What is an anime you didn’t expect to like, but ended up loving?
I’ve noticed that a lot of anime don’t always make a great first impression at least for me. Some start slow have an odd premise or an art style that takes a bit to get used to, but once you stick with them they really start to shine.
I’ve dropped shows early before and later gone back to them only to wonder why I didn’t give them a fair chance the first time. Sometimes it’s the character development sometimes the story takes a turn or sometimes you just connect with it at the right moment.
For me this has happened with a few series I almost gave up on early like the anime called plastic memories. I’m curious what anime surprised you the most once you stuck with it. What changed your mind?

The entire series is now in my top 3
It's my number 1 now for few years since I watched it. I don't think anything can dethrone it at this point.
I do love how it just keeps getting better as the cast gets more time to interact.
The latest Nadeko arc is peak redemption.
And it comes with an built in filter in the first 10 seconds.
Best show I can barely ever recommend someone
Even thought 10/10.
The last two years the show I ending up loving the most despite having mixed opinions in the first few episodes has been The Dangers in My Heart
A few other shows that took a while to cook for me are Food for the Soul, Wind Breaker, and Delicious in Dungeon.
Still most shows I end up loving I know I already like from near the start.
Really appreciated it though.
And I would love a sequel
I didn't think I would like it very much. Instead, I appreciated the quiet of plot and relation development.
I wasn't really sure where to start and Dangers in my Heart had such glowing reviews, but the MC and synopsis seemed kinda cringe, and honestly the first season did start a little weak but I was so glad I stuck with it. Little did I know it would become one of my favorite shows of all time, and very few rom coms have come close to matching it.
There are so many "slow burn" romances that just have awful pacing and little character development, but BokuYaba absolutely nailed the slow burn.
The same thing happened to me. More than anything, I thought anime was mostly shonen, especially since they was/are the most popular in my nations. Then a whole new world opened up, and now I appreciate anime in general much more.
The Dangers in My Heart isn't the first of its kind that I watched, but it's one of the very few I can watch quietly.
The whole "serial killer" thing though I agree, it was a cringey dead-end and I'm glad the author dropped that angle almost immediately.
Ended up being easily in my top 5 and encouraged me to watch other romcoms.
i heard the news about the CGI bear, and the synopsis about finding gold sounds like knock off version of One Piece. but i was totally wrong. the anime is so good that i finish watching 2 seasons in 2 days
Appare-Ranman
I was just scrolling one day out looking for a show and sS it pop up. Didn't expect much but damn the choreography, art style and characters really got me. Excellent show.
I really hope we get a S2 at some point.
Also another Villainess series called May I Ask for One Final Thing?
I'd say it has really weird pacing, but leaves you waiting for next season.
Blending OP/ED into episode is ++ for me
You don't realise it until afterwards and you can't laugh about it for years.
I never dropped these but I'm glad I stuck with them.
Toilet bound hanako. I didn't like the first season at all. Second has been good.
Shangria LA frontier I didn't love. Saw it got rated an 8 and was like Hmmm guess I'll continue. It's been all right. Not an 8 for me. But worth the watch.
Akuduma drive. Idk why I stopped this one. And I'm sure I missed some of the pizzazz by not restarting it. But pretty solid.
Witch watch. I think this ones popular but for me it's a little much, but started growing on me. I think it's the episodic stuff. Where multiple mini episodes are in one 25m episode, just too jarring for me and takes me out of the watch. Again just me.
My dress up darling. Was a bit too fan service for me. Especially at the beginning. I assumed that's all it was. But gave it another shot and realized what it was doing. At least I think. I still avert at certain parts cause just not my thing but man if it doesn't make me remember some high school feelings sometimes
But it played it off perfectly.
Still can't get over the transformation sequence happening IRL with the explosions and shit
What changed my mind on it is that the show uses a lot of the same conventions that other anime do, but in unique and interesting ways. It's "kicked out of the party" and the MC is given every justification to be angry and seek revenge, but she instead seeks to find a peaceful quiet life. There's a "Scan" spell with an RPG stat screen but it serves multiple purposes when it's used (worldbuilding and exposition and foreshadowing all at once).
Oh, and the MC doesn't hesitate to kill a slaver who just murdered some people in front of her, which is a huge improvement over a certain show I watched last season that spent half its run time with people trying to convince the titular assassin that it's morally acceptable to kill fantasy Adolf Epstein.
It's weird, because the first anime series I ever watched, Sword Art Online, has a prominent romance sub-plot that's beloved by the SAO community, but I never thought I'd enjoy whole series based on the idea.
My Dress-Up Darling was the first I tried, and it really changed my mind. Then Horimiya, Spice and Wolf, Alya, Rascal Does Not Dream, Fragrant Flower, even 100 Girlfriends. I've got more on my watchlist, and even more I'm sure I'll eventually find. There's just something about it that I love, even as a forever-single piece of shit.
im generally not at all into cosplay, romances or uhhh.... animes that you'd be embarrassed to tell others you watch
that being said this anime is excellent. legitimately top 3-5 of what ive seen in the past few years, and im quite discerning about what i watch.
also, no, i do not tell people ive watched this.
If you told me I was going to cry because of a horse girl racing anime I'd think you were insane.
Season 2 is probably the best stand alone season of any sports anime. I don't think anything comes close to those 12 episodes
I usually don't watch music anime but I saw the how banger the opening was and decided to check it out. Ended up binging it in one day and getting hyped each time the protagonist went on stage.
Still waiting on season two as well.
I went into it knowing that people loved it for its nostalgic value rather than its .. actual value, but I ended up loving it so much! I rewatched it three times across my life.
Taking it seriously is such a dumb thing to do, it’s so dumb and it’s made to be dumb, which is why I hate comments that talk about how cliche the characters are, they’re SUPPOSED to be cliche.
Taking it as face value was so rewarding! It’s funny, simple, lighthearted, ‘watch-when-life-has-you-by-the-balls’ kind of anime, no thinking about any sort of plot, all characters are .. as flat as a sheet of paper but actually see development and growth which is also fun to watch, and it is phenomenal. It’s a 10/10 anime for me
It has... So much going against for like half the first season and I feel so bad for it. It's a very slow beginning and the whole show suffers from early 3D making it look like an entire show done in MMD... And from also being the first show entirely in mocap. But if you get past the first 8 episodes it really does get better and by then you get used to the rest.
Personally tho owning some of the settei, the show would have been a massive hit is at least the human characters had been animated, the sheets are insanely expressive and the mocap just really didn't do it justice.
What do you mean it's a story about a dude driving a taxi?
By the end I was 🤯
Have you watched the movie which I believe is just a combined version of the series ?
I started watching it because i thought the pink haired girl on the cover looked cute. I never imagined that it would be my favorite comedy in recent time.
I thought it was going to be cheesy and stupid, but it ended up being in my top 5.
I don't a lot of D.I.Y stuff, but I though the grey-haired character looked cute whilst checking out Crunchyroll's catalouge... Then I saw the intro on YouTube and saw a [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/FavoriteCharacter/s/D2YoSqEJNf) (shout-out to OP of that thread!) mentioning one of the characters from this show on r/FavoriteCharacters, so I ultimately checked it out...
Currently, it's one of my favorite toons of all!..
It ended up being one of my favorite Romance anime of the past few years.
Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon.
Recommended to anyone who liked Dr. Stone, Cells at Work, and other Mythbusters-adjacent anime.
Was never into that traditional stuff, but because of big praise from Gigguk, I started around when ep3nwas airing.
Greatest descision in my life, and an easy top5 anime
Also, Madoka Magica. I adore it but it took me two tries, years apart, to get into it. Don't know exactly what clicked the second time or why I gave up the first time. Maybe just a matter of headspace.
I didn't necessarily expect to dislike it, but I went in with the expectation that it was kind of a standard romance. Nothing wrong with that at all, I love a good romance manga/anime. I just didn't expect it to do anything different. It took me by surprise with so much emotional depth, deep-rooted trauma, incredible voice acting, well done Trans representation, and multifaceted well-written characters.
**Same could be said about Dungeon Meshi.**
This one is cheating though since I started the manga years before the anime was announced. My sister kept trying to get me to read it but I kept putting it off. Like, what could be interesting about people wandering through a Dungeon and eating monsters? Oh boy was I wrong. What starts of seemingly as an episodic monster of the week format becomes something entirely different, all while keeping the desire to eat at the core of the story. The biological and ecological approach to dungeon crawling is done in such a detailed and interesting way.
It also tackles some dark/complex themes like racial inequality, fantasty geopolitics, grief, the dangers of unchecked desires etc. while keeping it lighthearted and never getting too bleak. I also adore the characters and there is an insane amount of worldbuilding even outside of the main story (with The Complete Adventurer's Bible and Daydream Hour). Now I basically have a Dungeon Meshi shrine and a large full color tattoo from the series as well. I'm glad I decided to give it a chance!
Expected CGDCT; got existentialism, exceptionally intelligent character/dialogue writing and my first time ever crying during a show.
My brothers told me that there’s a new anime out and that I should watch it. I found spy x family boring at first, But after a few episodes I got back into it. and during my rewatch, I actually started loving it.
Normally into the full on action Anime’s but thought I would try something different. Thought i would watch few and put away but smashed out both seasons in a day. Loved everything about it.
Honestly this lady is my spirit animal and I'm mad I didn't try it sooner because of fmc lol
I didn’t expect to hate it but I thought I was just being nice & watching a shoujo anime with my girlfriend lol it’s one of my all time favorites now!
