My Friend says Frieren is “Mid”
So I watched S1 of Frieren and I really enjoyed it I thought it was deep enough that you could some really emotional storytelling from it but it’s also animated and colorful enough that you could just enjoy the universe without really reading into the undertones if you choose. I just started S2 and it really touched me man but anyway my friend swears the show is “mid and just reaching for emotions”. What’s your guy’s relationship with the show? And should I find a new friend? lol

They aren’t wrong for thinking whatever they want about the series, so long as they aren’t trying to get you to stop enjoying it.
But i have to say that if they think something that "reaches your emotions" is "mid", their opinion is irrelevant.
Also, Anime like is storytelling at its peak ,it does not need action or anything else
That’s what all art, and ultimately all of human existence is, no?
It's a beautiful story, but it lacks a lot of what some people look for in a show. They'll be completely correct saying it's mid, you'll be completely correct saying it's not and I'll be completely correct in saying it's one of the best shows that has ever been made.
Opinions are personal after all.
I’m super itching for the next episode of Sentenced to Be a Hero
They take a lot of shallower tropes of those anime (Demon King, heroes party, magic organizations, magic duels, exam arcs, etc.) and flesh them out.
In lots of anime, the heroes use super duper complex over the top spells and they sometimes spare their opponents and the heroes can be very one dimensional.
Frieren’s characters act and feel real. They have petty spats, Frieren is kinda lazy, they are broke a lot of the time, and when they have a chance to kill an enemy, they just fucking do it.
If it was the first anime you ever watched, I think you’d have to revisit to really appreciate what it brings to the table
But for me. Its still pretty good, because of its concept.
The plot isn't that interesting, characters are well written for the most part though - but the same repetitive jokes gets dry pretty quick (Frieren dismissing how long time intervals are, Fern crying perv every time or in general being upset over anything, Stark with his whiny high pitch crying etc) the dynamic between the characters are great, but there are a lot of very mundane series of events that offer little to the plot. Frieren claimed she knows little of Himmel in all the decades after their quest she never dwelled on it despite how significant their quest was & yet she recalls a defining trait of Himmel in pretty much every episode lol. I appreciate the slice of life vibe but the plot is very tame & nothing groundbreaking
I felt the pacing was inconsistent - they spent ages in some village cleaning a beach where not a lot of stuff happens & that gets way too much airtime over other places they visit where there's more interesting stuff going on. It does get better toward the end of the first season, but again there are tons of battle shonen arcs that easily exceed the First Class Mage Exam arc.
Mid is harsh for sure, but I do find it overrated given the huge hype it has garnered - imo just not as great as I thought it'd be personally 🤷🏻♂️ that being said I am interested to see whether things improve in S2
It's a nice cozy show, but it's no Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga.
Not with that ending.
It excels in many directions. I'm particularly fond of the comic relief (I'm not into the drama).
It's a great jack of all trades anime, and very funny.
It's also true that the 4-episode prologue is brutally slow. The show becomes more conventional and easy to watch starting from episode 5.
It's a pretentious, but rather shallow mix of poor attempts at appearing poignant and profound, average slice of life, and generic battle shounen (especially the last arc), with mostly uninteresting characters (some side characters are ok, but the main are pretty much just 2 dandere "waifus" that poorly pretend to have depth), in your usual run-of-the-mill RPG-like fantasy world. It also feels like it works in a similar way to generic modern isekai, how it has 1 main gimmick, in this case "... but the main quest is over, hero is already dead and I live longer", it did some stuff with it, but started to run out of ideas, so it entered the common route of "just throw some cool battles" with the template exam arc.
While not terrible by any means, and it's pretty solid for what it is, it's not even close to being a 10/10 masterpiece.
That is my take. If it's your favorite, it inspired you, changed your life etc., good for you, have fun watching the 2nd season. Different things work for different people. For me it didn't.
There's nothing particularly interesting I found about the show beyond the early part. The characters are fine. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing that draws me to them.
So characters I don't care much about are doing things that I don't find that interesting and they are telling me the same thing twice using two timelines.
It's most definitely a very well made show. But production value has never been something I care that much about. It has great emotional storytelling. That's the early part I said are the best. That part was great. It should have ended after that instead of going on an adventure with the young guys. It didn't. I watched more. And I decided to drop it.
Same concept of a being that outlives nearly everyone it encounters, but very different execution. And for the first season at least, I liked it a hell of a lot better.
This show ain't cozy though. This show gonna make you ugly cry.

Honestly, I get the slow paced progression of the story; but that isn't even my major complaint with the show. If you take off those rose tinted glasses and focus on what is really going on, then yeah it can be seen as pretty mid. Some of the explanations for the world building in the anime derive from cliched JRPG elements which can get super repetitive as you gloss over nitpicky details. The dynamic between the trio becomes super old by the time you reach the halfway mark and the plot doesn't really go anywhere.
TLDR; it's an ok show with mildly interesting characters, but I just couldn't be arsed to finish it all the way through.
Frieren is a show that actually requires you to have an attention span, and quite frankly most people don’t have that anymore.
It’s a show with a calm pace that takes it’s time getting to the really fun stuff. I’ve started to watch it with a few people but they fell off almost instantly. They couldn’t get through the first five minutes without pulling out their phones and scrolling through instagram.
That’s the age we live in now unfortunately.
There’s also the possibility that your friend genuinely just doesn’t think the show is that good, even after finishing it. In that case, it’s just his/her opinion which everyone is entitled to. Your friend doesn’t have to enjoy it for you to enjoy it. You shouldn’t let that bother you. There are plenty of things that you’re going to enjoy that other people around you don’t.
But if you can, it is nice to find other people who are into the same stuff as you. More to talk about. I love nerding out with like-minded people.
