Need some convincing on Toradora!

So I’ve been really into romance anime this winter break, and have binge-watched a good few. One I see that keeps popping up is Toradora, It seems like a really good romance anime from what I’m seeing and hearing online. BUT the one thing that's throwing me off is the fact that the FMC compared to the MC looks like a little kid, I have never watched this anime yet so I have no clue if that's intentional or an exaggeration, but from clips she looks like a middle schooler dating a high schooler and it's really throwing me off and giving me the creeps a little. I NEED someone to convince me otherwise because I want to watch it but I’m not sure I can deal with the character designs.

THIS IS NO DISS TO THE ANIME. IT SOUNDS GREAT I’M JUST STAND OFFISH AND NEED SOME CONVINCING.

She's not a little kid, she's just really small, but fierce. She's the palm top tiger and she's a great character. Toradora is one of the greats.

The main girl “Taiga” is the main make it or break it for this series. Most people find her annoying which she is, but shes still a great character.

Go for it just because it is one of the few anime out there that actually has an ending.

Personally don't enjoy it. The Tsundere-ness is too excessive for me. And some scenes after she mellowed down made me cringe.

There are better romance anime out there.

I enjoyed it, but the drama can be too much for some people and the ending is a bit rushed.

I think you could give it a try since it's mainly in a college/uni setting.

I mean she’s just short. it isn’t that deep. if you want to watch it, then watch it. if you don’t for whatever reason, then don’t. It’s a great story and worth getting over the hang ups. to me.

Instead of leaning into the whole "they're high school students", the way it explores relationships is a combination of coming of age and adult problems. there's just so many great characters, and the most important thing is that the whole plot is revolves around the two main characters NOT being a romantic item - that is, the girl is in love with someone completely different from the very first second of the show, and it's about how the boy who likes her basically changes his whole life for the better because of his crush on her

the 3rd season was cancelled in production, which is a tragedy, but it has a healthy amount of episodes

the English dub is fantastic, FYI

Why do you think people like Toradora? Just kidding, but not really... It's just another play on the small girls with big trucks/guns trope. Some people are unable to reconcile the contradiction between someone fragile enough to want to protect, but mean enough to bully them. It elicits a psychological fascination.

It's an okay show, if you can get over the fact that the Palm Top Tiger looks and acts like a child most of the time, and as it is typical in shounen romance, the male MC is just strung along the circumstance.

Another way to go about this is to realize that anime characters never look like their age anyways, and develop a cognitive dissonance to trick yourself into having a blind spot. All anime veterans do this, am I right guys? That's why people *adore* the 400 year old -- but looks and acts and thinks like a 12 year old girl -- vampires from Dance in the Vampire Bund and Bakemonogatari. It gives themselves an "out", wink wink

Never really understood the whole 12 year old body 400 year old age stuff. To me it’s just a little weird especially put into a romance scenario, I’m more focused on the writing when it comes to romance but designs play a big part when it comes to visualization. And visualizing a 15-16 looking guy kissing up on a 10-12 year old girl despite being the same age sends a chill down my spine a bit. I really want to get invested in its plot as I heard it’s a classic, and It has good writing but these visuals of the characters are a mental block for me!!

It had its moments, but I don't think anyone's missing out not watching it. But shounen romance isn't my favorite genre, so take what I say with a grain of salt. There are better options, especially if you like characters that look and act more maturely. Like sure, we can come up with some kind of back story to justify why a character has to act like a tsundere, but at the end of the day, I think anyone with some awareness of the industry knows the real reason why tsunderes exist.

if you’re already decided that the design alone is going to ruin it for you then you’ve already decided? they’re the same age though iirc and she definitely does not have innocent kid mannerisms. if you don’t like tsundere avoid it but if that’s fine go for it it’s a classic for a reason.
