What with the villainess anime anyway?

Like they make a new villainess anime almost every season yet everyone of them only stay for exactly one season or maybe 2 cours then completely disappear from the face of Earth never to be hear of again. I had watch a dozen of them at this point and other than "My Next Life as a Villainess", none of them get a second season. Did they just bump and dump those villainess anime without any commitment to finish them at all?

This is what the anime industry does. In general, most anime are produced as something of an advertising campagin for the property as a whole. Anime are typically funded by a production committee model, where a bunch of businesses who all have some stake in the property get together and kick in money to hire a studio to make an anime to increase the name recognition and popularity of a property so that they can make money on the various products/services the businesses involved produce. That's why the vast majority of anime only have one season.

If a certain type of story keeps coming up as an anime, then that usually means an audience (almost always the Japanese audience) is out there that's interested in them, and the businesses see a market to tap.

Many, many shows are finished off after one season. The story is over.

I mean, that's just the vast majority of all anime. They make dozens of first seasons every season to try to boost manga/novel sales and see if any of them end up a major hit. There haven't been many villainess anime in the first place so far, so it's not surprising that there haven't been any huge successes.

It’s isekai for girls they make the same isekai male show every season too

Finally, someone said what has always been on my mind.

The real money is in Manga and merch.

Anime just makes it so people that would otherwise never read it have a look, and if they like the story, buy the Manga, which is always more profit than anime.

Anime is very expensive to make, which can explain why some series don't get sequals for years. Meanwhile the world story continues in the Manga.

Also, Anime almost never has a definitive "ending". The reason is because the Manga is still running, and the author may end it in a unique way, as happened for "We Never Study", where you had multiple endings for each character. Because of this, it might be decided to not do more than a season of Anime for both story and cost reasons.

Welcome to the fad anime genre of the season, where anime productions are created to surf in the hype and pump the sales of the original Manga/Light novel while the iron is hot.

Eventually you can find a diamond in the rough that leads to massive bluray and merch sales leading to a new season/movie rinse and repeat until there's nothing else to milk or the public don't care about the IP anymore.

After the isekai fad it's being replaced by villainess or banished from party type of animes.

Basically someone will come up with a somewhat interesting new niche genre e.g. villainess isekai and write a popular web novel (or occasionally manga), this new genre being very popular on the web novel site gets it enough clout for a light novel adaption maybe a manga adaption and eventually an anime. Then other less original authors see this and they all copy the success and write their own stories with the same niche genre and a couple of years down the line you get 1 or 2 new kingdom builder/villainess/demon king/reincarnated as [insertdumbobjecthere] etc anime adaptions every season.

You realize 99% of anime are just glorified ads, right? They’re there to sell you merch, whether that be the manga or figurines, etc.

Anime exists to promote and advertise the source material dude

Risk diversification is the name of the game, the committees that fund the production of an anime have multiple companies that all chip in a little for a single season and if something takes off *then* they'll commit to more. If it's not successful their losses are minimal compared to pushing for several seasons of one series that's not a guaranteed money maker.

The anime studios are also usually booked out for the next several years so if something does well enough to warrant more it'll be a while before a new season can get scheduled. Any series that has a second season announced at the end of the first and coming out within the next year was already planned that way from the start.

Most of the akureijou adaptations I've seen lately fall short of the source material and merely serve as ads for manga and light novels. The Last Boss manga, for instance, is miles above the anime in terms of content, but I'll admit the character designs were improved in the anime.

Princessitty2026-01-20 16:03

the most hyretical last boss queen is also getting a second season that is showing next spring

ghostpickleonastick2026-01-20 16:06

Lots of titles in lots of genres only get half an adaptation because the first season just didn't perform. Rather than put out a second season, they roll the dice on something new.

It's especially annoying because the source material for the "anime for girls" titles is usually finished, so all we'd need is one more season to finish something like Raeliana.

It's like a smaller wave version of the isekai trend and like most isekai, I just ignore and tune a lot of them out.

Knuckleheaded-beardo2026-01-20 17:02

Yeah, I haven't come across any in the villainess genre that have appealed to me.
