How far off am I here?

My son recommended some anime to me, and after viewing, I have concluded that MHA and Fairy Tale are the same anime with different abilities and localities. Don’t get me wrong, I like them both, but I couldn’t help but notice. Am I the only one?

They both are the same kind of anime, it's called battle shounen and they all follow the same general themes.

Redzephyr012026-01-18 22:32

They're in the same genre but they're not really all that similar.

Motor_Difference_8022026-01-18 22:35

They’re both shonen. I’d reccomend Attack on Titan, it’s somewhat a shonen and a seinen

VoidEmbracedWitch2026-01-18 22:52

AoT is simply shounen. Just because it does less of the typical battle shounen quirks doesn't make it a different demographic.

Here's also your obligatory reminder that [Bloom Into You](https://anilist.co/anime/101573/Yagate-Kimi-ni-Naru/) is as much of a shounen as MHA is.

AoT was a breath of fresh air after the Bleach hiatus. I honestly have never heard of Bloom into you. Any good?

Edit: clarification, responding to both comments

ActualRound76992026-01-19 00:11

bloom into you is a romance story between two high school girls. yes, it’s a great story and it pulls the heartstrings

aven2132026-01-19 01:22

Worse than Your Lie in April? If so, I think I may have to wait. Not sure I can take another hit like that.

ActualRound76992026-01-19 01:46

no it’s wholesome heart strings. not rips your soul out and shits in the void

aven2132026-01-19 01:55

That has to be the best analogy for it. If I wasn’t a broke bitch I’d send silver!

ActualRound76992026-01-19 01:59

full disclosure though, there is only one season. the story is complete in the manga though. I watched the show then finished the manga

VoidEmbracedWitch2026-01-19 00:22

For context: shounen and seinen are demographic labels for manga that can include most types of stories. In a vacuum, they say very little. AoT is shounen because of where its manga was released.

Bloom Into You is definitely worth trying if you're in the mood for a romance that leans towards being slow and introspective. Overall I like it a lot, ~~although it's a shame it only ever got 1 season~~.

I mean its a genre of anime.
If you think they're similar you might like this anime called Naruto.

But no in terms of story and characters they are wildly different

aven2132026-01-18 23:20

Naruto isn’t bad, I liked Shippuden better. A lot of character development in that one. Bleach (yes, even with the fillers) has been a staple ever since Toonami was a thing. But imo, for sheer ferocity of battle, it’s gonna be hard to top Berserk.

blaq_fenrir2026-01-18 22:36

They're way different. They're just both classic shonen, with all the tropes that go along with that.

TheTeaRex152026-01-18 22:36

Guy who has only seen Naruto watching his second anime: Wow this is really giving Naruto vibes

Goldheen2026-01-18 22:45

That was me watching black clover after only watching dbz and naruto

aven2132026-01-19 01:18

Not exactly. I’ve sampled others, but just those two gave me that feeling. Additionally, he told me I won’t feel that way after I get past the 2nd season of MHA.

invaderpixel2026-01-18 22:38

They’re battle shounen but they actually kinda make use of the extend cast. Also they’re large enough groups of characters that fans can pair them up and ship them together. Naruto might be worth a shot if you haven’t given it a try yet, also Black Clover.

aven2132026-01-18 23:26

Tried BC. I couldn’t handle hearing Asta yelling all the time. When he shuts up, the anime is good.

MusubiKazesaru2026-01-18 22:38

Not exactly, but they're both battle shounen so they're going to share similar traits. Neither are particularly standout.

Muffin-zetta2026-01-18 22:40

Yeah that’s about right. But again that is kinda what a genre is

muzlee012026-01-18 22:40

It's the same genre of battle shounen. They are all very similar with structires and basically just different power systems.

Playest_42472026-01-18 22:41

No you are dead on, they are both part of the same genre (like Dragonball Z and Naruto)

TheNobleMushroom2026-01-18 22:47

They're both battle shonen but that's about it. Power systems are different. MHA is a lot more philosophical and story based, FT is more of the generic,"By the power of friendship and plot armour I shall win!" stuff.

Sandman293312026-01-18 22:50

If you’re looking for other genres I highly recommend [Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End] and [A Place Further Than The Universe].

aven2132026-01-18 23:15

I’ve been asking him for suggestions because I fell really deep into isekai, and no not all of those deserve a watch.

Sandman293312026-01-18 23:17

Reincarnated as a Sword is really good if you haven’t seen it yet.

aven2132026-01-18 23:24

Seen it, like it, can’t wait til she’s strong enough to wield him properly!

abandoned_idol2026-01-18 23:48

Many battle shounen share a number of tried and true tropes.

Fairy Tail in particular has a mangaka that prints out manga in droves, so it's pretty hard to write originally when you make THAT much manga.

MHA I suspect had to write the second half of the story after becoming serialized.

Original battle shounen are rare.
