Two years ago, Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction
Last year, Zenshu
It sounds like it would be boring but the writing, characters and direction are all 10/10. I can't believe it isn't more well known it's a modern masterpiece.
Also, I think Girls und Panzer is a great 1-cour sports show. It had modest goals and accomplished them so smashingly well they kept making more of the stuff. Anime-original!
Slice of Life + Romance: Sing yesterday for me
Mecha: Fafner
Other : Orb the movement of Earth
- Beatless
- Kodomo no Jikan
- Hyouge Mono
- Aishiteruze Baby
- Gallery Fake
Disappearance of Nagato Yuki. On its own merits, it's a cute SoL/romance that does its job well with its own dramatic arc. I think it gets unfair treatment by not being similar enough to "Haruhi".
[High School Fleet](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/136zmxv/wt_high_school_fleet_girls_and_battleships/). I like moe + military. Often compared to Girls and Panzer, I think HSF is much better executed. It deserved better.
[Scums Wish](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/14hf6c1/wt_scums_wish_searching_for_the_real_thing/). Often gets a bad rap because "ntr/cuck = bad" but that's never been the focus. It tells an incredibly strong story of how romance isn't the most important thing to one's well-being, but rather connection; especially for adolescents during a sensitive time. We err, we wander, and even if we end up where we started, we learned a lot along the way. That's where I think this shines. It's ending is also one-of-a-kind afaik.
- Seto no Hanayome (My Bride is a Mermaid)

2 of the funniest anime ever made but never brought up. It’s criminal, really.
Normal anime fans typically dislikes the mecha genre
Mecha people don't typically like cutesie anime character design
Granbelm falls exactly into that range where both audiences would avoid, despite this show being actually excellent.

The first episode is probably still my favorite (though every one is peak) so it’s great from the start.
It's a completed slice of life... In space.
Such as [this thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1q2sl8z/suggest_some_underrated_anime/).

* Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet (5 ep version)
this anime managed to create more impact for me in 5 episodes than some could manage in 24 episodes
Last one is the most bewildering to not get attention nowadays, since its the closest we'll get to a Hideaki Anno and Hayao Miyazaki crossover.
Maybe some older shows that are loved by fans but not mentioned nearly enough like Baccano!, which should be recommended and talked about just as much as shows like Cowboy Bebop or Trigun.
I really loved KOWLOON GENERIC ROMANCE from last year, but I didn't see it show up on too many people's end of year lists, so maybe that show will be underrated gem for 2025.
Lastly I'd maybe mention again a very fairly rated and generally popular show Dan Machi, or Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? I think this show is just a solid 7.5-8/10 fun comfort food Fantasy show. But due to both the cringe light novel name, and a rough second and third season that a lot of people got annoyed a being a poor adaptation turned a lot of people away from the series. The most recent two seasons of the show were great though to me personally. I feel like a lot of people who want the Progression Fantasy premise of a show like Solo Leveling would actually love Bell's progression through the Dan Machi story, they just have to get through some of the cringe anime harem aspects stuff first to get to it!
Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni)
The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyoukai)
Haibane Renmei
Super Cub
It's the animated adaptation of the Capcom fighting game. It only has 26 episodes, but in my opinion, it's an anime that deserved a little more love and recognition.
It has a simple plot: Edward Falcon sets out to find his father after he disappears, in order to find the legendary Power Stones.
During his journey, he will encounter many "peculiar characters," such as: a samurai, a fortune teller, a ninja, a martial artist chef, a strong gold prospector, a Native American, a hitman, and finally, a pirate crew.
The author said he was influenced in part by Asimov's Foundation and Michael Moorcock, among other sci-fi authors of course, and although I haven't read Foundation (yet; it's on my list) it seems to carry more familiarity with western sci-fi like Dune or The Expanse as opposed to a lot of sci-fi anime, though I'll confess that I don't have good frame of reference on Japanese sci-fi novels as CotS/BotS are the only ones I've read, so I'm basing the rest on anime adaptations. So, ultimately this may just be bias on my part.
It's also among the last proper Space Operas anime got, at least certainly at its scale. Good spaceship stuff is hard to come by without mecha being involved, and even then it's rare to see stuff to the level of scale and detail that CotS and LoGH had.
The novels are also quite good. They were given proper English releases a few years back. Unfortunately, no anime for the three most recent BotS.
* Genshiken
* Princess Jellyfish
* Beck
* Nodame Cantabile
* Great Teacher Onizuka
* Welcome to the Ballroom
* Detroit Metal City
Both are very unique. Bokurano is very heavy and touching at times. Super unique. And Nagi no Asukara deftly balances the most complicated love hexagon I've ever seen.
Fantastic children

Dogtanian and the three muskehounds
