New To the Isekai Genre, Starting .Hack//Sign
JUST ASKING FOR HELP
Ive seen overlord and I looked up what anime started the Isekai genre and what came up was .hack, i started .hack//Sign (what i saw posts saying is the first series) and it kinda just throws you in with no information and some flashbacks.
but im on episode 11, and still hardly anything makes sense is Tsukasa the mc or is it Mimiru? or is it Bear? or the cat Tsukasa calls mom? is the cat talking to Tsukasa him hearing his mom through his comatose state irl? is the floating girl him irl? is this even the first series, this is just so confusing for an anime, i asked chat gpt and grok they mention watching chat logs, and the discussion boards, but none of that is visible, the players close their eyes and nothing is shown when there is a message, you cant hear the cat talking, this whole anime is just a mind fuck to me.
am i watching it correctly so far, am i missing a movie before hand, or something i stick to watching anime or reading it only, and i dont care too much about any story from the games as they tend to just be side story of other characters and things.
Edit: Thanks For The Info: I will try to get the games, but only having an american ps2, japanese time data games dont work for some stupid region code bs like with the dsi and pokemon games, so to make sure i can get the events i may have to torrent them if i cant find a copy on ebay with us regional codes

Older anime in particular were also not shy about leaving you confused until more information is revealed, rather than spoon feeding you the plot.
The questions you are asking are the same questions most people asked while watching and you will get some of the answers to them as you continue to watch. Some of them, you won’t.
It is a stand alone series, you are not missing any context. It’s just a bit of a head scratcher most of the way through.
If I remember correctly, sign and roots were both meant to be watched alongside playing their games and ovas.
Edit: the newer hack series are able to be watched on their own but have so many references to sign and roots.
Like some of the other redditors said, it's meant to be fairly mysterious/build out the world (no pun intended) with minor references that'll become more understood as you play through the games-- it's definitely an interesting watch/experiment for the time it was produced (feel like we don't get too many of those nowadays)
Grew up watching this + playing the games and even I was a bit confused too ahah, but yes Tsukasa for all intents and purposes is the MC and the rest of the casts' story end up converging around Tsukasa as the lynchpin for the main plot
Love the feel and direction of the original incarnation of the series forreal, hoping we get a proper remaster of this era one day
Another great Isekai is Escaflowne.
If you like traditional jrpgs, theres a series of ps2 games that is related to the story and does a good job of adapting a lot of the concepts of the "mmo" as shown in the anime. And the cool thing is that you can transfer your character between the games so it's like one huge long jrpg
Not *now*, finish Sign first, but then you will deffinally want to at least watch a summary of the first 4 games on youtube. These are kinda the backbone of the franchise, and everything that comes before or after tie to them in some kind of way.
so, if youre looking for just good content to consume, go all in. but if youre looking for accurate representation of what an isekai is, what makes an isekai good and things like that. then it might be better to start somewhere else.
but im just having trouble piecing it together right now, like bear just cleared up a lot in ep 12, telling us that tsukasa is the comatose kid as they were hospitalized same day, and that the plug was pulled by his father but there werent any critical issues and was hooked back up cleanly which explained a lot, but some of the flashbacks are still unanswered
and the soundtrack is amazing i love the opening and outro i dont skip it despite hearing both 12 times now xD
Also don't try and get the games, they are incredibly rare and expensive. You can just watch a youtube video explaining them and the greater story. You can do this whenever during the show as I don't believe it spoils the show at all.
Also the cats name is Mana.
it is true that the games give extra info but those are harder to come by (there are short manga version out there too) but you should be abler to understand it anyway (took me years to get the manga from the games after watching sign)
