The anime I am looking for is something that plays with your emotion and/or makes you feel sad. For a bit of context I really enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion, Berserk, Your Lie in April for some examples.

86 is the anime I recommend most often for questions like this or "what anime would my dad like" and many more. It should be on everyone's list to try once. I almost avoided it because it is a mecha anime and I wasn't much of a fan of mechas at the time, but I'm really glad I gave it a shot after seeing it recommend quite often.
Steins Gate is also a really good choice. Make sure you watch 4 episodes before you decide it isn't for you. It starts out kind of slow, but it sets things up for something really good.
Re:Zero never comes to mind for me as an anime that emotionally wrecks me, but thinking back to my first watch, and I remember some of the moments were brutal and hits you in the feels. The MC is a bit more clownish sometimes. I think that is what throws me off. It's well worth watching though.
