What anime’s can I watch with my dad?
My dad has been really into Japanese metal/rock lately and he’s noticed that a lot of the songs he likes are actually anime intros. I believe this has led to some curiosity about the genre.
The thing is, almost every single anime I try to find for us to watch together has fan service!!! It makes me extremely uncomfortable to see big fat bouncy milkers when I’m right next to my dad. (I’m female by the way). I would like to find something without absolutely ZERO fan service and also like ZERO sexual references or sexual abuse references. I also don’t think my dad would want me to see gore or anything too violent.
Honestly, the anime’s that I have watched by myself have all either been bl or gl or some sort of romance and those are typically the only things I enjoy 😭. Don’t hurt me, but I find Shonen anime kind of annoying usually and I don’t think my dad would like it either. I feel like my dad might be too pretentious to enjoy most animes, so I’m kind of looking for something not so vapid.
We’ve watched a lot of Studio Ghibli together, so maybe something like that? I’ve never seen a show like that though, so I think a possible realistic goal could be something like Death Note? because it isn’t that vulgar from what I remember (he’s heard of it and every time he reads the description, he scoffs, so I think he thinks that it’s stupid).
Honestly, the only anime that I’ve seen that I’d be okay with watching with my dad is Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You), but my dad is typically not that crazy about romances.
HELP ME!!!!

Synopsis:
Dominating the world of indie music, Detroit Metal City (DMC) is a popular death metal band known for its captivatingly dark and crude style. Its extravagant lead singer, Johannes Krauser II, is especially infamous as a demonic being who has risen from the fiery pits of hell itself in order to bring the world to its knees and lord over all mortals—or at least that's what he's publicized to be.
Unbeknownst to his many worshippers, Krauser II is just the alter ego of an average college graduate named Souichi Negishi. Although he is soft-spoken, peace-loving, and would rather listen to Swedish pop all day, he must participate in DMC's garish concerts in order to make ends meet. Detroit Metal City chronicles Negishi's hilarious misadventures as he attempts to juggle his hectic band life, a seemingly budding romance, and dealing with his incredibly obsessive and dedicated fans.
Synopsis:
Oushin Girls' Academy is a respected institution reserved only for wealthy young ladies. Very few of its students excel enough to earn the title of Noble Maiden, awarded to those who embody the ideal Japanese woman of culture and refinement. Lilisa Suzunomiya, a girl of common roots, has suddenly found herself as the daughter of a newly remarried real estate mogul and seeks to become a Noble Maiden to prove that commoners like her can be noble as well.
The most difficult challenge Lilisa has faced in pursuit of this goal is abandoning her love of rock music to keep up the rich girl facade she must now wear. But her resolve crumbles once she happens upon Otoha Kurogane, the daughter of a prominent politician, skillfully playing the drums while rocking out in an abandoned school building. Despite initially being at odds, they embrace their passion for music together while leading a double life.
Synopsis:
Fourteen-year-old Yukio "Koyuki" Tanaka is a dispirited young boy with no goals in life. However, this all changes when Koyuki saves a strange-looking dog named Beck from being harassed by a group of local kids. The dog's owner, 16-year-old Ryuusuke "Ray" Minami, is an emerging guitarist and the former member of a popular rock band.
After Koyuki meets Ray again in a diner, the older boy leads him to his former band's meeting place and dazzles Koyuki with his amazing guitar skills. Slowly becoming interested in the glamour of western rock culture, Koyuki decides to start playing the guitar while helping Ray achieve his dream of leading the ultimate rock band. Together with Ray's younger sister Maho and a few other members, the two boys launch their career into the world of rock by forming a band called BECK. Beck follows the group's struggles and successes as they spread their fame across Japan.
[Symphogear ](https://youtu.be/ADFNy_eHgIk?si=u8o2UofUN5c9Kr9e) is a great series for people who like anisong. Its a magical girl show where the main gimmick is that the girls get power from singing during their fights. Each song is recorded specifically for the scenes that they play in.
Macross has great songs too along with jet dog fighting actions. [Macross Frontier](https://youtu.be/Dl0_mh6ICvk?si=ccohFNY7aUe4F1Xx#t=11m53s) is a good modern version to start.
Someone else mentioned Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and Frieren. I second both of those. I think Frieren does an absolutely wonderful job of capturing the difference in how someone with a ridiculously long life span sees the world from those with shorter life spans.
I'm also going to add Vinland Saga to the list. First season is violent, but it's violence with a purpose to the story and is VERY well written. Second season centers heavily around the effect that the violence of the first season has on the main character and is much slower paced, more of a drama really. It is very very good.
I'd also suggest Iron Blooded Orphens. Again there's a fair amount of violence but it's violence with a purpose, and digs deeply into the effect that the violence has on the characters. Also.... Giant Robots.
Another very serious, and heavy one is 86. VERY well written and incredible story. Again it is all violence with a purpose. It's not just violence for the sake of violence.
If you're dad likes cars/racing at all then maybe check out Initial D and MF Ghost. MF Ghost is dropping a new season right now and is a follow up to Initial D. I enjoyed both of them.
If you want some silly, light hearted, slice of life stuff check out New Game. It's one my son wanted to watch with me. Main character is adorable. Anime centers around her first job as a game creator.
If you want something that is just funny as all hells then check check out Buddy Daddies. It may not make the no fan-service list but it's hilarious. Another one I watched with my son. Think "Three Men and a Baby" but it's 2 assassins who take in a little girl and shenanigans ensue.
