Why do people hype up hunter X Hunter as much as they do?
I finished watching hunter x hunter with my girlfriend and I’m just confused what made people feel that’s it’s the greatest of all time for some. The ending felt very rushed between Gon and Kilua you don’t even get to see the apology or him introduce Alluka. The chimera ant arc focuses on so many characters you don’t care about and honestly Gon is sidelined for so long I start losing a connection there. Muerem is the best character introduced then, but even then all the fights that are hyped up don’t even follow through. Up until Greed Island the show was amazing and felt very different then everything chimera ant on. The depth of characters doesn’t feel on the same level of one piece or Naruto so why is it praised like that? I don’t wanna hear nen battle system bc I agree it’s very in depth and I like it but that doesn’t make the characters deeper. (My Girlfriend feels even stronger about this bc she is very character oriented)

There is no scientific measure of popularity where because something meets these parameters, they’re objectively popular and that’s a scientific fact.
Taylor Swift is probably the most popular pop star in the world right now, among many age groups, not just young people. I do not and have never liked her. My opinion isn’t objectively wrong, just like the opinions of her fans aren’t objectively right.
Is like…any of this sinking in? Because I’m taking precious time out of my day to explain it.
I think what you really should do is ask individuals why they like it. Then respect it. Maybe certain things feel rushed to you. If I disagree, it isn’t my place to tell you how wrong you are. Make sense?
There is nothing else in the shonen genre as immaculate as the final arc major fight (in the anime).
The show is more dark than the shonen you listed. People just get destroyed in hxh, it holds nothing back. That gritty realism is why it's so good.
It's the same reason why an anime like Frieren, which has many virtues but also many flaws, skyrocketed in polls and got the first spot on MAL, and is often called the best fantasy anime, despite being a story that has yet to be told completely.
Besides what everyone else said, if you don't get why it's so praised then you probably were barely paying attention.
You sound like someone who should just watch pure battle shonen.
Character development? Come on now, some of the best out there.
For the record it's somewhere in my top 10 so it's not like it's my favorite of all time.
Also like lol Gon having his crashout when you think about his age and his life ...i mean.
Without getting into the rest of your arguments, you are comparing to shonen that have many more episodes to allocate towards character development.
Maybe the first half, but Shippuden was a mess. Particularly the end of Shippuden (and I'm talking about the second to last boss, not the last boss).
Also, the Nen battle system can't even hold a candle to the "World Trigger" Trion ruleset. Sure, "Nen" is the #2 best system, but second place doesn't mean much.
I personally enjoyed HxH for what it had to offer. Beginning episodes were pretty dull.
One Piece is great. The only criticism I have for One Piece is how **gutted** the first anime adaption is. Like studio Toei was hired as a butcher, not an animation studio.
Mr. defeats everyone at the same time.
When one character makes the feat of defeating the entire world, that just makes the world itself feel lame rather than make the one character feel cool.
Fights mean nothing the moment Madara showed up on screen.
as per MAL, everyone knows frieren s2 is now the greatest anime of all time. get with the times!
I love the series because it felt like it broke the traditional mold I have long grown bored with in this genre personally. I like other storylines happening gon has barely anything to do with because the show feels more well rounded to me with fleshed out characters. ngl, Naruto definitely isn't a series most people would call deep in comparison to HxH nor does it have fully developed characters outside of the core group, so i don't entirely understand the complaint other shonen have characters with better development because I have yet to find another and I have watched all the other ones at one point.
Either of Chimera Ant Arc final fights vastly exceed any realistic expectations and I have troubles taking someone serious who doesn’t elaborate on why they don’t. The whole show constantly builds upon Gon’s naivety and willingness to sacrifice himself (even at unnecessary times) that culminating all of that into his fight is beautiful story telling. You’re not supposed to feel hype from it, that’s meant to be an “oh fuck no” moment. If you just want brainless fights that’s why you don’t get it.
Muerem fight is legit incredible. The context around it after watching him grow to be better only to face the horrors of humanity is superb writing. He’s a fantastic antagonist because he starts as comically evil with insane power. But he spends time with someone he perceives to be extremely weak and vulnerable, but his world views are challenged when all of his notions of her lack of worth fight with the growing respect and admiration for this weak being.
HxH takes the standard Shounen formula and looks at it from a more cynical point of view. A show like Naruto fails in its messaging of “Work hard for success” when all strength and victories are gained though inherited powers, plot contrivances, sheer luck, or happening to face appropriately strong enemies at just the right Tim every time. Whereas HxH looks more into what the journey would actually be like and how brutal it could get for a dumb kid to run around a world filled with powerful people.
You can dislike the direction the story goes, or not be a fan of subverting typical shounen arcs for sure. But I strongly feel you may struggle with media literacy if you genuinely think a show like Naruto has more character depth than HxH.
That said, I think that compared to other shounen series the story is executed well, where it got straight to the point from the first episode and managed to consistently keep track and not lose focus midway. The world building was great - for I loved seeing the different places and journey the characters took. Maybe it's because I've seen other long anime series such as Katekyo Hitman Reborn and Eyeshield 21 where there were some over the top cringe moments that made me lose my interest in the story midway or made me think "why did the author even put those cringe moments in there?"... but there were no over the top episodes in Hunter x Hunter. I haven't read the manga, so not sure if Hunter x Hunter included filler arcs, but if there was it made me feel that all arcs were part of the core story in the anime.
The only arc I personally didn't like was the Chimera Arc, due to how drawn out the arc was and how dark the story got at times. I'm the sort of person who believes that a good story must have a right amount of balance, hence you don't see me getting into shows that have heavy horror elements. But hype aside, I can sorta understand why, for Hunter x Hunter overall was a solid show
I personally rated Hunter-X-Hunter high mainly because it is interesting. The exams are interesting. The battle tower is interesting. Greed Island is interesting. It has so many unique ideas that all end up being interesting. Hunter-X-Hunter also has much better pacing, especially compared to One Piece. It's simply more fun to watch than One Piece and Naruto. Character development isn't the only thing that's important.
