Tbqh I wouldn't recommend a shōnen but something more casual so they learn basic day to day conversations if they are young. So pretty much highschool setting anime.

Ascendance of a Bookworm

I recommend Pokémon over other anime for English learning, especially if you're a beginner. Unlike more complex shows, Pokémon uses repetitive vocabulary and simple grammar that's easy to grasp. With 1000+ episodes, you have way more content than a typical 12-episode series. And since it's globally popular, finding quality English dubs is effortless. It's honestly one of the best starting points.

Maybe Hyouka? there's a lot of discussions and dialogue in the anime.

It also depends on what genre or style of anime you'd think they'd be most interested in. So if you something similar already with TV shows and movies that's your basis there, or ask them if you don't.

This is coming from a Korean born that immigrated to Canada early in my life, where as a result most of my somewhat decent Korean has been from watching a lot of Korean variety shows and K-drama as a kid. As a kid I still visited my relatives in Korea, so over time while constantly asking what certain phrases meant or what happened in certain parts enabled my Korean diction to broaden naturally. Where essentially the more curious and fun they'll find a series, the more questions they'll ask about it.

Because mah, even in shonen anime there are some that can have dark or extreme themes. So it's key to understand what sort of things they generally prefer to watch

Wouldn't start with something short like a Ghibli movies first would be better ?

What is their age and English level?

AOT get them on peak there’s actually quite a bit of dialogue and discussions too

English? Why not go up a mile and try japanese too? That's how i learned it. (Yeah... It was kind of an obsession, i can hold conversations, count, and everything else but just don't ask me to write anything.)
