But really... oh god. 10 years? It can't have been that long. TEN YEARS?! Shit. Fuck. Oh no.

> I was there... in the trenches...
Were you also there for the horrors of the reaction to "I love Emilia?"
kingwhocares2026-01-17 17:36
They should've kept that last scene of Season 1 that they introduced in the extended version.
baseballlover7232026-01-17 22:30
What's crazy, is that they straight up still had evidence of Rem's erasure earlier in the season, as Rem was the one who physically penned the letter, which became blank, and thus formed the post whale part of Arc 3.
But the real reason they didn't include the Who is Rem scene originally is that they weren't expecting Re:Zero to be a hit and thus in Arc 3 they cut a lot of forward looking foreshadowing and references since there were no plans to make a Season 2 (which is one reason why it took 4 years for Season 2 to happen).
I should also note, none of Re:Zero's seasons have adapted the last chunks of their light novels.
AussieITE2026-01-18 09:12
What do you mean the "last chunks of their light novels"?
I know there has been a bunch of lore that has been kind of skipped, but included in those little short videos published to Youtube.
baseballlover7232026-01-18 09:27
> What do you mean the "last chunks of their light novels"?
I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The Re:Zero anime has generally stopped short of the light novel volume it was adapted from. For example, the entirety S02E01 was part of Arc 3 and was the last chapter of Volume 9.
Season 2 didn't adapt the addendum for some reason (and skipped it in Season 3) which despite being only 2 pages, is really important at some point. And Season 3 didn't adapt the last chapter again.

guynumbers2026-01-17 13:58
Watched it the day it first aired without reading the synopsis. Idk how many people nowadays are able to do that with how popular it is.
Tanyan-nightchord2026-01-17 14:28
I didn't watch when it aired, but I did watch it without knowing anything back in 2016 when it was still new. It was also my first "anime" anime that I picked up on a whim after seeing a random picture of Rem and decide that "Yes, today I shall become an anime fan" and almost 9 years later I can say that I did not lie that day.

UMP45isnotflat2026-01-17 22:47
Going in not knowing its overlength either
Stylistic_Device2026-01-18 11:04
I still got to!
I always thought it was part of the Fate series (yes, I know lol) until this subreddit told me it wasn't.
I was nowhere near prepared other than knowing a tiny bit about Rem (but not even that she was part of this series) so I got the full 'impact' of ep 1 haha.
Fair to say I love the series now, though I still like the first season best
BeckQuillion892026-01-17 15:13
True. The one things that's interesting to me is that the series doesn't really have a main plot or main goal (at least for the protagonist). Almost always reactive.
Sure there's the election and the mystery of Satella, but it feels more like worldbuilding than Subaru's driving force. Every arcs plot is mainly to survive or deal with the damage caused by last arc's plot. No arcs events feels truly propelled by the actions of Subaru outside of damage control.
isrlygood12026-01-17 18:13
Indeed, Subaru ideally would just like to chill with his new friends till he dies of old age, winner of royal selection or not, but life just keeps throwing him the toughest battles.
Iggyhopper2026-01-17 21:56
You can only hear "my brain trembles" once. I yearn to watch it that first time again. It was awesome.
RPO7772026-01-17 22:41
Yeah this was my first reaction. I was already past 30 when it first aired too lol.
UnderstandableXO2026-01-17 12:35
forever grateful that the wait between season 3 and 4 isn’t nearly as agonizing as the wait between seasons 1 and 2 and 2 and 3
BigriskLowrolls2026-01-17 14:29
It's a bit of a double edged sword. Season 4 wasn't supposed to exist. Everything was going to be bundled up into season 3, but production issues caused season 3 to be split up.
That's why season 3 is only 16 episodes long, compared to the previous two seasons.
So really, in the end we had to wait longer. Not a big deal, since judging from the quality of this PV, its gonna be something special.
272b2026-01-18 01:15
It's for the best. We can't have Re:Zero arc 6 anime adaptation looking like One Punch Man season 3.
Para_Boo2026-01-18 11:01
"Bundled up"
As someone has only watched up to the end of Season 2 and has not read the web nobel but seeks to remember that it's not yet finished, what does "bundled up" entail here? Did they want to competely finish the story at the end of S3 or was it just that they wanted to have caught up with the web novel by the end of S3?
BigriskLowrolls2026-01-18 11:13
Everything in season 4 was going to be in season 3. What they wanted originally was to have Arc 5 and 6 be one season (season 3) but production issues forced them to split it up, and now arc 6 will be season 4.
They would need more than 4 seasons to be caught up to the web novel, which is just about to enter arc 10.
thekoreansun2026-01-17 12:40
I think it goes unappreciated just how large of a cast Re:ZERO has juggled over its first three seasons. 30+ characters are in this visual, and pretty much all of them have had at least one moment to shine across Subaru's numerous loops throughout the series. Even when you set everything else about Re:ZERO aside, the fact that one of its core messages is that everyone has a story that matters—and that it continues to develop them in unexpected and interesting ways—is something I will always admire about it.
erickiceboyxxp2026-01-17 14:22
That’s why it might be my favorite isekai ever. If you read the lns, literally everyone is important but as you said, others shine in the show. I think this author handles op characters the best out of any other story I’ve seen or read.
thekoreansun2026-01-17 14:42
Honestly, even just the concept of having named chapters/episodes for your characters is a stroke of narrative genius: the implicit guarantee that every single character will make their mark on the overarching plot, and the sudden impact of seeing a named chapter and knowing that this is *their* moment, is something that no other story has ever replicated for me. In a genre that's oversaturated with one-note side characters that have almost no agency, Re:ZERO feels *alive* in a way that few other isekai have been able to achieve.
erickiceboyxxp2026-01-17 16:43
Couldn’t agree more, the named chapters are amazing and gives every character an edge. Rezero is one of the rare stories where it doesn’t constantly require the mc to be present because he’s not the only one with charisma.
ClemFire2026-01-17 14:30
Well said. Out of shows with large casts how ReZero handles them is at the top for me right next to Hakiyuu
Fryng2026-01-17 14:55
Re:Zero is masterful at Character Development for real, shining lights on different characters and giving them all their moments to shine or their own actual plotline, most stories don't do an iota of that
rider_shadow2026-01-17 22:55
Yeah, it's mainly cause Subaru isn't the overpowered shounen MC that would become too strong and overshadow others. He's very weak and that's why he forms relationships that last.
BeckQuillion892026-01-17 15:08
The characters I love the most are the witches and the Sin Archbishops.
I've seen crazy and insane characters in anime before. But in re-zero, they feel less like over the top looney villains (ex. the "horny" for killing type characters) and more like natural disasters.
At least in terms of the archbishops, they don't feel like beings that can be reasoned with, talked to, or even really understood. Their very realm of logic is so beyond reason that when you encounter them its literally impossible to make a choice that doesn't result in death or torture.
rider_shadow2026-01-17 22:57
Yeah I love the cult as an antagonist faction so much, they feel so much more of a threat and have their own ideals that the shounen villain bands
BosuW2026-01-18 05:46
The way Tappei writes insanity is so unique and impactful. Like shit is actually overwhelming. How can someone yap so much about a single thing? The answer is to imagine how much time and energy they spend thinking about that thing, and that is mind boggling.

whut-whut2026-01-17 16:42
The author said that he'll be done in Arc 12. Books are on 9, Anime is on 5.
zackphoenix1232026-01-17 18:56
Considering each arc averages around 5 volumes now, and a volume comes out once every 3 months (and also apparently the final arc is double length), we still got a good 20 books to go. Longer than the entirety of Konosuba (17) and Overlord (18), and 2 volumes shorter than Shield Hero (22).
At this rate, Re:Zero's shaping up to be double the length of Mushoku Tensei (ended at Volume 26).... or is it already-?
Edit: I just did the math, Re:Zero has 43 main volumes, 6 extra volumes, and 10 side story volumes (not counting the web novel only side stories), with a total of 59 volumes-- what the fuck. Also like 3 or 4 bonus volumes, what the fuck.

Is the plot still problem > die > fix problem > problem fixed but there's still issues > die > fix problem entirely? I got to season 2 and found it a bit repetitive, just wondering if it gets better
sexy_snake_229xXx2026-01-17 13:39
If that’s the problem, then yes, this one problem is fixed, in fact season 3 ends with quite lot of problems still unresolved, and they do something interesting with the looping this season, but I can’t really say for spoiler sake.
just stick until after watching episode 7, the season starts off a bit similar to the others, if you don’t like it after ep 7 you can drop it then.
AussieITE2026-01-17 13:39
It gets better. You said you *got* to S2, but I'm unsure how much of it you watched.
One of Season 2's primary narrative points is about how Subaru relying on his death-redo is actually terrible, despite how much of a cheat it may seem.
Season 3 is basically the fruit's of S2's labour. It is quite satisfying.
I am looking forward to S4

Yes, it is.

Also, I feel like if I didn't know anything about R:Z, I'd look at this and be under the mistaken impression it was a battle harem lol

I loved the "closure" Season 1 would have given had they decided to not continue animating the series, but at the same time I was disappointed because the world they set up was so intriguing. 10 years later and we're moving into what's said to be the best arc yet...I feel very fortunate that we're still getting Re:Zero a decade later. Here's to another decade 🙏
el_morris2026-01-17 14:54
10 years already? Man, time flies... Ah yeah, I gotta make a rewatch for this one asap.
Different_Ad_90222026-01-17 15:04
Is Re:Zero really good ? I've heard a lot of people say it's overrated
crxsso_dssreer2026-01-17 16:16
isekai were less common 10+ years ago, now there are tons of them so it can definitely feel overrated. The MC can be annoying as hell...
Also this is the kind of story that didn't need to go on for ever (I'm talking about the light novels).
Different_Ad_90222026-01-17 16:36
Ooh gotcha,so it's kinda just nostalgia that some people like it?
Waylornic2026-01-17 18:25
You know how in every isekai, you know the fight is cooked when the MC shows up because he's so over powered nothing could ever beat him? Re: Zero is one of the only isekai where that's not the case. He has an ability that is overpowered, but it is not a power you use in a fight.
Then, other than that, it's the kind of story that's written like an actual novel, in that there are themes that the author is writing to. Progress happens in the world, but most of the progress with the character is internal. He starts the show with a mindset, and throughout the series, little by little, he starts to change that mindset.
When people say the "MC is annoying" that's usually what they're referring to. He's not a perfect person, but instead he's working to fix his mindset.
So, if you're used to isekai heroes who are all powerful and always right, and everyone loves them all the time, this is not that. Which, hey, some people come to isekai to see folks who are always strong and always right, and this show is not for them.
abandoned_idol2026-01-17 16:50
It's fun.
It is edgy, musical, rule of cool teenage fun. I'm 30 and I like it.
It has flaws too. e.g. Little girls able to jump up 3 stories in one leap. The red haired omnipotent Gary Stu, etc.
I'd recommend watching the first 7 episodes to form your impression of it. Episode 7 is supposed to be that "cool" moment.
The "dead ends" have an ironic comedy to them. They might be intended to be dramatic, but I just cry laughing every single time which I find to be equally as enjoyable.
If you're skeptical, maybe try listening to the Myth&Roid band, their music is basically hard coupled to the franchise and is fun to listen to.
Heck, I was even rooting for the protagonist at points.
"Overrated" is pretty vague of an assessment. But then again, people don't care to describe things they don't enjoy, so I can understand. I have anime I don't care to describe either.
fenixspider12026-01-17 16:50
It is extremely good, and don't listen to the guy saying MC is annoying as hell. Judge for yourself and give him a fair shot. I bet you will be surprised.
enesup2026-01-17 17:33
The first season was an instant classic and is now old enough to be one.
DirtyTacoKid2026-01-17 18:15
The first season is really good.
I fell off HARD in season 2 though. I think thats a super common occurrence too. It became way less compelling when they're stuck in a place.
I still recommend watching the first season though. Maybe the books are better.
zackphoenix1232026-01-17 18:49
Generally in the RZ novel community, Arc 4 (what was adapted into Season 2) is considered to be much better and stronger than Arcs 1 to 3 (what was adapted in Season 1).
It's so highly rated that the only thing so far novel readers rate on equal footing to it (if not higher) is S4 content (Arc 6).
adamsworstnightmare2026-01-17 20:49

I still love the show, but part of me wishes Felt weren't relegated to side-character status so quickly.

Season 3 is basically the fruit's of S2's labour. It is quite satisfying.
I am looking forward to S4
The overall structure probably isn't the issue, I think, it's all in how you get there. Maybe these characters or writing style just don't click for you?
I'm enjoying it, but you are spot on.
I like the edgy dead ends. My favorite one so far is probably still when he got eaten by rabbits. Reminded me of the beast from Monty Python.
Here's hoping for many & more years of peak:0 🎉
Also, I feel like if I didn't know anything about R:Z, I'd look at this and be under the mistaken impression it was a battle harem lol
Did I miss any?
Also this is the kind of story that didn't need to go on for ever (I'm talking about the light novels).
I fell off HARD in season 2 though. I think thats a super common occurrence too. It became way less compelling when they're stuck in a place.
I still recommend watching the first season though. Maybe the books are better.
It's so highly rated that the only thing so far novel readers rate on equal footing to it (if not higher) is S4 content (Arc 6).
Is it like some secondary extra? Why haven't we seen her in the series?
