Maybe that’s why it was downvoted when posted with no context
If you want to go sci-fi, the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes is unmatched and suits some of your likes. This one requires looking up its watch order, but I could provide you with one if you are interested.
Vinland Saga and Steins;Gate are two other strong series, one is about historical vikings and the other is likely the best written time travel series out there, though it's a bit otaku-y for a first anime watch.
A few other strong options are Seirei no Moribito, Kenpuu Denki Berserk (this is specifically the 1997 adaptation), and Cowboy Bebop
Planetes--about the problem we can find in the future in the near out -space travels because of the amount of space debris around earth.
Record Of Loddos War--- is like Lord of the rings in anime.
Mushishi--weird events as consequences of the contact of Humans with little living entities called "Mushis"
Baccano---is like Italian Mafia covered with supernatural flavors.
and a little cute comedy called Azumanga Daioh
watch those and you will have a good summary of what anime is.(the only main "decents" genres i have left out are mecha-anime and sports)
If you want something more slowdowned and long
Something like Naruto or one piece is a good option
Full Metal Alchemist -fantasy/steampunk
Kaiju no.8 **-** action/fantasy/scif**i**
Not quite Sci-fi but highly recommended as an introduction to anime; Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Makes reading a list a lot easier too
It’s a great show and mashes up pop culture ideas about aliens and ghosts, liberally drawing from supernatural and cryptozoology ideas. Similar to Dr Whi and Red Dwarf which often have episodes thened around specific ‘phenomenon’ or creatures.
It’s also a modern show that recently aired season 2, which I would reckoned over som wig these older shows that people might be approaching with nostalgic, if good, intentions.
- Game of Thrones: it’s a long series, so I can’t find a short anime off the top of my head. However, “Vinland Saga” may be a good fit here, though it is not a dark fantasy. If you want a dark fantasy with politics, Overlord may be of interest to you. Attack on Titan also fits well here as a dark fantasy with politics.
- The Expanse: One of my favorite shows. There aren’t anime like this one, but there are some with a few aspects. “Planetes” is the anime about space with more realism that I can recommend, and it is about 26 episodes. “86 (Eighty-Six)” is not about space, but it has some realism in terms of their futuristic weapons and has some of the politics and societal struggle themes that you see on The Expanse.
Look up genre you like, read the summary, see if you like it and watch.
And personally it's what's drew me in to anime. And anime was something I always thought was bullshit without giving it chance.
I've watched Spirited Away Probably 30 times over the years. Anytime I meet someone that says anime sucks I bet them I can change their mind. I don't think I've ever failed to do so in showing them that film.
Black clover for Magic
Haikyuu for Sports
In that case how about
Shigurui :Death Frenzy
Thats guaranteed to ease you into the anime world 😜
Okay being serious, go with Naruto or Dragonball, I even started with Miyazaki films myself.
