 'ham acting' ends and the normal dialogue begins.
Super_Spooky_2026-01-15 02:16
I’m not a fan of the dub overall, but I think Akane does a good job here. The sub version of this scene is already on YouTube, so I uploaded this one instead, but I recommend watching the original too
fozi4ek2026-01-15 08:20
To me her voice here is too similar to how someone would speak in theatre. Like she acts being tired instead of being tired, very clear and monotonous pronunciation instead of actually tired person's voice and tempo
Rvsoldier2026-01-15 11:02
Oshi's dub is flames though
Hollow_Mage2026-01-15 00:04
😭😭😭
psgbg2026-01-15 00:16
I love how simple and effective it is. It has no waste absolute cinema.
You see her suffering, and she walking lifeless in sorrow is so brutal an poignant.
There is something that S1 and S2 had really really nailed. It had something dropping at the end, you heard the ed and it hit like a drug... you will have to wait for another week.
Also, feeling alone is not about not having people around you. When you need someone and you cant reach them, or when there is nobody (you feel) can help you. That's brutal.
opopi1232026-01-15 00:53

I am here clicking skip credits like an idiot
marcostadeusc2026-01-15 01:10
Is this anime good?
sadman43322026-01-15 01:32
It has enjoyable moments but to me it’s pretty good nothing mind blowing. The intro slaps tho.
Salute142026-01-15 05:19
I would recommend it. I enjoyed it so far. Emotional scenes and voice acting are great.
MrAHMED420692026-01-15 01:22
Interesting
Kadmos12026-01-15 02:14
While I am hoping that they bring back the Sentai cast, the CR simuldub might be able to give this anime a better dub quality wise.
Aliensinnoh2026-01-15 02:23
Ah, yes HIDIVE, I do want to skip the emotional climax of the episode. Thanks for asking!
GtheAnimefan72026-01-15 03:01
One of the best and saddest scenes ever
alcalcalcalcalca2026-01-15 03:36
Dub is so cringe

Sorry what was it removed for?
badspler2026-01-15 12:52
You have a video player "skip creddits" watermark towards the end
Super_Spooky_2026-01-15 13:50
Well yeah that “video player” is the HiDive episode, where else would you get the dub? This scene was at the very end where credits normally go. If it even counts as a watermark it certainly isn’t unofficial
