Not sure yet if the theatrical edition is compilation of season 2 or not.
New visual for Season 2 released though.
Edit: oricon news says it will take place after season 2 for the movie

ANN says sequel and Kadokawa owns ANN so I kinda trust them

Huge news if it is post season 2.

Is there any precedent for franchise movies tied to exclusive Disney licenses? I really have no idea what kind of distribution we could see outside Japan with this.
el_morris2026-01-17 15:10
That's the interesting part, Disney used to distribute Ghibli movies in cinema until 2016 when the distribution deal expired, after that gkids took in the job. I wonder what's gonna Kadokawa do to distribute it globally (this film and TEIS movie).
awesomenessofme12026-01-17 15:56
TEIS is a bit different, because there have been series licensed by Sentai that have gotten movies. But the issue there isn't lack of precedent; it's inconsistent precedent. There have been that were able to get theatrical releases and some that (at least as far as I can tell) had to wait until they streamed on Hidive.

Hence why I'm interested in it, as I said Kadokawa will push for a global cinema distribution (like Overlord) and Sentai is not capable to distributing it in USA for more than a weekend, take a look at DIMH movie which TV Asahi is recurring to another regional partners (here in México they chosed KEM Media, owners of Konnichiwa Fest which is the largest japanese content distributor in latin america), Sentai did hold a movie screening at an expo but they haven't announced it yet, they eventually will do and I bet you it will have a short amount of screenings. That's why I'm interested to see what will Kadokawa choose to do.

Getting a movie - regardless of being a re-cap or not - *before* its 2nd season even airs is definitely a huge win for the anime and the original manga. Now I am really hyped (as someone who haven't read the source material) about what happens this season!
lordposedyon2026-01-17 07:21
The mail I recieved says sequel to Season 2 but I dont know. We shall see.
Thrasher4392026-01-17 08:01
Okay so it's just a recap, which means Iruka is safe from having to be completely exposed to what this anime adaptation wou ddo to her, bless. Call me when iwaisawa is given the chance to direct an actual film of like the last arc of the manga or something instead of the disaster that is these seasons

MAL is classifying this as a sequel... I wonder if that's accurate or if its either a re-cap or "Medalist Code: White"?
In any case, looks like the producers are confident in investing on this series, which makes me happy. Would be fun to see the skating scenes with movie quality animation...
