My Thoughts on My Hero Academia Movie 2 - Heroes Rising
This movie wasn't terrible, but it was kind of lackluster in my opinion. The story and characters just seem like a discount My Hero Academia Seaosn 3 in some ways. The main villain, Nine, is a discount All For One. He has a Quirk which allows him to steal and utilize other people's Quirks, and has the most generic motivations, aiming to create a society where only the strong rule. He's extremely shallow and has no complex goals beyond that. There's also a young girl in the movie named Mahoro Shimano, who's a discount Kouta, the boy form season 3 who hated heroes. In his case it was because his parents were heroes and were killed by villains and he resented that they left him alone and blames the concept of heroes and hero society on the whole. But we don't get a detailed, sympathetic explanation as to why Mahoro hates heroes. Beyond that, the only things that sets her a part is her gender, and the fact that she has a brother, Katsuna Shimano, who loves heroes. That juxtoposition could have been interesting, but even then it's not delved into nearly as deeply as I would have hoped. That is to say, barely at all. Of course the animation is amazing and the fights can be pretty entertaining. Towards the end of this movie is also the famous moment when Bakaugo uses One For All after Izuku temporarily transfers the power to him. That moment has kind of become iconic, and it is really cool don't get me wrong, I just wish it happened in a better movie. Or even better yet, in the actual manga. And this movie is manga canon. All of the movies are.
