Still searching for Planetes

One of my favorite series ever. the last 3-5 years i have been really struggling for good anime that fits into this sorta sub-genre. i dont want mecha or superpowers or trash-bending. i want kessler syndromes and orbital mechanics.

does this exist?

other newish shows i have enjoyed include Scavenger's

all recommendations welcome, i just paid for crunchy roll and nothing is jumping out at me demanding a watch

Majestic_Client12026-01-18 21:31

Understood Sadly I have non in that category

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 21:26

Uchuu Kyoudai

Freedom

Moonlight Mile

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:31

i enjoyed moonlight mile and Uchuu Kyoudai, i will def check out Freedom project, thanks!

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 21:37

No problem. Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame was pretty involved in it and it's interesting to see his influence.

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:42

ya, that was the first thing i noticed when i googled it. massive Akira fan. is Dallos any good? you think i would enjoy?

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 21:43

It's one of the bunch I haven't seen but intend to get to. I hear it's just okay, but it's famous as the supposed first OVA.

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:48

ofc Freedom Project isnt on crunchroll rofl

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 22:04

I wouldn't have thought so. I don't think their catalog is anything special.

porpoiseoflife2026-01-18 22:35

Sadly, there are no legal streaming options for Freedom anywhere in the world. I don't think there ever have been, to be honest, which is why it is such a hard title to recommend even though I love it.

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 22:50

not a problem, just trying to justify my recent crunchy sub. i will not be renewing.

Innalibra2026-01-18 21:41

First time I've heard someone else actually mention Freedom. Nice little series.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 21:44

Yeah it didn't set me on fire, but it's solid and especially fun at the start.

Wizmopolis2026-01-19 07:41

i cant find this anywhere.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-19 07:51

I just looked and it took me under 5 seconds. I'm sure you can find it if you put your mind to it.

Wizmopolis2026-01-19 17:44

super helpful comment, glad its on your go to streaming site

Innalibra2026-01-19 23:38

Annoying every episode is on Youtube except for EP02. I don't see it on any streaming platform but maybe I'm not looking hard enough. May have to sail the high seas for this one (look for Freedom Project).

Wizmopolis2026-01-20 04:18

in spanish

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-20 00:48

I didn't look for a streaming site. The sub frowns on unofficial information.

Wizmopolis2026-01-20 04:10

yeah there are no s3eds

ve_rushing2026-01-18 21:30

Cowboy Bebop

Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu: Die Neue These

Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199

Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo / The Orbital Children

...and the first episode of Memories

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:32

Bebop is GOAT, the others i couldnt get into

ve_rushing2026-01-18 21:41

>the others

1. Die Neue These which is the remake or the OVA from the 80s?
2. Kind of surprised that someone knows about The Orbital Children.
3. You didn't liked Memories?

Also another idea: Gundam **The Origin** is not that much focused on mecha, but on world building and space politics. It even doesn't have one working Gundam (mostly proto Zakus and Zakus).

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:49

1. the OVA from the 80s.
2. yeah, i wanted to like it
3. " "

ve_rushing2026-01-18 21:59

>the OVA from the 80s.

Check the remake (like 2-3 episodes at first). It has faster pacing and some of the sci-fi elements are fixed/updated.

gorambrowncoat2026-01-18 21:49

Space Brothers is probably the only anime I would consider close to hitting the same notes as planetes. It goes a little less hard into the physics of it all but overall its still a very similar show focussing on plausibly realistic space travel without too much fantastification.

Wizmopolis2026-01-18 21:50

yeah, this one was cool. got a bit loose towards the end.

nudebeachdad2026-01-19 02:46

Space Dandy is good for laughs

Oxu902026-01-19 23:58

Just searched Planetes is in Ceunchyroll. If it is not in your region use VPN :)

Wizmopolis2026-01-20 04:09

ive seen planets 20 times, i have it on my HD. im looking for Freedom as recommended

Oxu902026-01-20 07:20

Have you seen Orb?

Wizmopolis2026-01-20 08:06

no, looks very interesting. thjanks

EconomyProcedure92026-01-20 20:06

Used Blu-Ray (assuming you live in the USA & have a Blu-Ray player) is like $37 on Amazon. DVD is about $35.

Wizmopolis2026-01-20 21:10

i do not have a blue ray

EconomyProcedure92026-01-20 23:40

Most gaming consoles from PS3-now have a built in Blu-Ray player.

Wizmopolis2026-01-22 17:51

why would i buy a playstation?

EconomyProcedure92026-01-22 18:16

To play cool games?
There's stand alone Blu-Ray players that cost under $75 by now, or even cheaper if you find one at a thrift store (Goodwill for example).

While streaming is awesome, not everything you want to watch is available everywhere.

To be fair I have been collecting anime DVDs/Blu-Rays for years (along with select other stuff like Godzilla & Star Wars).

Wizmopolis2026-01-22 19:26

i have no interest in AAA titles.
