The concept of Kaguya sama love is war confuses me
No hate to the series but i don’t get the whole “if you confess you lose” thing it seems like a pretty stupid concept. Can anyone go into more details without spoilers please?

It is a stupid concept. That's the joke. These two "geniuses" are complete dumbasses when it comes to love.
Kadmos12026-01-17 02:12
I think the best part of the series is the Narrator.
No_Cockroach24672026-01-16 23:24
They're dumb kids and admitting that you're in love is embarrassing.
fizzypepper2026-01-16 23:25
Seems pretty self-explanatory? They’re both extremely prideful people who are embarassed to admit they like each other, so instead of confessing they’re both constantly trying to trap the other and force them to confess their feelings first, so as to not lose their pride and have to admit their own feelings first?
JMB_Smash2026-01-16 23:25
Just watch the first episode, its not complicated.
Also they are both just scared and embarassed, thats it.
PeaceDangerous76192026-01-16 23:26
They try to mask it as some sort of pride or dominance/better than you kinda thing but they're just kids.
n080dy1232026-01-16 23:26
It is stupid. They're both stupid. Very competent and very intelligent, but also very prideeful, idiots, and that's the core joke.
FattyHammer2026-01-16 23:26
it's quite silly but it's simply a matter of pride and appearances (social, not physical) masking the reality that they're both dumb teenagers unwilling to risk the embarrassment of rejection.
don't take it too seriously and just enjoy the romcom-ness of it all, hayasaka/chika is the real ship anyways.
noam_good_name2026-01-16 23:27
in case you didn't want to watch episode 1, the premise is just masking the real reason that they are shy high schoolers that are afraid to reveal their vulnerable side
newier2026-01-16 23:28
Why don't you watch it? It is explained to death and very basic.
YaBoiKino2026-01-16 23:29
They’re both prideful (stupid) geniuses who don’t want to “submit” to the other. The idea of confessing makes them the chaser instead of the one being chased.
Zado1912026-01-16 23:36
Its a high-school romcom my guy.... if *this* concept seems stupid, anime aint for you. There are shows about guys who die and get reborn in medieval European worlds as vending machines, generic video game characters, with cellphones that can do magic, the ability to order from Amazon, as pigs, dogs, spiders, dragon eggs, and fuck knows what else...
Two high-school kids embarrassed to admit they have a crush on their classmate simply *cant* be the bar😂😂
Buffpapyrus2026-01-17 10:50
It seemed stupid to me cause confessing to someone doesn’t make you a loser or whatever.
ScaryGent2026-01-16 23:49
Have you not watched it? Why do you want to understand a show you're not watching? Like, do you care or not? Watching the first two minutes of the first episode would be far more useful to you than interrogating redditors about it. A key component is that they're attending an elite school for the wealthiest and most privileged people and so they're raised to view relationships as very transactional and a battlefield for personal power plays, instead of acting like how real down-to-earth people act. It's pretty justified, which is more than you can say about Oshi no Ko.

Two Tsundere characters playing emotional chicken with each other…
Dolomite8082026-01-17 00:13
Tsundere x Tsundere always makes for a fun time.
ActualRound76992026-01-17 00:05
Lol what’s so difficult? they’re a bunch of awkward teenagers who care about their image. Admitting their feelings makes them vulnerable
timpkmn892026-01-17 00:38
Showing emotions means making yourself vulnerable
InstructionLittle7972026-01-17 00:41
The characters, Kaguya and Shirogane, are both geniuses and incredibly high-achievers. In their minds, being the one to confess means admitting you "need" the other person more. To them, the person who falls in love first is the "subservient" one in the relationship, and the person who receives the confession has all the power. They are both too proud to be the "loser" who bows down first.
Icapica2026-01-17 03:12
Obviously you don't lose by confessing, but those two morons (main characters) think so. Anyway, watch an episode or a few. The main characters and the narrator aren't speaking any kind of objective truth.
abandoned_idol2026-01-17 03:41
The arbitrary contest is the premise.
The motivation/goal is intended to be weird and cartoony.
You are not supposed to relate to their motivations of "defeating them by forcing a confession".
