At least in stock trading you can gain money from dividends. Forex is like stock trading but without dividends, so the only expected income comes exclusively from selling at more than you bought something for.
Also stocks are based on real goods, so they tend to increase in value when there's inflation (I mean the increase in value balances out the loss due to inflation), meanwhile by buying money itself you always lose value with inflation.

Yeah, I think the closest we have is spice and wolf, but that's medieval trade and merchanting. There's some plotlines that handle foreign currency/goods value fluctuations and how to profit from them, like that one arc where the MC (a travelling merchant) was fucked when the price of goods he was planning to sell tanked hard due to an upcoming war campaign (forgot the details, I need to rewatch).
