There aren’t a ton honestly, but in case you haven’t watched it, Code Geass is the one that’s a must watch

Death note is one of a kind but try Parasyte, dorohedoro, and berserk

Photograpasash_Early2026-01-20 14:09

You wanna see badass protagonist? Maybe Kaiji

Ill-Turn-73042026-01-20 14:10

Death Note is excellent. Have you tried Pluto? While not so similar to Death Note, it's a great mystery, one of my favourites.

Pantheon is another great mystery but it is western made.

Also try Parasyte The Maxim - different to Death Note but you might like.

Monster. Don't read any spoilers.

Monster maybe

The mangaka duo that wrote Death Note later wrote another manga about writing manga. In this manga they dubbed the genre as “non battle battle manga”. People fight each other, but not in a normal fight with punches or super powers. They fight each other using their wits. I think that is what you are looking for OP.

I would recommend Kaiji Ultimate Survivor for you, as it fits this genre.

Monster is pretty different but the vibes are worth a watch if you love death note I bet you’ll really appreciate it

sisconking1322026-01-20 14:32

Detective?

Scrooge-McShillbucks2026-01-20 14:32

Dark Gathering kinda

nirvash5302026-01-20 14:54

Try Platinum End just because it's made by the same creators.

Cedosg2026-01-20 14:55

that mahjong manga/anime by the author of kaiji gave me the same experience if you can ignore the art style.

along with anything by the author of monster. not sure about billy bat though.

If u want psychological, then "Classroom of the Elite" is a great choice since death note is the best psychological of all time, then COTE is the best psychological of the current times

Dependent_Day_62982026-01-20 15:05

moriarty the patriot is amazing. it’s the successor to death note

Threep_H2026-01-20 15:17

Maybe take a look at Psycho Pass. Not the same genre, but the flair could be similar.

jfcat2002026-01-20 15:32

Erased.

Aloofairy2026-01-20 16:32

Psycho Pass

Black Lagoon

Parasyte

(one piece is more shonen, you'd want to lean more into dark seinin anime that can tackle existential topics)

daddyjohns2026-01-20 17:09

You want to avoid the shonen genre tag and possibly look into seinen for more advanced/adult topics/content.

Educational-Bird9212026-01-20 17:35

any thrillers/psychological horror/procedural stuff probably!

Playest_42472026-01-20 17:42

Do you want death note but Giant robots? Code Geass

Do you want death note but it's a Rom Com? Kaguya-sama love is war

Lost_Everything-Once2026-01-20 18:19

Psycho Pass

Emi_Ibarazakiii2026-01-20 22:11

Nothing's THAT close, but the closest I've seen is [Title]>!Talentless Nana!<

Or as another comment said, Kaguya as the Death Note of romcoms!

GrAyFoX312k2026-01-21 03:28

Talentless Nana feels like a deathnote light (pun intended). Code Geass like zelos22 said also

technojoe992026-01-22 22:43

It sounds like you're looking for a master architect genre, where the main character is a man with a plan. Both Death Note and Code Geass share that trait.

In that thread, I would recommend Parasyte (which starts chaotic but develops a plan over time) and Gundam 00 (which has a plan from the beginning but doesn't put the pieces together until the end).
