"Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night", came out in the same season as GBC.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:18
I saw that one... I might give it a try then
Unusual_Rush_11892026-01-15 04:18
Beck, K-on!, Bocchi the Rock, Rock is a Lady's Modesty...
If you like 'making the band' type anime, you can eat well for a long while
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:19
Bocchi was a lot more comedy heavy then GBC... I loved GBC for its emotional depth layered on top of the girl band theme
I haven't seen any of the others you mentioned though
Unusual_Rush_11892026-01-15 04:21
Fair, although I love the paralysing anxiety Bocchi has to deal with. For me, that gives it a lot of unique depth, but ymmv is fair.
Kakita_Kaiyo2026-01-15 04:38
K-On! is fantastic, but also pretty much the patron saint of CGDCT, so probably not what you're looking for.
Nana should hit the band + drama niche. Ya Boi Kongming is surprisingly good for how silly it's premise is. I also really liked Rock is a Lady's Modesty, but it is a bit lighter in overall tone. You could also go down the rabbit hole of idol shows.
But if you're enjoying the feeling of emptiness you might want to sit with it and watch something in a different genre. Sometimes it's best to let a meal digest before eating a similar dish again.
~~Out of curiosity, why not Bang Dream / MyGo?~~ Nevermind, saw your answer elsewhere.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:44
Oh lol I literally just came to copy paste my answer XD
Maybe I'll let it sit.... Especially since nothing really fits the hole from what I've heard some people say... Though I don't love the void empty....
I remember grasping at straws for as much Steins;gate as possible once I finished it, eventually I got to the point where I could stop reading okakuri fanfic every night XD
jpgjunkie2026-01-15 04:20
great recs
Goodmorning77352026-01-15 04:24
Any reason why not MyGo? It is the closest in themes/vibes to GBC.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:25
Yes... But I lost my mind before even getting past the first 5 minutes
The pink girl's voice is ridiculously annoying and the framerate feels lower to me.... Like significantly lower
Not to mention it feels so much brighter... I could be wrong tho
Goodmorning77352026-01-15 04:31
That's fair, stylistic choices can be rough at times. One I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is Given if you don't mind BL.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:32
BL?
Goodmorning77352026-01-15 04:33
Boy's Love, gay dudes. I'm personally not into dudes, but Given was good enough that I still really enjoyed watching it.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:36
Lolll
I don't particularly mind it.... In just not gonna be drawn in because of it.... I won't be drawn in by the opposite either lol.... If its a romance at its core then it just needs to have a good plot
I'm not like a Yuri or Yaoi lover or anything
Doesn't look hella bright like a lot of the other suggestions here so I'll look more into it
browert402026-01-15 04:31
He doesn't have as much freedom as with GBC, but all Love Live's except Nijigasaki have the same writer.
If it doesn't have to be music based, A Place Further than the Universe is unanimously acclaimed.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:38
Doesn't have to be music based if it has the vibes.... But it's kinda hard to do without music XD
Love live also looks hella bright... Idk if that's just appearance though
Bikerider422026-01-15 04:39
Just wondering, why don’t you have any interest in MyGo?
I love GBC, but I feel like MyGo has a lot more meat on its bones. (Whether or not that is a good thing is personal opinion)
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:41
• Pink Girl's voice is annoying ( I'm pretty sure she's a lead T-T )
• Frame rate is way lower and it's throwing me off since I don't watch much 3d animation
• looks brighter then GBC... Correct me if I'm wrong tho
Bikerider422026-01-15 05:08
What do you mean brighter? Visually some of it takes place during the day…
But for tone/theme wise it is a lot darker than GBC.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 05:13
It just felt brighter at first glance.... I could totally be wrong.... Like I've mentioned in this thread I could not get past the first five minutes, her (pink haired girl) voice was urking the hell out of me and the framerate felt off coming from GBC
PenPenIllust24562026-01-15 13:27
Pink girl is anon 😭 i know what you mean on her voice but please give her a chance 😭😭😭😭😭 anon 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Development_Echos2026-01-15 14:00
Maybe once the trigun dub comes back since I'm gonna have to watch that in a different frame date anyway
Disastrous_Mall_39012026-01-15 04:46
GBC was awesome, I was a big fan of nina. Although the end of the season felt pretty underwhelming.
Development_Echos2026-01-15 04:50
Fair... Honestly the last bit didn't feel like the conclusion but more like a new beginning
I would've ended it after the Emptiness and Catharsis Performance along with one more episode to close it off
And I personally ended up being more of a Momoka enjoyer... But ninas awesome too
Disastrous_Mall_39012026-01-15 04:56
Nina has a weird stubbornness that I quite admired. Momoka x Nina ftw.
There is meant to be a movie in the works, hopefully it's good.
I only recently bought the GBC making book, waiting for it to ship from jp still

Try Uma Musume Pretty Derby franchise, the season 1 is very mid but you can watch Beginning of a New Era, Road to the Top and Cinderella Gray, they are unrelated stories and they are peak
SouekiSennoSTM2026-01-15 08:14
Yeah, I haven't seen most of and don't usually seek out these girl band series - or most music-centric series in general (although I did end up watching last year's Rock is a Lady's Modesty as a seasonal).
The fact that I don't normally watch and gravitate toward these types of series, that it was full CGI animation, and that I had already started watching Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai from the same season a short while earlier which had a similar-sounding premise on the surface were all factors behind why I almost didn't watch this series.
But then I figured, why not? Give it a shot? I dislike it for any significant reason and I'll drop it in an episode or two or three or 10 or five minutes flat like anything else I trial.
Well, I'm glad I did as it ended up being one of my top favorite (#3, to be precise) series of 2024. I still revisit its scenes and music, and Nina ended up in the top echelon of protagonists from recent series.
