The Boy and the Beast

I wouldn't call it a classic or anything, but it's a brilliant movie that you probably won't see recommended as often as things like Your Name or The Girl Who Leapt Through Time or any Ghibli movie.

This movie will make you immediately call your mom after you finished watching it

Everything by Satoshi Kon, but Millennium Actress is my favorite.

For a more recent pick, Lost in Starlight was really good. It's a lot like Your Name

i know its traumatic, war based and really a tragic watch but the bonding of little girl and her brother is shown in such a pretty way i just cannot refuse but recommend it.

Other Ghibli studios film, it catches the love for music and romance between two middle school students!

Tokyo Godfathers! 

It’s just the best Christmas movie.

If I had to pick a second, Akira or Grave of the Fireflies. I never loved Akira but it’s clearly a must watch true art type of movie. And I don’t know if anyone loves Grave but it inflicts such a complex of emotions on the viewer it surely succeeds as a worthy watch. If only once and followed by something light and happy.

Edit: Actually ‘Wolf Children’. It’s less iconic than the other two but I loved it more. That feeling of growing up and losing your parents, or your children, your friends, your siblings.

I really enjoyed Overlord. I started reading the light novel because I loved the anime so much.

As someone who creates music, Look Back is a perfect representation of why creatives do what they do and how they feel while doing it. It’s probably my favorite thing ever.

Violet Evergarden the series, OVA, and the 2 movies. You can finish it all just over the weekend.

as others have said Your Name and A Silent Voice are must watch, the ones I'd recommend are 5 Centimeters per Second, Penguin Highway, The Wind Rises, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and In This Corner of the World. Have fun!

For me, this movie has been a 10/10 for at least a decade. I rewatch it here and there because it just has so many mystery to me. Not only is the soundtrack really marvelous, the post-apocalyptic world has me on the edge of my seat for wanting a lot more details and info into it. It has many flaws and some people think it's kinda stupid, but I think it has many charms that makes it my #1 recommendation for so long.

My 2nd recommendation for another movie that's probably not already mentionned is another post-apocalyptic movie (yeah, I love those). This one is a lot darker and bloody.

I love Ghibli movies, but I watch Tokyo Godfathers every Christmas.

Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Hyakuemu.

Princess Mononoke is a top 3 film of all time for me. The Tale of Princess Kaguya is also genuinely incredible.

Akira is also very good! Honourable mentions also go out to My Conquest is the Sea of Stars and Overture to a New War, which are how you start Legend of the Galactic Heroes, lol.

I have three movies that I gave 10/10 to - Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke and Tale of the Princess Kaguya.

Macross: Do You Remember Love? is my favorite. It's a retelling of the TV series with improvements all around and entirely new visuals, but I think it's best watched with the context of the series.
