But let's be serious: a polyamorous relationship or even an open relationship is consentual on all sides. Makoto is just a cheating scumbag who doesn't care about anything else than the pussy that's in front of him at the moment.
Selfish and/or desperate characters seem to be the norm or these stories because they wouldn't hold together or even exist in the first place without it. ORESUKI Are you the only one who loves me?, which is more of a harem parody, really runs with how selfish all the characters are for the humor in the story.
In that regard, Tales of Wedding Rings, which magically and artificially imposes the harem on a lead who doesn't really want it, makes everyone look a lot better because they are all forced into it and the other women ultimately defer to the woman who was the the long-time love of the lead, though the first issue also comes up there, but still leaves the rest of the women as having to settle and it pulls the curtain at the end without really resolving all of the intimacy issues with the rest of the harem, or having and raising children and heirs, which would inevitably lead to more messy situations.
One other story that I found interesting and kinda liked, which was more of a love triangle than a harem but ends with the characters choosing to all be together titled **Love and Lies** (Koi to Uso). The premise is in a near-future Japan, the government assigns your marriage partner to maximize happiness/demographics but the main character has feelings for one girl, but gets officially matched with a different girl. The other girl is kinda messed up so they wind up in a threesome that's not entirely functional but well done and it was intended to be illicit and dangerous, not glossed over and happy.
What I prefer far more is the approach of Amagami SS and Seiren. Amagami SS is based on a dating sim and Seiren has a similar structure despite not being based on a game. Instead of having the main character juggle a harem, it's 6+ independent romance stories where the main character winds up with a different girl exclusively in each one. It shows the main character with options and provides a roster of girls to choose from and debate who is best for viewers but doesn't try to let the main character have them all at once, nor does he have to reject girls and hurt their feelings while picking.
I'll also note that most men or women don't find it very appealing to see the reverse situation, sharing one girl with a bunch of other guys without choosing because she won't pick one or become exclusive and that's the price to pay to stay with her, which is why you don't see any anime with that fantasy except maybe stories catering to an NTR kink. It does make an appearance in the recent Dusk Beyond the End of the World without a lot of gritty detail. That anime setting makes "long-term commitment" or LC arbitrary in form and can include multiple people of any number or gender. One of these days I'll finish it because I'm curious if it bothers to try to show how complicated LCs work.
> The story of Nanakura Rin of the Drama Club, who has indisputable talent as an actress, and her senpai in the same club, Kitahama Eiji. With the power of her acting, Rin teases Eiji with a variety of personas, giving him the harem he's always dreamed of!
It didn't end in a poly but it 100 PERCENT SHOULD HAVE
I’ll assume you didn’t even read OPs post lmao
Girlfriend, Girlfriend
There’s no freaking way I’ll be your lover unless..(although full disclosure it takes awhile to get there)
