Animation and music are good to add on top of the story. It is a short story that would be better if things were expanded on. Overall, I would rate it 7.5/10.
Not too much of a cinema experience with this one, honestly. This one is fine to wait until it is available to be streamed.
My main criticism is just that I wish they gave me more detailed info/explanation/lore about the details of their experience & plan, but I understand that's tough to do under 120 mins. I'll probably go read the light novel now though!

The action isn't particularly great either. And of course, there's the character design. Yes, the art regarding the characters (and everything else for that matter) is consistent, but that doesn't make them any less awful looking.
Don't bother going to the cinema to see this. Just rewatch Edge of Tomorrow and wait for when this ultimately drop on Netflix once they acquire Warner Bros.
It wasn't.
The robots were absolutely the worst part of this film lmao. A huge departure from the tone of the rest of the movie, and completely unnecessary because they shut up the moment the mood got serious anyway. It doesn't even make sense that Keiji could code a conversational AI in less than a day even if he knew exactly how to make it along with all the other upgrades he does.
The tonal dissonance between different parts of the movie that the robots add to is really odd. The first and last third of the movie are pretty brutal and dark in both tone and violence, whereas the middle is very lighthearted and action-y. I suppose this shift could represent Rita's changed mindset after learning she isn't alone, but in practice i just experienced it as slightly disorienting tonal whiplash. Even the violence seems massively toned down, with bodies being crushed and eaten out of view.
The last problem I have with it are the times, maybe every 4th or 5th sequence in a given action scene, where there was some cut that relied way too much on the cgi and looked uncanny or lazy af. Most of the shakey-cam POV scenes, anything with too many of the aliens moving around at once, or some of the rotating shots. The cgi was otherwise pretty well done throughout the film, and if those had been improved it would have been consistently pleasant.
Comparing this to Edge of Tomorrow is interesting, because where AYNIK is weak, EoT is strong, and vice-versa. EoT is dedicated to being a stunt-action movie and does spectacle very well, lots of high budget effects and scenes and cgi. Character writing attempts to be interesting but is ultimately pretty shallow, and the plot is as straightforward as it gets.
AYNIK on the other hand tries to do a lot more with its characters and plot and overall succeeds at creating characters with some depth and interest, but often feels like it's trying to do too many things at once and can never quite keep themselves from fumbling things here and there. Ironically I think a best of both worlds would have been the plot and overall direction of this movie getting a blockbuster budget, and the spectacle-y action focus making even better use of the medium to go all-out in the depiction of the fights.
Overall, I think I could imagine watching this one more time to give it a fresh comparison to Edge of Tomorrow, which I feel it is roughly on par with, but that's it.
It is a very strong 9.
Also interesting that people are so mixed on the art style because I feel like that's probably the best thing about this movie. The stylized CG looks great and the color work and backgrounds are excellent. I think some of the action scenes could have been directed a bit better for more impact, but it was solid overall, and that last fight was very cool visually.
Keiji is annoying as hell
The best part of this was the art style and colors. People seem to not like it, but to me that brought out the uniqueness more. I loved the range of colors and movement!
The pacing at the end felt a bit more rushed, but still enjoyed the movie overall. I wouldn’t say it was worth an R rating though?
I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite anime movie, but a solid movie that I will definitely remember for its art and animation style.
Very confused on how A led to B
I'm confused about the occupation of the characters, were they conscripted or was this their paid job? Why does Rita, who looks like a 12 year old, have a job with a power suit?
Also she's clearly older than 12
They changed a lot of things from the original story and most were for the worse imo.
Having the reset be day 1 of the invasion made it so they needed to change a lot of things story and world building wise that made it less believable. Since no one is equipped to be fighting aliens Keiji ended up being the guy that makes the weapons, upgrades the suit, and reprograms the AI so they have a robot army. Even given the time loop aspect it's hard to believe he's able to do all of this in less than 24 hours.
The other big difference was having both Keiji and Rita be in the same loop. If they were going with that direction they should've just introduced Keiji at the start and have them learn together. Introducing Keiji half way in just to have the "there's someone else in this loop" moment felt forced, AND we have to go through another training montage which not only made the pacing feel bad but also took time away from the slower moments in the story where they learn about each other. We're basically just told at the end that they grown after spending time with together rather than seeing that chemistry on screen.
I did like the idea that the alien is trying to find a strong host and uses them getting sent back in time to build up the spores, but again due to adding the new plot points and back story that whole mystery of time looping felt sidelined until the very end.
I wish that Keiji was introduced at the start so they could have a mutual training arc. It really wasted the run time with multiple arcs. He also wasted loops just watching her die on her own without helping her much. The early part is monotonous with it being just Rita on her own with no one else to bounce off of.
That was also an issue; no good characters to bounce off of each other. Rita and Keiji aren't good enough characters to carry the story on their own. I wish that there was at least a bit more of a larger cast to support the story. If they had met the science lady earlier she could've supported the duo. She was the sole non-looper who believed them and helped. Maybe add a badass non-looper who could hold their own in battle? Spice up the training arc a bit by having someone who can teach them how to fight.
It's just a shame that they opted for so much exposition in moments leading up to this, all through the 2nd and early 3rd act, because the direction was more than good enough to convey these pretty simple and striking concepts. I also had to see the Eng dub and it was very screechy at times, which couldn't have helped.
I could say more, but there's definitely missed potential here and it sucks that a couple bad writing decisions squandered such memorable visuals. The base camp (brick portions) and the tree were gorgeous, and the horror-tinged hopeless portion early on was stronger than either the manga or Cruise movie. Even the narsty char designs payed off just like I thought they would; they get uglier the further she's pulled into her depression and misanthropy, and become momentarily beautiful as she looks out over the ascending vista and Keiji finally falls in love completely.
The core elements of time loops, fighting aliens, and mental exhaustion are all there but amplified.
This is straight up a fan fiction that knew it wanted to be different from all its other predecessors and it succeeded in creating something distinct.
The artstyle took a while to get used to but it overall fit with the aesthetic of the movie. Making Rita and everyone else a harvester was such a cool idea in which we later saw the evolution of her fighting style and switching of strategies and melee weapons as the movie progressed. Having Keiji be the second main character and man in the chair was a fresh spin on his character too. I think it tackled mental health well for both of them and their attempts to get better.
The armor design was far off something practical for combat and aesthetic and I was thinking the whole time how I would never design something like that, but at the same time, I believe they wanted to create something that looked very different from what we are used to to stamp themselves as their own thing.
I legit don't remember in any other version if the alien also experience loops which was evident with the first one that dies and gives both Rita and Keiji their abilities. So it was a pretty cool implication when you see it run and fight that it was also looping with them.
The side characters were a weak point in the movie for me. Watching the movie, I did not know what to expect overall, so seeing Rita be a loner was a nice surprise, but I wasn't sure if it was going to be the right choice for the entire movie. As she began to experience more loops and seeing that she can alter events with her words and actions, I believed we would eventually see her try to get more help. But I can see how exhausting the process was going to be to convince people to help you fight when they were only harvesters and she was already some sort of loner to begin with. So her training by herself made more sense.
Then we go to the scientist character. She was introduced so late that it did two things for me, one good and one bad. I liked how it raised the stakes that they had 1-2 loops left before the assimilation would happen to one of their bodies. It kinda felt rushed in a sense that it came out of nowhere. In the Tom Cruise edition, getting a blood transfer would nullify and eliminate the loop ability and it was considered a throwaway line before it actually happened effectively raising the stakes of the last chance those characters had in defeating the main alien.
Rita and Keiji's final heartfelt talk was so good with the choice of background and words.
"I'm the one that brings tomorrow." was a baller line.
The end was a cliche done right and it was a bit on the safer side of making Keiji live but never having experienced the events of the movie.
I liked it as much as the Hollywood version. Despite some flaws, I still really like it. 9/10
