Edit: Although #50 is a filler spot. It can be changed out for practically anything
Decent enough list though, minus the bad ones (who invited *The Wise Man’s Grandchild* here? Blud thinks he’s part of the team)
And what o-word?
Not to mention asserting something as definitive as a “Top 50 Anime of All Time” (or even just your take on it) and then having what amounts to a placeholder is also just asking for trouble.
Wow, i remember this one. I only watched it dubbed back in the day. Might be worth a rewatch.
One of the first anime i remember watching on Animax.
What are your top 5?
So you're telling me they're worthless. Trying to counteract your own biases (that I don't know) doesn't create an objective list, there's no such thing, it just creates a disingenuous one.
I could put together a lot of lists besides just my favorites. It depends on the use-case. Do I want to go for a specific vibe? Do I want to make one as diverse as possible? Do I want to highlight impressive productions in specific aspects? Just any notion of objectivity is foolish to chase in art. And yes, I am a pretentious bitch. Glad you noticed.
Apothecary Diaries is not done, and is not as consistent in its narrative flow as FMAB. If it was complete it would possibly be higher but unlikely to be #1
Madoka Magica is a show that heavily leans on its ending like Code Geass. It makes people tend to ignore the flaws. While it was largely amazing, on a rewatch its just a decent show. That's ignoring that the movies kind of detract from the experience. In the same way Im sure that the Code Geass movies do.
FLCL is kind of an off the wall coming of age story about dealing with puberty. It really doesnt have much going on besides how zany it is and unlike some overrated shows actually does have some depth to it (in the themes I just mentioned) I dont know why It would ever get the top spot, but its worthy of respect.
FMAB while not a perfect show is the closest anime has ever gotten to perfection other than maybe A Silent Voice, depending on your taste, from what I have seen at least. Again I cant comment on Perfect Blue.
You mentioned you were trying to make the list "objectively." What were your criteria?
Glad you like the list. Im curious if you dont mind sharing, which ones would not be on yours?
And yes, it was my primary time of getting into anime I guess. At the same time, I haven't seen much from outside of that time period that would be better than what I have listed. (I have seen quite a lot. I believe that the late 90s-early 2010s are the golden age of anime. We are in the Ice Age right now.)
Most of them wouldn't be. My top 50 list is below. We share: Code Geass, S;G, E7, NHK, Baccano, Clannad, YYH, Ef, TTGL, and FLCL. Some others like Darker than Black and Toradora used to be on my list, but got edged out over the years.

2. Monogatari
3. Aria
4. March Comes In Like A Lion

Series I expect to make the list after they finish airing: Bocchi the Rock, Oshi no Ko, The Summer Hikaru Died, Frieren, Call of the Night, and Ikoku Nikki.
> At the same time, I haven't seen much from outside of that time period that would be better than what I have listed. (I have seen quite a lot. I believe that the late 90s-early 2010s are the golden age of anime. We are in the Ice Age right now.)
I agree with you about that being the golden age, but completely disagree about us being in the ice age right now. I would probably argue this is the silver age. We actually are getting more great anime per a season now than we were getting back in the golden age. The amount of effort and detail being put into productions these days is insane. I fully expect at least 20% of my top 50 to be shows from the 2020s by the time the decade is through.
The reason I'd argue the golden is earlier is because of the creative freedom. During those years, there was a lot more willingness to take risks. Shows like Lain and FLCL were anything but sure bets. The industry was a lot more willing to just throw capital at creatives and hope for the best. Now it's been taken over by corporate interests. We still get a ton of amazing anime, but mostly adaptations.
I mostly am calling it the Ice Age because Frieren (translates as Frozen/freezing/stuck in German) is the #1 show.
I actually disagree. I think the hyperfixation on production value is horrendous. Yes we Ed have better LOOKING shows, but in the end its mostly a copy paste of the same cookie cutter money making nonsense that isn't actually very good, it just looks nice. No offense meant by disagreeing.
Which one?
>I mostly am calling it the Ice Age because Frieren (translates as Frozen/freezing/stuck in German) is the #1 show.
Oh, I missed your joke lol. I don't consider Frieren to be the best of this era, but it certainly has the votes.
>I think the hyperfixation on production value is horrendous. Yes we Ed have better LOOKING shows, but in the end its mostly a copy paste of the same cookie cutter money making nonsense that isn't actually very good, it just looks nice.
That is true a lot of the time. But there were always cookie cutter shows. It's mostly a numbers game. There are a ton more slop shows today, but there's also more great shows. I find the production can push a good show into being great. I am watching anime, at least in part, because I like animation.
The other factor is studios being a lot more committed to sequels these days. There's a decent pile of unfinished shows from the 2000s that would be favorites of mine if they were more complete.
I definitely wouldnt mind seeing some shows finally getting completed if the right can be acquired.
