So, question from someone who recently started Re:ZERO
Does this show just have a slow start? I’m six episodes in, and the show just hasn’t been clicking with me the way other shows have. The closest I got was Subaru with the kids in episode five. To me, it just feels like Subaru’s walking around referencing a bunch of tropes in media and trying way too hard to be meta. I’ll admit that I like the twist at the end of episode six, but I thought I’d ask on here to see if I should still finish season one given my first impressions.

Trying to gauge if you're 6 in or 12 lol.
It does get better imo. But the mansion arc is slow.
No, it just had an hour long timeslot
The arc you're seeing in particular is about showing Subaru that the characters aren't tropes and archetypes. They're real people with their own motivations and contradicting feelings and that he should start treating their characters more seriously instead of viewing them as shallow cutouts for his own convenience.
The biggest example of Subaru's ignorance and conceited perception is the way he views and treats Emilia as his fated waifu main heroine. The next biggest example is the way he immediately assumes Rem and Ram are his friends and their cold treatment of him is the typical anime stereotype. The plot twist you reached shows that he was wrong and foolish for naively thinking so.
The arc you're in is slower but the show kind of works with a handful of set-up episodes each arc so if it's not clicking for you, I sort of doubt it'll change going forwards. (Season 2 is even slower than Season 1 for example)
Dropped that trash
But it eventually gets its foot down and progresses, and becomes the show that everyone loves.
The beginning is mainly how he keeps dying, and doesn’t quite know the rules of his power, and doesn’t know about the powers behind the scenes.
Stick with it, trust me.
That is only 6 episodes. I can't imagine how much more you are expecting to happen in 6 episodes. I am more curious what other shows you are comparing it to.
Subaru is super cringe and annoying and that almost made me drop it but for some reason it grows on you quickly. I never thought the pacing was off though.
Second half of Season 1 = very good. Really satisfying seeing stuff pulled together.
First half is Season 2 = kinda bad, too many new characters
Second half of Season 2 = terrible. Way too much focus on uninteresting characters at the expense of all the interesting stuff already built up
Season 3 = better than S2, but nothing too memorable. Allies becoming suddenly super powerful was kinda weird
However, it's generally not high on action and it's very focused on character development on a psychological level. It's very detailed on that aspect and if you don't pick this up or don't stay locked in and follow/analyze these developmensts, the show becomes a hit or miss for most people.
At that point either you either like the gruesome deaths or you find it boring, and/or you hate Subaru because he's not skillfull, nor strong and sometimes he fails horribly and pathetically.
