Fate series, what order to watch?

Can someone let me know the narrative order to watch the fate series?

I saw a few clips online of the show recently and it looks pretty cool but I keep seeing narrative order or chronological order

Hi SheepherderOld7847, it seems like you might be looking for an anime's watch order!

On our [watch order wiki](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/wiki/watch_order) you can find suggested orders for a ton of shows (hopefully including the one you're looking for), as well as information that will help you decide on what to watch for the more complicated series *<cough>* Fate *<cough>*.

Fate zero 24 EP > Unlimited blade works 24EP > Fate Heavens feel 3 movies

Heaven feel and UBW are different routes so same characters and timeline but different events

You have Fate/Apocrypha completely unrelated to the prioy

You have Fate Babylon that’s related to the gacha game Grand order BUT it’s fine watching as it’s own thing it’s 24 episode

And the new and my favourite one Fate/Strange Fake

You can watch this one without watching anything before it “maybe just fate zero”

SheepherderOld78472026-01-18 12:11

so i lowkey just started UBW can i just watch this one then that one?

VergilVDante2026-01-18 12:16

Which one?

If Fate zero then Yes and No because the two series spoil themselves it’s weird and don’t want to rant about it

But yes you can watch UBW > Fate zero but it’s ending will be spoiled but honestly that doesn’t matter that much

But fate strange fake YES you can watch it without anything prior but it has easter eggs

For example there’s a grown up character from Fate zero appears in fate strange fake and recognises Gilgamesh but other than that

There’s nothing that’s groundbreaking related to each other

But i do recommend UBW and fate zero first cause they are the basis of the holy grail in general while other anime take different takes of it

Yes. Continue ubw (the 2014 ufotable version).

After this you need to finish the main story with the 3 Heavens Feel movies.

Every story in the Fate franchise originates from/has some tie-in to the Fuyuki grail war of 2004 from Fate Stay Night (Fate/UBW/HF).

After that you can watch/play anything. (although if you enjoyed ubw and HF I recommend checking out the Fate route by playing the Fate Stay Night visual novel available on steam)

Fate Zero is a side story that was released later and has massive spoilers for some characters in the main story (especially Heavens Feel). You can compare it to the star wars prequels that tell you the details of how certain events happened in the past.

So stay/night doesnt exist?

DueSeaworth2026-01-18 12:22

It does but the adaptation is old and kinda scuffed (they tried to merge as much info from different routes in one since they didn't know it would get more adaptations)

temojikato2026-01-18 12:22

While that's fair, there's so much information there and it's really not that bad.

DueSeaworth2026-01-18 12:25

I know i watched it and it was fine but its not going to appeal to most people so why bother. If its going to turn people off from the franchise then just give them the ones thats easier to consume.

temojikato2026-01-18 13:16

I personally feel it takes away from the story not seeing it, an actual degradation of enjoyment.

I do however see where you are coming from, fair enough.

NamerNotLiteral2026-01-18 13:22

You don't really miss out on any information if you watch Zero -> UBW -> Heaven's Feel anime. Ufotable wrote them to be internally consistent.

And no, Zero doesn't "spoil" UBW/HF. It just turns some surprise reveals from the VN into suspenseful plot plots. The UBW/HF animes are *written* with the fact in mind that you already know things that you otherwise wouldn't know if you did the traditional VN order.

The only things you miss by not watching Staytge Fate route (2004 Stay Night) are some of Saber's character development, which doesn't really matter in the long run because it's exclusive to her without affecting the overarching plot, and Shirou's misogyny.

SheepherderOld78472026-01-18 16:00

i watched the first episode for both of them and i agree just from that. Zero is kinda like a weird type of first introduction to everything then UBW kinda expects you to know stuffs Thanks anyway i’ll watch zero first

AGlitchedPixel2026-01-18 12:02

The order will forever confuse me.

temojikato2026-01-18 12:14

Just watch it as released. Not watching stay/night is so dumb

SheepherderOld78472026-01-18 12:28

never said i wouldn’t watch it. There’s very clearly a chronological series of events that i wanted to watch in order to help me understand timelines n stuff.

temojikato2026-01-18 13:15

Wasnt directed at you brother, but those suggesting to skip it :)

DueSeaworth2026-01-18 12:17

UBW or Zero then Heavens Feel, the rest can be however order you want.

If you can stomach it then go with the VN (occasionally goes on sale in steam) or start with the Stay Night adaptation by Studio Deen (i doubt anyone will go this route tho)

Edit: You can also just watch the newest one airing which is Fate Strange Fake (with little context tho) and just enjoy the spectacle of it. Can always rewatch it after getting more context (youre not going to get every reference unless youve been following for years so just enjoy it).
