Oh they worked on chainsaw and hell's paradise OP and ED? Maybe I'll give it a watch.
People need to stop acting like AI just is a one button create. It's a tool like everything else. If it helps interpolate the images so the FPS isn't garbage and it does a good job, then it's a good thing. I'd watch it over 3d easily.
There's already countless examples of making one punch man 100x better with AI than the actual studio. People might argue, "But they used the anime as a reference!" Guess what this studio you mentioning is doing?
anticomet2026-01-18 16:02
It's a tool used by companies to avoid paying human artists while also stealing art without giving the creators compensation.
Vezolex2026-01-18 16:24
Judging by the FPS, it is not to avoid paying human artists, it is for smaller studios to be able to compete. Plus saying it's stealing art is also showing your lack of expertise on AI. You can train your own models on your own data, if you want a certain art style, you train it on your own art. There doesn't have to be any stealing whatsoever. You're so used to random people generating AI that you don't know how it works as a profession.
Also if we're being honest, the artists jobs are really really awful financially, you shouldn't be encouraging more people to live like that, it's worse than factory jobs. They could easily use this to pay a more respectable wage to a fewer artists rather than all of them starve.

>Judging by the FPS, it is not to avoid paying human artists, it is for smaller studios to be able to compete.
First, why judge by FPS? Every anime is done on 24 fps anyway and more frames is not always better.
Second, if Yaoyorozu, consisting of like five men and on a budget that literally was two yen found behind the couch and a pack of ramen, could make Kemono Friends (despite its very mediocre animation) and become a phenomenon overnight, then small studios surely can compete. They just have to focus on less series.
Examples: Studio Bind is a lot smaller than J.C. Staff, yet all of their works outcompete whatever J.C. Staff has. C-Station did the best seasons of Yuru Camp, against 8bit which most people consider has the weaker season of Yuru Camp. And C-Station is a small studio, 8bit is a large studio.
The only difference is size in library.
>Plus saying it's stealing art is also showing your lack of expertise on AI. You can train your own models on your own data, if you want a certain art style, you train it on your own art. There doesn't have to be any stealing whatsoever.
Except these studios aren't training their own models most likely (probably some external solution). And AI gets trained with a lot of data. And Qzil is a very young studio, with a miniscule portfolio. I am willing to bet my merch collection on it that it uses external data, which is, 99% of the time, stolen.
>Also if we're being honest, the artists jobs are really really awful financially, you shouldn't be encouraging more people to live like that, it's worse than factory jobs. They could easily use this to pay a more respectable wage to a fewer artists rather than all of them starve.
Yeah no, the fewer animators will not get paid better, as that profit is literally just cost savings. Also "shouldn't be encouraging more people", is literally just telling people stop becoming animator, which is currently a heavily undervalued, yet much needed job (in anime industry context).
Mariofluffy2026-01-18 18:14
It doesn’t do a good job here though, and saying it can do better than OPM S3 is not the flex you think it is.
Vezolex2026-01-18 19:16
This isn't AI, their upcoming show is testing it.
Who said it was a flex? If it makes it better, then it is better. Not every studio can be the very best. Plus it being better than your average studio in its infancy is kind of indicative of its potential.
jakota_doshua2026-01-19 01:59
>This isn't AI, their upcoming show is testing it.
This show absolutely uses AI for the background art, just watch episode 3 and pay attention to only the backgrounds. The forest and the rocks along the river/behind MC constantly change completely. It would be crazy for them to have a human make that many variations of a background and then accidentally use completely different backgrounds every other cut.
jakota_doshua2026-01-18 16:15
The AI in this show also very much shows. If you're watching this show and pay attention to the background art you'll notice how inconsistent it is, with the background constantly having some changes in different cuts even though characters aren't moving. There was also that time a giant mushroom just disappeared one cut and reappeared the next which could've been human error or AI but either way is just distracting and shows little care by the studio as was unfortunately expected
MaloraKeikaku2026-01-18 16:44
I tried giving the show a shot.
Outside of me not being the target audience at all, which... Fair enough, nothing I'd criticize a show over, the production felt so...Off.
It being AI slop makes sense then... I'd be so bummed out if I was the manga artist.
Vezolex2026-01-18 16:47
Cuts like that are usually human error, a layer gets turned off.
jakota_doshua2026-01-18 16:59
For the giant mushroom disappearing yes, the background art thing is almost definitely AI though the background is sometimes completely different but just a similar vibe despite characters not moving
lztsrts2026-01-18 16:59
> There was also that time a giant mushroom just disappeared one cut and reappeared the next
Which episode was that? Jeez i definitely did not notice that at all.
jakota_doshua2026-01-18 17:02
Episode 2, it's the giant mushroom that is supposed to be in between Luna and Henri to protect Henri
lztsrts2026-01-18 17:08
Around the 7 minute mark. Damn, that's wild, i didn't notice at all 😅
jakota_doshua2026-01-18 17:14
If you want a real trip watch the background art for the start of episode 3 when they're in the river, the rock formations constantly changing, the forest never adding up. Once you notice it's hard not to see all the mistakes and inconsistencies with the background art.
Adventurous-Exit58322026-01-18 17:23
Thx god im not the only one who noticed the mushroom disapearing. But it looked more like an error.
ii_Narwhal2026-01-18 15:21
The art style in this anime sure was a choice...
Ocixo2026-01-18 15:30
I actually find the art style charming in its own way. The background art looks pretty solid for example. The problem mostly lies with the overall production being rather mediocre.
CommanderZx22026-01-18 15:49
They've gone for a deliberate story book appearance, which matches the way the story is told like a fairytale.
Ocixo2026-01-18 15:58
> a deliberate story book appearance
All things considered, they’ve done a decent job with this. Not every anime can be like Ranking of Kings.
mgedmin2026-01-19 13:15
I didn't like the art style of Ranking. I prefer the look of the Champignon Witch.
ThisIsMyFloor2026-01-18 21:33
That matches my first impression of the show that it's a lot like European fairy tales. Like "there was once a witch where everywhere she went, mushrooms sprouted from the ground." A sort of third perspective narrative with peculiarities sprinkled in. Not the direct black and white actions either that I generally expect from anime. The boy who flirts with all the girls isn't a bad boy
I like it. The fps of the animation doesn't take away from the story for me. I like the art style as well. Feels like a fairy tale picture book.
abandoned_idol2026-01-18 16:12
How's the writing? I didn't notice that this was airing.
astrnght_mike_dexter2026-01-18 17:57
It’s great. This is a really unique show that deserves better animation.
Hippoboss2026-01-18 23:05
Serious question not being snarky but does it really need better animation? I'm enjoying it but if it had mappa or wit animating it I'm not sure it'd really elevate it that much. The story has those slow old-timey fairy tale vibes where the story is being told in a little box and not a big grand world if that makes any sense. Like we're in the book. Cute and entertaining sure, but I feel like the way it's animated is fitting. Just my 2c
astrnght_mike_dexter2026-01-18 23:18
That also describes Frieren but Frieren has great animation. This show looks very stiff and almost like a slideshow a lot of the time and it can be very distracting.
james_wargull2026-01-18 16:21
I think the style sells itself better in the actual show vs just looking at this clip. Its still a lower budget production, but like others have mentioned, the storybook look has been really charming.
suicidalllama2026-01-18 17:11
The characters look like they are on the background not in it. I think it's due to the contrast between the soft focus look of the backgrounds and overly sharp characters.
Whendfield1232026-01-19 06:19
The story is like a fairytale. The song in the first min of ep1 basically tell you everything you need to know.
DanDoReddit2026-01-18 15:39
That looks... strange to say the least.
I think it could work with a different visual style but it just ends up looking bad here (imo)
qwertyqwerty45672026-01-18 16:08
How can there be a witch if there is no witch hat?
Repulsive_Past_5482026-01-18 16:11
Watch till the end
CRtwenty2026-01-18 16:11
There is a witch hat though
abandoned_idol2026-01-18 16:11
All women are witches in medieval times!
Unless she dies in the trials, in which case she was actually innocent. The ones that survive the tests are witches!
Turpen_the_savior2026-01-18 16:35
Idk what about this animation is off, but this looks *bad*. Looks like a lot of still frames, and even the scenes showing movement seem choppy.
DearHRS2026-01-19 08:39
what no in-between animators does to a mudafaker
Kaellian2026-01-19 10:03
This show has no budget. but I still enjoyed every minute of it.
Great soundtrack, cute comedy, and good drama. Is it going to hold up? Who knows, but it was certainly unique enough to make the cut this season (kept 15 shows out of 40).
Having great animation help, but its not the only thing that make an anime good. This one offered something fresh with nothing close to it.
Commentaires
Despite the cutesy appearance of this show, it got some surprisingly dark undertones.
