My Thoughts on My Hero Academia Season 3
This is one of the best seasons of My Hero Academia, and arguably one of the best seasons of anime in the past 10 years. That sounds extreme, but I'm not kididng. This is not an exaggeration. This is my third time watching through and the emotional beats still get me every time. There's two major points that makes this season so great, towards the middle and towards the end. The season begins with a training camp, which is good but doesn't rise as high as latter parts of the season. I did really like Kouta though, who hates heroes because his parents were heroes but died against a villain. He blames heroism for being left alone, but more importantly he feels alone despite clearly haivng people in his lives. Which seems realistic to me. I mean I could see a grown adult feeling that way, but this is a kid younger than Izuku. Of course Izuku helps him come out of his depression, and defeats the villain who killed his parents, just in time for Kouta to awaken his own Quirk. It was really great, especially the final clash between Izuku and Muscular. This section ends with the League of Villains, who infiltrated the training camp due to a mole on the inside that hasn't been revealed yet leaking information to them, capturing Bakugo after he goes all hot headed like Bakugo would and charges for them alone. This is the most important part of this season going forward.
This leads into several Pro Heroes, including All Might, having to save Bakugo, which directly leads into All Might doing battle with the leader of the League of Villains All For One. I love absoutely every part of this. I love learning about both of their Quirks. One For All was the Quirk of All For Ones brother over a hundred years ago. It was a useless Qurik on its own that couldn't do anything, which allowed him to pass on Quirks to another person, until All For One, (real name unknown, that's the name of his Quirk and his Villain name), another Quirk, which allowed him to stockpile Quirks. This created a century plus chain where each user of One For All would pass it on to a successor and make it stronger and stronger with every generation. However All For One's power is to steal Quriks from other people, and to give them out if he wants to, or just use them himself. It's suspected that he used this ability to steal an immortality or longevity Quirk from someone allowing him to live well over a hundred years. We also learn about All Might's past, that before he became the symbol of peace the world was a lot more chaotic, and he had a dream, despite not having a Quirk himself, to bring order and give the people a symbol to believe in. Put a pin in that, because that will be important in seaosn 6.
I'm not even gonna sugarcoat it, All Might vs. All For One is one of the best anime fights of the past decade, and based on everything I've watched I think it's arguably the best fight in My Hero Academa in general so far. The animation is superb, it is incredibly intense, and I while I don't normally touch on voice acting, considering some watch sub while other watch dub, (I'm the latter), but I have to give major props to Christopher Sabat as All Might. He was already one of my favorite anime voice actors, but this has to be his best performance ever. Better than anything in Dragon Ball Z, better than Zoro from One Piece, better than anything he's ever done. His performance is like 50 percent of the emotional beats succeeding. And speaking of which, that one woman covered in rubble, reaching out to All Might, crying out to him with tears in her eyes to keep fighting? All Might's reaction when he learns that Shigaraki is the grandson of his deceased mentor, Nana Shimura? All Might beginning to shrink, and struggling to keep up the act so the citizens don't realize that their "symbol" that doesn't feel fear or have any weaknesses was all a lie? It's all so masterfully done. And all of it ending with All Might pointing at the TV screen saying "now it's your turn." The citizens took that as a warning to villains, but Izuku took that as a direct message to him, that he is his chosen successor. And he probably meant it both ways to be honest.
But we're not done with the emotional roller coaster yet, because towards the end of the season Bakugo fought Izuku. This is where we really get a lot with Bakugo's character, complex characterization and psychology that has been built up for the entire series so far, a character arc that progresses quite far but doesn't conclude just yet, and the reason why I'm vindicated in loving his character against the grain. I said before that Bakugo is written extremely realistically. He was a kid that had tons of power from an early age, but no discipline imposed onto him, which caused him to be short tempered, violent, and arrogant. 99.99 percent of all of us would end up the same way if we had his life, it's almost inevitable. This fight adds more depth to him though. We knew before that he admired All Might just as much as Izuku, but here we learn that he's been blaming himself for All Might losing his powers. He believes that if he wasn't captured by the villains, All Might wouldn't have been injured and would still be the symbol of peace. And he thinks everyone is blaming him too, and it's been eating away at him. It's heartbreaking to watch, but very realistic. But there's more. We learn why he's been so harsh on Izuku. He knew that Izuku didn't have a Quirk when he was younger, and then he ended up acquiring one out of nowhere one day. And his anger intensified when he discovered that Izuku was given his power by All Might despite being so "weak" and chose him as his successor. And to top it all off he thought that Izuku was looking down on him. We get all that in like one or two episodes. It's incredibly emotional and so tightly written.
Two of the best moments are when he cries "Why was I the one to end All Might" which hits like a truck every time, and when All Might goes between him and Izuku and hugs Bakugo, assuring him that he's not to blame for what happened. Oh, the fight itself was great, too. I feel like this fight needed to happen for both of their characters. So now a few more scattered thoughts. I love Izuku's mother. In these types of stories the mother is either dead or just doesn't appear much, but Inko Midoriya does appear on occasion, and this season showed a very realistic side of her. She was worried sick about Izuku during the battle with the villains, and even tried to get him out of U.A. High School for his safety. All Might manages to convince her to change her mind, but it was still a great part. This season formally introduces Toga, a fan favorite character. I mean technically she's introduced last seaosn, but it's this season that we get to see a lot with her. Yes, I'm into toxic women, and so are you, let's move on.
