That's just what I thought. I am glad studios are picking up good IP's for multiple seasons right away more often now. Maybe we will have fewer one and done seasons. This was one of my fav shows from last year.

If it's that fast then it was always planned for two cours from the start. The reason they started calling these second cours season 2 are reactions exactly like yours.

Waiting a year for Season 1 Part 2? > Omg why does this take so long? Split cours used to be just 3 months apart. Ugh.

From the S2 announcement right after the show ended, I'm aware that it was most likely planned from the start.

I should have expanded my comment by adding that I didn't know how the production for S1 was. ie if they were struggling to finish episodes on time or had a good buffer and were already getting into S2 when the first one finished airing. I know the whole of production can take a while for ordinary (not quite the right word) seasons but I'm not sure how the process goes with pre-planned stuff like this.

I'd say it's more thematic. There's a clear line between the arcs so it makes more thematic sense to call them different seasons than one big season, especially when this is unlikely to finish the story. Season one has Clevatess get off his ass and discover more mysteries to go with his initial question. Season two will have him try to find answers to those questions. Season three (or a movie? the manga is not finished yet) will then finish things. All tied up in a neat three act structure.

But it also works for marketing.

Most of the season will probably take place at the school grounds. But it's not going to turn into HP. They're not exactly going there to study what the school teaches, it just happens to be the place they need to investigate.

Dark is isn't my worry - my worry is how mature the narrative design will be. S1 had some of the most mature narrative design I've ever seen in animanga. I am finding myself skeptical that a high school arc can match that, regardless of how "dark" some of the content may be.

Unlike many, I love me some high school setting anime, but I do hope that Clevatess is very much doing its own thing and won't flirt too heavily with the HS genre.

I've confidence in the writing that it'll do something interesting with the setting, but authors (and adaptation teams) often get a little self indulgent when it comes to leaning on standard elements like the Student Council, culture festival, sports festival etc or sprinkling in HS tropes, and I'm not so confident that this can be done without diminishing the flavor of S1.

That said, Alicia is one of my most favorite protagonists of recent times and I'd totally watch her in an ecchi HS romcom too lol

I enjoyed this anime a lot more than the Sentenced to be hero, which got a lot of praises recently.

While the latter arguably has better fight scenes, the fight animation in Clevatess is still really good and also it does not have an annoying loli that keeps yapping mid battle.

It's only been 2 episodes with Sentenced to be a Hero though - I think people hype things too much and go in with all these crazy expectations, the story has barely even started. Clevatess was incredible though and would agree that the first episode hooked me more than Hero and really scratched that dark fantasy itch

I really liked the concept and ideas of the story, but it ended up being quite disappointing. Not enough to say it's bad, but enough to make it very forgettable. I hope S2 grounds the story more instead of trying to cover too many things at the same time. Also I really hope they stop with the "it's dark, but actually not really" bait.

Also have to say, I loved the Ellie Goulding ED and I saw she finally released the full version and it was god awful. The video is some fifty shades of cringe and it sounds way better in the anime.

One of my favorite surprises from last year. I'm not super enthusiastic about a possible school arc. but looks we will have new magical beasts showing up as well so hopefully the dark fantasy continues and isn't diluted to school shenanigans.

And looks like Alicia is now in disguise / polymorphed? I'm hoping its an illusion and not a permanent new look (though that could also be interesting if written well).
