So many old franchise are coming back. They weren't kidding when they said this is the year of the uncgem.
Ordinal43NotFound2026-01-20 08:02
VOTOMS, Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell following the OG manga, the Gundam Hathaway sequel...
We're truly in the unction this year!
_xXMockingBirdXx_2026-01-20 13:53
I just need someone to give me a zoids remake/sequel and all my favorite childhood mecha series will be airing again. It’ll be like my pre-teen years all over again.
SatriaProto2026-01-20 05:10
I'm truly excited for this new Patlabor anime!
MiraniaTLS2026-01-20 05:14
FYI: This is not a remake. It is a new Patlabor set in 2030s. This also has nothing to do with that reboot short from like 2016.
Yes, the original characters would be like for instance Noa Izumi would be around 57 if she had a cameo.
Icy_Air19542026-01-20 06:07
Which she will be, according to the Patlabor fan club chatter. Thanks for letting us all know about this today. You made my day, MiraniaTLS!
IKeepDoingItForFree2026-01-20 06:03
I feel like the reboot short (assisted by studio Khara) was what they originally used to try and entice members to join & secure the production committee to make EZY considering EZY has been announced since like 2018.
marioquartz2026-01-20 17:43
You think will be novice friendly?
MiraniaTLS2026-01-20 17:49
Like new to show? I imagine you could never watch any other Patlabor show this is like 30+ years later with new people. It might add to it if you know what SV2 is.
Icy_Air19542026-01-20 20:51
There's still time. Cram it all in before March.
1. OVA
2. Patlabor (first movie)
3. Television Series
4. New OVA
5. Patlabor 2
6. Patlabor 3 and a short called "Mini Pato"
7. SKIP The Next Generation. This isn't considered canon by fans.
Donnie-G2026-01-21 06:54
If it's anything like the OG Patlabor series, it should be relatively standalone. It's just cops with robots doing daily cop life things.
While there are story arcs, it has an overall slice of life feel to it. I might be wrong of course but I feel like you should be able to watch EZY standalone.
Chronigan22026-01-20 05:18
Sweet beans.
BalecIThink2026-01-20 05:23
If it's even close to the original in quality this will be an absolute must watch.
This-is_CMGRI2026-01-20 05:29
Looking baller, and again, full understanding that a 3D mech can look great when the art direction is on point.
Any episode count?
ArtiomSnack2026-01-20 05:41
8 episodes released in 3 batches.
IKeepDoingItForFree2026-01-20 06:00
8 episodes releasing as 3 movies.
turkeygiant2026-01-20 15:34
Yeah, there isn't anything inherently wrong with CG in anime when it is used with skill and intent, the problem is more that it seems like in the majority of cases it just gets used for terrible crowd assets, featureless fantasy manorhouses, and janky dragons/horses/cars. On the majority of productions it is unfortunately still just a shortcut to grab some cost and skill savings.
brucebananaray2026-01-20 05:33
Funny I rewatched Patlabor 2 last week and it was great film as own.
Seeing this teaser gives a bit whiplash seeing comedic side of things and less realistic.
I do wonder if Oshii come back to Patlabor for money purposes. But from my understanding that Headgear don't have a great relationship with him. Also, the fact that he was main reason on making EZY because he did live-action show behind their back, which they didn't like.
IKeepDoingItForFree2026-01-20 06:02
Oshii won't come back - hes working on the new Votoms over at production IG for now - which is also really funny because he is on record saying he is not a fan of robot anime but keeps getting stuck on mecha or mecha adjacent projects.
brucebananaray2026-01-20 06:05
I know about that, but he is probably doing it because he needs money to finance Chimera.
It seems no studio wants to make an anime film out of it. I imagine that he is probably finance it by himself, but he doesn't enough money for it.
IKeepDoingItForFree2026-01-20 06:09
Yeah - The other issue is that Oshii is kind of famous for burning bridges as well with projects and his last few were not good performers.
I would recommend checking out SteveMs Oshii series on youtube if you haven't already. Very well sourced and follows Oshiis career from the very start with TatsuPro to I think hes at just before Sky crawlers.
brucebananaray2026-01-20 06:12
I seen his videos on it and all of them are pretty great and in depth about it.
I hope SteveMs makes Sky Crawlers video soon.
IKeepDoingItForFree2026-01-20 06:16
Yeah I think he said he has 3 more videos basically before he catches up to Votoms - Sky Crawlers, a Live Action movie roundup, and his freelance/Vlad Love years.
Available_Can_76752026-01-20 16:52
Director Oshii's problem is that he tends to forcefully inject his personal consciousness, such as his personal philosophy, into the work he works on even by damaging the original style. Because of that, there were disputes among not a few original writers, or the original officials and fans. When he worked on PATLABOR, there was a lot of controversy when he produced the second and third theater editions and the drama versions. Many fans of the Japanese and Korean PATLABOR say that the 2nd and 3rd theater editions are like Gonggak-dong in the frame of PATLABOR, and that it was necessary to make them this unnecessarily serious for his personal values. Everyone would have tolerated it if they stayed at least at the level of the first theater version. Finally, the drama version with a lot of his views failed completely, and the drama production company that supported Oshii recorded the largest deficit of the year. The Japanese subculture industry community has widely rumored that Oshii was grabbed by the headgear members because he directed the original without the consent of the members.
Icy_Air19542026-01-20 20:27
I agree with your assessment about his personal overlay on work.
Oshii is an opinionated - pardon my French - dick. Ghost in the Shell is and will always remain an important film and actually transcends sci-fi into the realm of art; but his personality is one of a self-absorbed artist. In interviews, it's clear he's neurodivergent. His comments about other people and their work lands really poorly and his comments about "remakes" seem kind of ironic given Next Generation is literally a remake of the original show, and his upcoming Votoms is a remake.
For me, Headgear will always be a GOAT because of Ito, Takeda, Izabuchi, Yuuki Masami. Oshii was part of this team at one point and did some great work (the alligator, sewers episode is still one of my favourites). But it was never about just one dude's vision.
Available_Can_76752026-01-26 14:49
I agree with your point, but ironically, Oshii wasn’t in a position where he owned so much of Patlabor that he could just override the other Headgear members whenever he wanted.
If you’ve read any of the books or interviews about how the Patlabor project started, you’ll probably know this already, but Oshii was originally brought into Studio Deen—the studio handling the OVA—as the person they hired to oversee the production. Up to that point, he basically had no connection with the original Headgear members. There’s even a well-known anecdote from the very first meeting for the OVA after he was hired at Studio Deen: he said something along the lines of, “I’m a hired director, so I’ll only do as much as I’m paid to do.” From the start, he didn’t seem especially happy about being brought onto the project.
Even the way he spoke to the Headgear members at that stage suggests that, internally, Patlabor didn’t mean all that much to him at the time. And later on, once the theatrical film production began, it came out that he was deliberately dismissing the Headgear members’ opinions. It’s fairly well-known that this led to a lot of conflict after the movie and that their interaction and collaboration dropped off significantly. And then, in that kind of situation, he went and made the drama again while ignoring the Headgear members entirely.
Patlabor definitely helped make Oshii even more famous, but if you look at what’s been described in interviews and books about how he behaved within the Patlabor project, a lot of people see it like this: he was hired at first for money, and later—once the project boosted his reputation—he started acting as if it had been his project from the beginning, ignoring the original Headgear members and throwing his weight around like some kind of dictator.
That’s also why, even in Japan, he doesn’t get a great reception when it comes to Patlabor. There are even Patlabor fan community members who literally “raised a toast” when it was confirmed he wouldn’t be participating in this EZY project.
Icy_Air19542026-01-27 00:08
Wow - thanks for that information regarding Deen and how he was brought on as a hired-gun. It actually aligns exactly with my feelings about him as a director of Next Generation. That project was such a self-indulgent exercise in derivative filmmaking that it was embarrassing. It wasn't even executed well, so his comments further underline his clearly autistic behaviour (and that's not insulting autistics, as I myself am one). God, if you've ever subjected yourself to his "Battle Girls" or "Last Garm" movies, no-one would ever believe that was the same guy that did Ghost in the Shell or Patlabor 2.
That said, his sensibilities about timing and silence in P2 and Ghost in the Shell were really good; but it was also the others - again - on the project that balanced him out, like Hiromasu Ogura. His insertions of dogs, birds and fish also signal his own preoccupations and obsessions which have nothing to do with the IP, and he has proven himself a detriment to any future works like Patlabor.
I for one, am STOKED that he has nothing to do with EZY. We'll finally get the Patlabor continuation that we wanted.
567JT7652026-01-20 16:32
I don't think he really dislikes mecha anime in general. Just most mecha anime that have been made. When they announced him doing Votoms I was like "Of course he's doing Votoms. Vibe wise that's like the most Oshii friendly mecha anime out there".
They also had an info board of an interview with him at the life sized moving Gundam in Yokohama, in which he said "The Gundam looks too much like a toy. They should've made a life sized Zaku instead".
MiraniaTLS2026-01-20 07:56
He went off and did the odd live action show if I remember correctly.
SnooCalculations27302026-01-20 08:31
I mean the original patlabor was always goofy
Less_Party2026-01-20 11:08
>Seeing this teaser gives a bit whiplash seeing comedic side of things and less realistic.
It feels more like the tone of the TV show which had some tense parts itself but also spent a lot of time with these characters just dicking around.
turkeygiant2026-01-20 15:24
Also a surprising number of left field cryptid/supernatural episodes.
KTR19882026-01-21 00:13
That's why it always puzzled me when people argued that the third movie isn't Patlabor. It's basically your average standalone episode, just from the perspective of different characters.
gosukhaos2026-01-20 16:36
It does indeed follow the TV timeline according to the press release
gestaltgeek2026-01-20 11:19
Whether Oshii or Headgear go off to make separate Patlabor projects, Shigeru Chiba wins (especially if that is an aged Shigeo in the trailer)
567JT7652026-01-20 17:34
Also doesn't matter if it's anime or live action. Shigeru Chiba will always be there for it.
memeranglaut2026-01-20 05:38
This looks to be either an OVA or Movie trilogy.
in any case, HOLY F\*\*\* Brand new Patlabor in 2026.
abandoned_idol2026-01-20 05:51
Teehee, robot is using robot-sized handgun.
I wanna watch this.
Accipiter11382026-01-20 06:38
[Robot-sized handgun, robot-sized bullets, still with a wooden grip and reloaded by hand.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfV7v8V-pjM)
suboptimal_prime732026-01-21 18:29
One of the OAVs features a ghost story about a woman seeking vengeance on Labor pilots because a robot-sized ejected shell casing landed on her head.
Lotta fun bits like that in the show.
Icy_Air19542026-01-20 06:09
This is one show that was WORTH the wait. Patlabor is still one of most realistic and most congruent universes ever created, with incredible characters and writing. Really looking forward to this one!
alteisen992026-01-20 06:21
announced along side the teaser of the real grade kit.
dfiekslafjks2026-01-20 06:44
Thank goodness it looks like they tried to blend the CGI at least.
DoseofDhillon2026-01-20 08:09
What happened to the ~~cel~~ the game i loved
567JT7652026-01-20 16:18
The next old mecha franchise year after 2021 had Evangelion, Macross, Gundam, Getter Robo, and Eureka 7.
This year we have Gundam, Votoms, Patlabor, Rayearth, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, and if we're lucky the new Macross.
