Looking for animes that could help me learn Japanese

"How original" ik

Basically, I've decided to try learning Japanese again, and to do that, I've decided to immerse myself in the language again, but I need some advice on choosing an anime that suits my tastes and the level I'm looking for (since I will only use Japanese audio AND subtitles obviously)

I got a CrunchyRoll and ADN subscription on Amazon Prime, and basically, I want to start by watching an anime like Chi's Sweet Home (the first season) or Urara Meirochou, something that's accessible to Japanese kids but also interesting for young adults.

IMPORTANT !

I'm in France, so some recommendations could be blocked or just not available in my country

Hi Luma_furry, it seems like you might be looking for new anime to watch!

The users of this subreddit came up with [a chart of anime recommendations for newcomers and veterans](https://i.redd.it/0w1v880jtq661.png) and [an awesome longer flowchart](https://i.redd.it/vdzlkodz19c71.png). Maybe you can find something there that you'll like \^.\^

How about something like Pokemon?

Eric_T_Meraki2026-01-16 18:41

"pika pika" will sure come in handy one day for OP

Jusenkyo_52026-01-16 18:44

😂😂 Fair, but there's like 1000 episodes with all variety of dialogue.

Instead of watching the show directly without subtitles I find more interesting following the extra videos or streaming on the youtube channel, those are usually Japanese only and you should be able to follow them better since you're already watching the main series with subtitles.

Warming: They can talk really fast on those sometimes, specially streamings

Stuff aimed at children (Doraemon for example) is great, like you say. The short episodes help for attention, since it's easy to get overwhelmed if you aren't super familiar with the language. Also, other shorts like Bananya. You can get web plugins that help breakdown what they're saying for you, too! Best of luck :)

What is your current Japanese level?

Luma_furry2026-01-16 17:43

very basic, I know my hiragana and katakana, I'm learning some kanjis by combining Minecraft and Anki

AdagioExtra13322026-01-16 17:49

Where are you at in terms of vocab (not kanji) and grammar?

Luma_furry2026-01-16 17:56

practically non-existent

AdagioExtra13322026-01-16 18:00

You need to properly study that first. Grab a structured resource or textbook like Genki and work through it. You are not yet ready to use anime as a learning tool. It's a great way to practice and build upon existing knowledge which you do not have.

Luma_furry2026-01-16 18:12

oh don't worry, I'm not planning to study animes ! But immerse myself, get use to some bit of sentences, and so on

ElectricalAd70092026-01-16 18:33

You definitely won't learn japanese from anime.

Optido_Chess2026-01-16 18:42

I managed to learn Japanese from anime at least partially I learned grammar beforehand that and also hiragana and katakana and then I just connected words in Japanese to the English subtitles and today I can watch anime with no subtitles not a complex anime but Shonen I can understand about 85% of what they say and generally understand conversations (I have been learning Japanese on and off for about 3 years)

ElectricalAd70092026-01-16 18:49

It's different if someone who doesn't know Japanese at all wanting to learn Japanese from anime. He wouldn't learn anything.

Luma_furry2026-01-16 20:57

I know, it's not the goal \^\^
I'll still use other resources to learn grammar and vocabulary

ProfessionalRandom212026-01-16 23:25

imo, you cant learn Japanese with anime, like at all, at best you will learn couple regular used sentence here and there.

You just have to do it the hard way and learn from text book, if you really want it to anime related then i would say pick VN/LN and manually translate it yourself, and then write down any new word and learn it properly.

Mr_Rock-haley2026-01-17 02:57

It depends on your level
I suggest Tatami Galaxy, although they speak quickly, they use a lot of words, which I think should be useful

nlink272026-01-17 04:59

I learned a little bit from watching One Piece since its so long
