What's Wrong With The Harem Genre, Why ls It Considered So Negative?
I love Harem anime, I have watched Highschool Dxd, To Love Ru, Date A Live, Infinite Stratos, The Quintessential Quintuplets, Trinity Seven, Testament Of Sister New Devil, Rosario + Vampire, Campione and Omamori Himari multiple times. I have watched all episodes, movies, specials, I have even read the manga, light novel, doujinshi and fanfictions. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience with Harem anime a lot, yet I have seen many people criticized the genre and I don't know why. Is it wrong to like Harem anime?
Is it because the male protagonists are perverted/dense/cowardly? If so then I don't feel like that's fair criticism because these character traits helped the protagonists stand out and often serve a narrative or thematic purpose. Their flaws make them relatable or create comedic and dramatic tension that drives the story forward.
Or is it because of the lack of charm of recently Harem animes? I'll admit most Harem animes after 2020, like Arifureta, have been pretty lackluster in comparison to the classics I hold dear. But I feel like that’s more a criticism of execution, not the genre itself. And I feel like there are a few hidden gems from times to time, like 100 girlfriends.
Overall while Harem anime does have its flaws and tropes, that can feel overused or poorly executed, I still deeply enjoyed watching and reading them and will continue to do so. So is it wrong to like harem anime?

you do know why. i mean you literally explained the reason why in your own post

narrative or thematic purpose? nah the only reason author make the MC dense is so that they can stretch the manga chapters to 69 bajillion chapters
and after all that, they deliver the most trash ending i.e. open ending or best girl losing etc
If the MC is good, reviews also tend to be good e.g. 100 GFs, TWGOK, Quintessential Quintuplets, etc.
Surprise surprise if the main character is not a doormat people actually like it.
but also a lot of people just aren’t a fan of infidelity and this is adjacent so.
The harem series are rarely actually harem series and more like "what girl among this large number will win?" and it's usually the boring answer of it being the main girl.
Most of the protagonists are pretty bad. There are better ones though which range from decent to good, but this feeds into the next issue
What I'd like to call "lowest denominator writing". What is currently being used for isekai and a few other sub-genres (banished from the hero's party might be a new low), was used for many harem series, especially magic school harems. It's basically when a series relies on its genre tropes more than anything and it's clear the creator was phoning it in from the get go. This invades everything from character writing, to plot to developments and so on. Another good example of this is the mecha genre. Yes robots are cool, but what else do you have? If the answer is nothing and on top of that it doesn't even have cool robot fights, what is left? Nothing and that's the same issue in several harem series.
You mention comedy but a lot of series struggle to actually be funny and cap out at merely amusing if they're better than average.
The romantic elements typically could be improved too.
There are certainly good harem series as well as ones I enjoy regardless, but there's plenty of slop too. I'd argue we've also have yet to see the genre perfected, which is disappointing after all of this time.
We started with one that was alright and it's been all downhill since
It's just a perfect storm of cultural factors.
As for the question at the end there, who cares buddy? Keep enjoying the things you like.
Edit: Right now, it's usually Isekai with a side of Harem rather than a straight up Harem show.
Double Edit: Have you seen Love Flops? You should see Love Flops.
Also when you say "Isekai with a side of Harem" you mean animes like In Another World With My Smartphone, The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure, and as I mentioned before Arifureta right.
* Authors don't want to tell a story anymore, they want to sell a story. and they do that by copying the most popular series and then use the most generic settings to put their own spin on it.
2). Harems make up a good percentage of the sea of trash.
* Either a dime-a-dozen, comletely average nobody or a Kirito-clone that happens to be "the strongest" in the world.
* Girls falling in love over the simplest of actions.
* Literally everyone exists to hype up the Hero.
3). Harems aren't real romance...
* It's just girls showering the MC with attention and fighting other girls. Once a girl becomes part of the harem, any romantic progress grinds to a halt.
- Bad MCs (dense, boring, etc..)
- Blank Slate/Self Insert MC
- Fanservice
- Writing can be subpar when the goal is fanservice/lusting over the girls
Most harem fans (including myself) are in it for the girl, either rooting for your favorite, playing the "Who will win?" game, or just rejoicing in the fact that MC has a bunch of girls and all.
Now, one of the few harems that I do respect is 100 Girlfriends, because it dispenses with the bullshit. It knows its premise is ridiculous and never pretends otherwise, yet at the same time it fully commits to it. Every girl wins, every girl's feelings are taken seriously no matter how ridiculous their gimmick, it shows how not just the guy but the entire group enriches their lives, and it has genuinely heartwarming moments and even some pretty radical messages about acceptance. It's certainly not above wish fulfillment and fan service, but it makes clear that this is goofy, well-intentioned fun, not the deeper point you're supposed to take from it. Not every harem can or should be like 100GF, but if there were more stories actually trying to engage with the idea in more interesting and healthier ways and less that are just "sex sells and more is better", the genre's reputation might not be perpetually in the gutter.
