I think as far as context to it goes Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Jikenbo, which is a sequel to Fate/Zero (set around the time of F/SN or so) is worthwhile.
Apocrypha is almost like an alternative to Strange Fake, but I wouldn't consider it essential viewing though there's a comment towards it here or there so far.

Grand Order will help you to understand the relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu
KendotsX2026-01-16 07:30
No. It doesn't. [Grand Order] >!not the same Enkidu!<
LectorFrostbite2026-01-16 07:28
Answer will vary depending on who you ask but in actuality you only really "need" to watch either Fate Zero or Fate Stay Night.
Of course by consuming other Nasuverse works you'll get a better understanding on what's happening but that applies to all entries of the franchise anyway.
If you want to dig deeper I recommend the following:
Kara no Kyokai - the first entry in the nasuverse that establishes most of the lore
FGO Babylonia - might help you understand the relationship between Enkidu and Gil
El Meloi Case Files - Gives you a good understanding on the clock tower plus additional background for Flat
Tsukihime - will give you an explanation for dead apostles
KendotsX2026-01-16 07:31
Those four are more than enough. Fake has tons of references, lots of them to media that aren't even animated, but it tells a standalone story that you can watch just fine without the references.
MLBnewestFan2026-01-16 07:37
The big one will be Lord El-melloi II's case file, that one is more or less based on a world after the ubw timeline, and numerous characters from that show will appear.
Fate grand order babylon may help since it'll showcase some Uruk characters that will appear here too, but it ain't a must. Apocrypha will have even less reference I feel like.
If you want to understand the lore a bit more you'll have to play through the Tsukihime visual novel, at least the remake one, since FSF world is a weird one that is based in between a normal fate world and the tsukihime world, so there are some background lore from that side of the nasuverse too, but it would be fairly long and not everyone is into visual novels so you can skip it tbh. However if you can stand visual novels then the tsukihime story is amazing as well so I would recommend it.
Demoglitch2026-01-16 08:58
Wait is Lord El-melloi case file an anime
MLBnewestFan2026-01-16 09:03
Yea the original is a LN, there was one season of adaptation that wasn't done well tbh, animation wasn't great and they skipped over entire volumes of the novel materials, but at least it'll give people basic backgorund lore on how the fate world goes post fate stay night, storywise.
AwwZomSam2026-01-16 07:55
The ones you mentioned are enough, playing the visual novel is a good idea if you want more, it's way more detailed
Toxic-MG2026-01-16 08:20
So far nothing really, it is neither sequel nor prequel it is just a stand alone anime but watching any other part of the fate series would help you better understand the universe i really recommend fate zero... you can read about the relationship between Gilgamesh and Inkido from the internet. you don't have to watch grand order for it
Demoglitch2026-01-16 08:57
You need a digital device, preferably a computer or a phone
Anyways jokes aside I recommend finishing ubw cuz it’s peak and u basically know how holy grail war works so yeah

\- [Third](https://myanimelist.net/anime/33050/Fate_stay_night_Movie__Heavens_Feel_-_III_Spring_Song)
**Fate Zero** this is actually a prequel to Fate/Stay Night, but is meant to be watched after as it's a prequel **sequel**.
**Lord El Melloi II** Best watched after Fate Zero. You could watch Strange Fake after this. If you want even more knowledge though consider watching Fate Grand Order as well.
**Fate Grand Order** An adaptation of the Fate/Grand Order gacha game. It's not the best but it generally serves its purpose. First Order is the prologue of the game, and then skips 5 arcs to Camelot so it's gonna be a bit of a jarring jump. Just keep that in mind and you'll be fine. Not totally 1:1 but if you've played the Persona games think of FGO as palaces on a larger level.

\-- [Moonlight Lostroom](https://myanimelist.net/anime/36915) (can honestly skip this ova. it is insanely confusing if you haven't played FGO.)
Basically you will appreciate Strange/Fake more with as much knowledge you can muster.

The only thing that’s absolutely necessary is the 2023 prequel special, though watching the original “trilogy” and *Zero* won’t hurt too.
