My dad isn't the biggest anime watcher, but I convinced him to watch One Punch Man and he loved it. It's a shame for the animation to fall off the way it did, but I'm sure your dad will enjoy it.
aledelip2026-01-17 13:13
Maybe I'll try opm
Weirdosreddit2026-01-17 13:09
What is he usually into?
aledelip2026-01-17 13:11
Usually he watches police and crime stuff, also he likes action
kirukolover2026-01-17 13:23
Try Pluto pretty good crime/police
AnotherFellowMan2026-01-17 13:45
Psycho Pass is probably the best recommendation for an intro anime for those that like crime stuff.
One of those that has a great first episode to get you in straight away.
Weirdosreddit2026-01-17 13:57
The exact one that came to my mind
Weirdosreddit2026-01-17 14:00
Psycho Pass is a great pick.
Terror in Resonance? I'm not a big fan but pretty cool.
Death note, like...why not?
91 Days. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.
Even AOT seems like an amazing pick. Survey Corps and stuff.
ElectricalAd70092026-01-17 15:05
DEATH NOTE
F3arless_Bubble2026-01-17 15:06
Attack on Titan should be a top one. Its action like loads of it, mystery so similar to crime genre, and isn’t overtly anime like so he won’t be icked out. Most standard manly dads will not watch something even with similar design to popular anime shows but something like AoT is more gritty and not as fluffy and playful that puts off a lot of men who have grown up not into anime.
Vinland saga and what not. You should be looking for this type of aesthetic where it’s not cute bouncy girls all over
maullidothethird2026-01-17 15:41
Not I netflix but onihei, "police" of samurai era.
The great pretender if he is into heist and gang stuff
Megalobox if he like boxing, think this was on netflix, there are a lot of references and not lewd fanservice in this one but hard of notice
I would suggest lupin the third but there are a lot of fanservice. Yeap, vehicles and weapons are based in real model and is fanservice too but there is fujiko. Castle of csglisotro is safe movie but is miyazaki stuff.
If he used to play arcade, high score girl, despite of bad models and shader is a really good one. Bb
Catnapie2026-01-17 13:11
Dungeon Meshi, pretty safe and non-cringe anime.
aledelip2026-01-17 13:12
Oh god
Phnglui2026-01-17 13:38
What's with the oh god...?
aledelip2026-01-17 13:39
I hardly think he'll like it, it's too umh idk onestly
Phnglui2026-01-17 14:56
Use your words.
I genuinely can't understand what the hangup is unless you're mistaking it for danmachi.
F3arless_Bubble2026-01-17 15:05
Dad is not really into anime. Giving vibes of standard macho dad type. So no, anything super “anime” like is not going to work. Needs something prob more hardcore and tough tbh. At least that’s the vibe I’m getting from OP despite vagueness p
Phnglui2026-01-17 17:23
But Dungeon Meshi isn't very \~\*anime\*\~. It's fine if the issue is that the father doesn't like fantasy, but like. How are we supposed to give recommendations if the responses we get are "um, errrrrrrrrrr gosh."
Thraggrotusk2026-01-17 21:31
Dungeon Meshi is *super* "anime" though? Specifically, the comedy.
I'm not sure why you think it's somehow an exception.
aledelip2026-01-17 21:34
I js think that it IS too much "anime "for him
Thraggrotusk2026-01-17 19:22
The comedy + reactions can be "cringey" to a lot of people though...
Ill-Annual-37442026-01-17 13:11
Netflix? Cyberpunk y monster
aledelip2026-01-17 13:12
I dont think he'll like monster but I can try cp
PikminPlayer52026-01-17 13:13
Marboshi
FoodieMonster0072026-01-17 13:16
What kind of shows does he like in general? My dad's fav western live action/animated shows are The Mandalorian, The Witcher, The Wheel of Time, The Legend of Vox Machina, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Rurouni Kenshin (live action movies). The anime he likes are Vinland Saga, Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Samurai Champloo, Kingdom, Blade of the Immortal. You can see a trend here.
My mom on the other hand prefers March Comes In Like a Lion, Jellyfish Princess, Frieren.
aledelip2026-01-17 13:17
He watches police and crime stuff, also he likes action movies
aledelip2026-01-17 13:18
I actually haven't tried cowboy bebop yet, what is it abt?
FoodieMonster0072026-01-17 14:06
Space bounty hunters going after a crime syndicate. I think your dad will like it.
If your dad likes crime and mystery stuff, he might also like: Monster, Terror in Resonance, Psycho Pass, Ghost in the Shell.
Ryota28142026-01-17 13:16
What about cowboy bebop, it has a great story and cool action.
Sw4gtastic4202026-01-17 13:44
Cowboy bebop is what I used to introduce my dad to anime, its a great show that you can watch on and off and one of the best dubs, which is easier for older watchers than trying to get them to watch subbed right away.
AlexHallon2026-01-17 13:17
Mine liked Blue Eye Samurai, and I'd also recommend Vinland Saga
Affectionate-Can-2312026-01-17 13:19
Vinland saga it’s grounded no fantasy or powers with a good story.
SmileW_192026-01-17 13:22
Maybe some slice of life stuff, like Blue Giant or Hyakuemu
Doomed-here49092026-01-17 13:27
You said your dad likes police and crime stuff. I'd definitely recommend Monster by Naoki Urasawa. Amazing show.
dwarvish12026-01-17 13:28
Arcane. It's a story about found families and how complex relationships between those we call siblings can be.
aledelip2026-01-17 13:29
He actually watched that a lot of time ago, he liked it
dwarvish12026-01-17 13:44
Nice. I recommend it a lot.
SparrowTits2026-01-17 13:34
Frieren, Blue eye samurai
Skaven132026-01-17 13:35
Lord of Mysteries
Crime and Mysteries in a Victorian Fantasy World.
Awesome Animation and no strange Anime behaviour.
Good_Weekend90812026-01-17 13:39
Watch Baki Hanma
gordybombay2026-01-17 13:46
Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. Absolutely incredible show, no cringe. Historical fiction that is somehow also very tense and compelling. Give it a shot
Vast-Coffee-70582026-01-17 13:56
GATE: Thus the JSDF Fought There
Lupin the 3rd Part 5
Wild-Concentrate-3932026-01-17 14:02
baki hanma
Evilbefalls2026-01-17 14:30

Standard-Scallion9722026-01-17 14:30
Dad here, loved Castlevania on Netflix. It's action horror not sure technically anime, blood and gore, ending is fantastic.
Prof_V2026-01-17 14:38
Monster, Paranoia Agent, Black Lagoon, Megalo Box, Pluto, Ghost in the Shell, Paycho Pass
If he's open to more Fantasy: Attack on Titan, Hellsing Ultimate, Akame ga Kill!, Baccano
ElectricalAd70092026-01-17 15:06
DEATH NOTE
ridik_ulass2026-01-17 15:39
How old is your dad, I watch anime with my daughter.
If its his first time akira is top tier and inspires a lot of western movies like the matrix. It's a movie so 1 evening commitment.
Beyond that tell me what shows does your dad like? If he likes star trek ds9 and babylonia 5, legend of galactic hero's is what to watch.
If he likes boxing or ufc, hajime no ippo is peak
Base ball, one outs (there are others i have not watched)
Racing , original initial D
Netflix castlevania is a good family watch
Likes blade runner , cyberpunk edgerunners, ghost in the shell
Likes guns are guns? Jourmangand, blacklagoon is darker but similar if you want more.
Terminator zero was good
Likes lord of the rings frerein
Id be happy to a) answer more if you tell me about him ,b) talk to him directly or c) be someone you can message in a few months looking for more.
You said police and crime, death note could be good there, there are better stuff for that but can't think off the top of my head
c_cragg2026-01-17 16:41
I'd recommend Great Pretender. It's missing most of the cringy stuff you find in other anime and has adult characters.
It's a series about crime and scamming with the first 5 episodes containing the first case.
