I genuinely wonder if we are in the minority here these days. I remember a poll not too long ago where it was already getting closer, but reading comments here lately I get the feeling the current generation of weebs really just watches anime which are on their streaming services.
weirdowerdo2026-01-21 01:27
I could never imagine doing that. Seeing as my country is already a small streaming market, most streamimg services already have shitty availability of movies and series. Even worse for anime as its still not mainstream here.
Also... I want all them seasonal anime releases... Not just 3 or 4 of them.
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-21 01:41
Its definitely gotten "better" with licensing in my country too, back when I got into anime even big titles like Steins;Gate were not reliably licensed (and unlicensed shows arent even illegal to pirate)
But sometimes I read comments here and wonder "you really missed out on the best show of the season just because its not on your streaming service?"
MadCybertist2026-01-21 01:30
I pay for crunchy because $8 isn’t much. Otherwise I sail the seas myself as well. 140TB media server <3
HuTaosTwinTails2026-01-21 01:34
I'd rather just pay for convenience. I've been watching anime for 25+ years, sailing the high seas gets old and annoying.
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-21 01:46
sailing is convenience though, 99.9% of everything ever made in one place, compared to 4 or 5 different services fucking things up, having wrong subs, releasing eps late and not having everything anyway.
This is not even a joke, nobody has an active streaming license for fucking DBZ here. Of course crappyrole says its in their catalogue but when you actually log in its suddenly not available in my region. That happens so much I just cant be bothered.
If I actually had access to *everything* I would pay the convenience fee, but I already have Netflix and prime and I even had a dedicated anime service but that was bought up by CR a while ago and that was it.
edit - dont know why you are getting downvoted for sharing your opinion (and funding my hobby) though
username264372026-01-21 02:28
not just everything and more being in one place, unironically the now gone 9 and the current site i use have far better ui, features, and convenience than any streaming service i’ve ever used. wouldn’t switch to netflix even if they had everything and it was fully paid for.
mojizus2026-01-21 02:05
For me, it’s about convenience first and foremost.
It’s not as convenient for me to sail the seas as it is to just have the actual services. $20 a month doesn’t kill me, and then I get it in its full quality on all of my devices and TVs. I’m also just lazy, and haven’t been a pirate in like a decade.
I do generally sail the seas for live sports though. YouTube TV at $90 a month is just too much to stomach even if it’s more convenient to have it.
Cewea2026-01-21 02:14
Crunchyroll actually have most of the shows I wanna watch espcially after it fused with funimation, but for the few shows it lack I ofc have to sail the high seas.
it’s not that I don’t wanna pay for anime it’s just that some shows aren’t available at all in my region (Denmark)
comelickmyarmpits2026-01-21 01:41
Top quality sailing also depends on BD releases , how it will happen when Netflix want to erase BD out of existence
gravemistakes2026-01-21 02:02
I'm 40 years old. Haven't sailed since original Napster. This may push me toward it.
Arrrr.
particledamage2026-01-21 01:23
Are there subtitles at least better than crunchyroll? I know they suck to an extent but the bar is very low
stanman2372026-01-21 01:25
Netflix is significantly worse than Crunchyroll. They generally make no attempt at translating any text on screen unlike Crunchyroll.
particledamage2026-01-21 01:34
Ah. Bummer. Fansubbers please come back!!
comelickmyarmpits2026-01-21 01:43
Even restyling extra effort for Netflix subs, cruncyroll miles better than netflix
HuTaosTwinTails2026-01-21 01:32
No. Netflix subtitles are atrocious.
particledamage2026-01-21 01:34
I haven’t been subbed to Netflix in years so I truly didn’t know. This sucks so badly
Time_Fracture2026-01-21 01:59
Netflix doesn't have typesetting to begin with.
So when there is a Japanese text written somewhere in the anime (let it be signs, labels etc.), it's either translated like usual subtitles in \[brackets\] or don't translated at all.
giitaru-kun2026-01-21 01:39
What I don't understand is that Netflix thinks everyone wants to watch everything on their platform, expects us to pay the same price.
What if I just want to watch anime? Then the $17.99 USD price becomes questionable. Probably would just subscribe once in a while and binge, or find alternative methods.
The other issue that Netflix has other than overpriced is that it sets up anime on a failure path. Instead of doing weeklies, it thinks that anime should just be all binged all at once. That'll cause the anime to be only talked about in the beginning of the quarter, then not to be talked about again until another season launches.
heroeNK252026-01-21 01:13
If this mean we are getting dub on release i for once am really happy
Wavenstein12026-01-21 01:18
That's what I'm telling myself too.
PhaseSixer2026-01-21 01:19
Right im shocked JJK is going to be so far behind
alconnow2026-01-21 01:13
Guess that means no western blu-ray releases for their shows
CrimsonGear802026-01-21 01:21
only the ones that they produce with netflix. Jujutsu, chainsaw man, etc will still get releases
ZhuTeLun2026-01-21 01:21
Wheres my god damn Dungeon Meshi Blu Ray Nextflix??
This_Elk_14602026-01-21 01:23
Why do they not want you to give them more money it makes no sense.
Im_still_at_work2026-01-21 01:27
because then you own your own stuff instead of depending on netflix
eetsumkaus2026-01-21 01:39
that makes no sense. People still watch streams despite owning physical copies. That's what the Japanese market has shown. Physical copies are more collectibles than replacements for streaming.
b0bba_Fett2026-01-21 01:41
Because they're evil. Plain and simple.
42tfish2026-01-21 01:49
I will still own my hard drives.
TripolarKnight2026-01-21 02:30
For now, until the US tech giants convince people cloud computing is acceptable.
Cyno012026-01-21 08:09
I bought a 28tb drive in february for $320, bought another november for $370, 28s have been out of stock since then so just bought a 26tb drive last week for $415, same drive is $460 now. Everything is fucked.
My gaming computer died in september too, i was sorta waiting to see specific GabeCube specs and pricing, but the part list i also put together in sept was MORE expensive on black friday already and just unaffordable now, i was hoping Steam Machine + VR would be <$2k, but now im hoping just the Steam Machine is <$1500.
jardex222026-01-21 10:38
Leaked priced for the Steam Machine indicate it'll be around $1K, depending on the storage option you pick.
stifle_this2026-01-21 01:28
Especially when Crunchyroll has already offered a good case study for them to do both physical sales and streaming.
zeroibis2026-01-21 02:27
It is not about money it is about control.
In the future they can change the content if something in the show was not to modern taste.
BrianShogunFR-U2026-01-21 01:26
That's what i've been saying for months.
It was a popular show, right? I'd like to think it's getting a release sometime soon (whenever the hell that is...if at all)
Jasoman2026-01-21 01:32
I get the batman reference
This_Elk_14602026-01-21 01:23
And when the license ends it will just cease to exist. Like Baconno but even worse.
Ekillaa222026-01-21 01:43
What happened to Baconno
eawtcu152026-01-21 01:49
It’s not on any streaming sites you can legally watch due to licensing issues and the physical releases are incredibly hard to find
GyozaGodfather2026-01-21 02:26
[deleted]
Namelessgoldfish2026-01-21 03:01
The point is that people like financially supporting things they like
godaikun752026-01-21 05:40
I agree fundamentally that we need to support these companies. Or at least demand that they rerelease out of print anime or put on streaming for ppl who want to consume anime legally
Vindicare6052026-01-21 11:54
If the company takes away all ways for customers to easily pay for their product they cant act surprised or upset that customers will go to other markets to find what they are looking for.
SasquatchRobo2026-01-21 03:46
Yes, we know about piracy that's not the point
japzone2026-01-21 01:53
At least in North America, the licensing void. You can't stream Baccano anywhere, and the Blu-rays are Expensive Out-of-print Aniplex.
So basically your only option is the seven seas if you want to watch it.
alconnow2026-01-21 01:57
The UK did have blu-rays via Anime Limited but it’s out of print now
daddyjohns2026-01-21 01:57
Netflix isn't aniplex! They'll sell the streaming rights for 100 years before they let it disappear.
One_Weird23712026-01-21 02:35
It will remain on the High Seas.
SirAlex5052026-01-21 02:44
Just pirate it?
Querez2026-01-21 04:19
That's not really the point. Piracy will of course almost always be an available option. The point is that it shouldn't *have* to be the responsibility of randoms online to preserve and keep available all the anime that exist.
TheMoonCreator2026-01-21 04:31
If you leave it up to streaming services / rights holders / etc., they'll do whatever makes them the most money, which includes letting anime become unavailable. Given that piracy preserves what streaming won't, it being the responsibility of random individuals (or communities, really) to preserve such content is, frankly, a good thing. It's not even like music where some services give you the option to download songs.
Neutron_Starrr2026-01-21 03:12
What's baconno? Didn't find any results on google
Shimmering-Sky2026-01-21 03:33
A typo, the real name of the series is Baccano!
Abysswatcherbel2026-01-21 01:38
Reaaaaaaaally doubt even 1/4 of MAPPA shows are going to be Netflix exclusive to justify that
dumasymptote2026-01-21 02:09
Netflix releases blurays of their shows all the time though.
Mindless_Bad_15912026-01-21 02:47
why doenvoted? this is literally true
xenon24562026-01-21 02:50
Some of them did
ThisManNeedsMe2026-01-21 03:05
Yeah Arcane, Cyberpunk, Devilman Crybaby and Castlevania got a physical release. Though Edgerunners and Devilman Crybaby are quite pricey deluxe editions. I wouldn't say it's all the time though. They just randomly decide to release stuff physically.
ColaFlavorChupaChup2026-01-21 03:10
I think their anime might be the exception. Cyberpunk Edge Runners got a Blu-ray. Also Castlevania (animated but dunno if that counts as anime)
Vazhox2026-01-21 04:01
Why not? Their other shows have
Phyzm12026-01-21 05:28
MAPPA has worked with Netflix before and those titles are on blu-ray. Im sure they'll reserve those rights in the contract.
Salty1452026-01-21 01:14
Crunchyroll gonna be big mad
CrimsonGear802026-01-21 01:21
why?
Salty1452026-01-21 01:26
If Netflix moves to make MAPPA titles exclusive, they’re gonna lose a major cash cow.
SameEnergy2026-01-21 01:33
They will be exclusive. Netflix with a body blow to Sony.
CrimsonGear802026-01-21 01:54
mappa and netflix have had a partnership since 2020. there have clearly been mappa shows on other services since then.
JJK and chainsaw man aren't going to suddenly be exclusive to netflix. and neither are shows that they don't produce with netflix. this doesn't make mappa exclusive.
TichoSlicer2026-01-21 01:15
Mappa is dead.
makinamiexe2026-01-21 01:15
ass
theforbiddenroze2026-01-21 01:15
Streaming service hating snobs are gonna hate this one lmao.
I just know it hurts their souls that MAPPA is partnering up with them as well lol.
Bleatmop2026-01-21 01:22
I don't get the hate. More anime availability is good, is it not? Deals like this bring in more money which means more anime. I don't see the downside.
the_scottishbagpipes2026-01-21 01:16
Enshittification continues unabated I see
Quiddity1312026-01-21 18:45
English speaking anime fans currently get anime quicker, at a higher quality and cheaper than they ever have. You clearly arent familiar with the days when if you wanted to watch an anime you liked you had to pay $30 for a VHS tape with 2 episodes on it with so-so video quality and that took at a minimum a year to come out after its Japanese release.
why not post the primary source? or is that not a “whitelisted” article to post on here for news?
___
edit: you made a previous news post using Netflix page but not this one… why?
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-21 01:26
>the two companies will work together on new projects with a global perspective — from story development
Rip Mappa I guess
County_Difficult2026-01-21 01:39
Can I ask why?
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-21 01:51
Netflix as a company has a fetish for pushing certain agendas. (Tbf Amazon does too.)
And In general I dont want any western company fucking with anime, give them money, but shut the fuck up about the shows. If I wanted to watch western slop I would consume western slop.
proglution2026-01-21 01:40
Yep. Exactly what anime needs. Aiming for the “global” and “modern” audience 🤦♂️
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-21 01:53
Just like when Disney said anime has too overexaggerated expressions..
SSjjlex2026-01-21 01:26
their other post about netflix viewership from a couple hours ago was from netflix directly so there really is 0 reason for it to be this way lol
-Work_Account-2026-01-21 01:20
Watch we still won't get Kakegurui season 3
theGRAYblanket2026-01-21 01:34
No we get americanized live action kakegurui instead lol
klaviersonic2026-01-21 01:38
I think they already did. It’s called Bet. It looked terrible lol
Absorbent_Towel2026-01-21 01:45
You are correct. I never understood the name change. Way to sneak it passed your entire fucking fan base as well as under market it to a new audience
klaviersonic2026-01-21 02:00
Let’s be honest, fans of Kakegurui were not going to watch this mess
Absorbent_Towel2026-01-21 02:37
Thats fair. I also never attempted to even watch although I did know about it
doubleoeck12342026-01-21 06:21
The name got changed because it's really just a new story with the same premise. They didn't want people to watch it as "Kakegurui live action". It not being a 1:1 copy is probably why it was actually successful viewing figure wise, it's getting more seasons. It's not just an objectively worse Kakegurui like a lot of live action adaptations. I've seen people who watched it and didn't know what Kakegurui was
I watched a few episodes and it was fine. The WWE Wrestler Seth Rollins had a cameo out of nowhere where he beats up one of the main characters, I thought that was hilarious since he basically brutalised the guy and it's so out of nowhere
Catboy14Yume2026-01-21 12:34
Kakegurui also already have a Japanese Live Action Adaptation staring Minami Hamabe,
So I guess the creative team decide to make it different than the existing Live Action Adaptation.
JRA17062026-01-21 02:01
I've seen the anime so I thought it'd be sort've dumb and haven't watched it, but some people i know have said it was good. And it's getting a season 2.
I'm pretty sure it really isn't an adaption though, it just takes the characters and tells it's own little thing.
Mynabird_6042026-01-21 02:21
We might even get a season 3 of Bet before we get a season 3 of Kakegurui.
TheNoFrame2026-01-21 03:46
I am good with Japanese live action lol. Opening plays in my head on repeat.
-Work_Account-2026-01-21 04:00
We have Kakegurui at home:
BET
nezeta2026-01-21 01:43
Hasn't the director been busy working on Attack on Titan and Dorohedoro?
AdNecessary76412026-01-21 02:42
There are other directors at the studio, including those who were already Hayashi's right hand men for the sequel and spin-off.
Rarietty2026-01-21 01:57
or Yuri on Ice anything
dododomo2026-01-21 02:23
For fuck's sake Netflix, please make a gay guy happy and fund the damn movie or a season 2!!! 😭
Quiddity1312026-01-21 18:37
At least we have Kakegurui Twin, granted there's no Yumeko...
This_Elk_14602026-01-21 01:22
The contract ensures animators at Mappa will have to work even harder for less pay! /s
Nekko_XO2026-01-21 01:23
What does this mean for Chainsaw man?
tripleaamin2026-01-21 01:33
It should still be on Crunchyroll. I think this is for anime they coproduce together.
postac_czy_usionsc2026-01-21 13:18
Crunchrool is sony, sony is in good relations with netflix will propably be on both platforms
HumansNeedNotApply12026-01-21 02:26
I think this is for new projects.
Doublethree12026-01-21 02:30
Netflix has made these deals in the past before (their most successful one is WIT) and they're pretty much always original IP (or might as well be like Grimm Variations). As far as I can tell My Melody & Kurumi was the only one based on a pre-existing IP they needed permission for.
AmarDikli2026-01-21 04:55
And The One Piece Remake. It's a Netflix project animated by WIT Studio.
DirectionExact312026-01-21 01:23
This can’t be good…
keznaa2026-01-21 01:26
Just driving more and more people to the Seas.
LimLovesDonuts2026-01-21 01:58
Ironically and I will probably be downvoted for this, this actually likely will have the opposite effect. Whenever Netflix actually gets a proper license, they can at least release the anime in global territories without asterisks to which regions get it and which regions don't. If you already have a Netflix subscription, watching anime is a lot easier than trying to convince someone to pay for Crunchyroll which is pretty much only popular in the western countries but missing in Asia where Netflix also dominates.
Welcome to my Ted talk. Netflix generally has more reach.
Ok_Carob_32782026-01-21 02:03
People who subscribe to Crunchyroll are mostly limited to those who already watch anime on a regular basis.
Netflix, on the other hand, can reach a much broader audience and attract far more viewers.
LimLovesDonuts2026-01-21 02:05
Yup, pros and cons.
Anecdotally, whenever Netflix gets an anime over here, I do generally tend to notice more of my friends watching it and going "hey xxx, did you watch xxx on Netflix?" which doesn't really happen on Crunchyroll but this largely depends on what friends you have.
feb9142026-01-21 02:19
Yes. Pretty much shows of every kind gain worldwide notoriety when they get broadcasted on Netflix because it doesn't only cater to hard core viewers.
Jazs19942026-01-21 02:32
Shame about Netflix costs and clamp down on account sharing.
I'm still paying £4.99 for Crunchyroll like i did back in 2012.
I didn't mind too much about the clamp down on different households as I still used it alot anyways, then they upped the price 2 years in row then I cancelled.
With anime it's either Crunchyroll or the high seas, never had 2 different streaming services like Netflix/prime or Crunchyroll/Hive etc. The high seas has everything regardless of licensing
keznaa2026-01-21 02:22
For me, I haven't had Netflix in years because they keep raising their subscription and there isn't enough shows I would wanna pay to watch. I had Crunchyroll but third terrible handling of anime made me cancel that sub. A couple months ago too lol
kazuyaminegishi2026-01-21 02:31
The only people who hate anime being on Netflix are specifically users on this subreddit.
The more hard-core someone is into something then less perspective they have on the average user. Netflix and other streaming services are great for providing a reliable legal way to watch anime, that also allows consumers to speak with their wallet.
Piracy doesn't do any of those things and is only useful for watching a series and basically nothing else.
Guilty-Tell2026-01-21 03:09
Yeah if you use Netflix with a VPN from any english speaking asian country you get so many stuff which you can not even watch anywhere in the west. Taiwan and Singapore got a massive anime collection on Netflix for example.
Neutron_Starrr2026-01-21 03:22
It really depends on where you live, here in Italy it's a fucking mess, if you want to watch seasonal anime you have to pay for like 3 different services, and if you want to watch something older, with multiple seasons, licences could be so fragmented that some services has the firsts season and someone other has the rest.
First-Variety7142026-01-21 02:21
I'll subscribe to Netflix 100 out of 100 times over Crunchyroll, I already pirate pretty much everything, but there are times when a Netflix subscription is something I'll want again, usually if I'm watching something on like a Roku for family or a future partner.
Lunchb0xx872026-01-21 02:25
Netflix will also go after sites harder the more exclusives it gets
notathrowaway752026-01-21 04:19
The opposite is true. Anime being available on the most popular streaming service instead of niche ones like Crunchyroll would drive people away from piracy.
keznaa2026-01-21 04:45
It would depend on what the anime is I suppose. But personally I wouldn't subscribe just to watch one show I may like from MAPPA since I don't really care for most of what Netflix has.
IWentToJellySchool2026-01-21 10:58
Nope. maybe for people like us who watch on crunchyroll or use the seven seas method. But Netflix dwarfs Crunchyroll in number of people that are already subscribed. It will bring in more viewers than it loses.
XerGR2026-01-21 01:31
I dunno why people are mad. Netflix anime are pretty good to amazing.
The problem is they refuse to fucking market them properly
ceribaen2026-01-21 01:41
Netflix I think is also better about simuldub releases.
comelickmyarmpits2026-01-21 01:43
And sub them properly
kazuyaminegishi2026-01-21 02:37
This is the biggest issue I have with Netflix subs. People can whine all they like about Crunchyroll subs being late, but at least they are accurate.
Netflix subs can often times completely change what a character is saying. An example off the top of my head is Yuji answering Todo's question of what kind of women he likes, what Yuji says is the complete opposite of what the subtitles say.
The more Japanese you learn by ear the more egregious it gets.
comelickmyarmpits2026-01-21 05:02
This and restyling culture of subtitles in anime.
Started with fan subbing and crunchyroll carried it forward, but netflix fk all of that, they treat anime subtitles like your average web series closed captions, no soul in them.
Now there aren't any fansubbers only restylists (thank god atleast they still exists)
One of major reasons I sail seas for anime on Netflix, netflix should stay away from anime. Crunchyroll is okay...... As long as they don't fke up restyling and accuracy of subtitles
HarshTheDev2026-01-21 08:57
Wait what are restylists? First time I'm hearing that term.
tripleaamin2026-01-21 01:48
Tbh at least Netflix anime are easy to find on their service. Finding anime on Amazon and Disney actually feels like they are trying to hide it.
Aliensinnoh2026-01-21 01:55
Crunchyroll subs are superior. Just look at the big culling game presentation. Crunchyroll did a much better job at making sure that all the onscreen text was translated. Netflix exclusive means that even pirate sites are stuck with shittier subtitles.
comelickmyarmpits2026-01-21 10:28
Yeah people defending netflix don't get how worse the experience would be for sub watchers
alconnow2026-01-21 02:01
My problems with Netflix:
1. Barely any western blu-ray releases for their shows
2. Video player isn’t suited for translating onscreen text
3. I personally hate it when they dump all episodes of a show. **Love Through A Prism** being the most recent example.
4. No communication when it comes to delays. **My Happy Marriage** season 2 finale wasn’t available on Netflix in the west but it was up on Netflix Japan iirc
SameEnergy2026-01-21 01:32
Means fewer anime we can buy.
XerGR2026-01-21 01:34
Crunchyroll might have to act like an actual company for once. You know, like releasing actual good subs, or for example even releasing subs as lately they randomly forget that too.
Also i’m all for Anime studios getting funding. Remember, the best era of anime came when studios were allowed to piss away money and hand draw absolute art
abandoned_idol2026-01-21 01:38
They won't.
And people will keep buying the subscription.
Crunchyroll will become more profitable.
Customers will keep complaining.
And some users will even say that you shouldn't pirate anime because the quality is worse than Crunchyroll (despite that being false).
xzerozeroninex2026-01-21 02:06
Eh pirate sites just rip subs from Crunchyroll though,so pirate watchers gets the Crunchyroll experience lol.
abandoned_idol2026-01-21 02:09
Yeah, before Crunchyroll we'd get better quality subs from volunteers.
No one is safe from the collateral damage of legal streaming.
That said, pirate sites always have much better uptime, features, and user experience compared to CR. I never see any ads (thanks to tools).
xzerozeroninex2026-01-21 02:11
Because before the only way to get anime was to buy dvd’s,sub groups would buy a dvd from Japan, rip it and subtitle it 6 months after the anime airs in Japan. With simulcast sub groups became irrelevant so they just rip Crunchyroll subs so they can simulcast new animes. And before we would be lucky if 20 titles out of 40 would be subbed legally, now 90%-99% of new animes get licensed by streaming services.
abandoned_idol2026-01-21 02:14
Yep.
I hate simulcast. I'd rather just get better stuff. We were already on a 6 month time lag back then, so it didn't make a difference to get it 6 months earlier in that first iteration.
I hate legal streaming so much.
I can't wait to see CR antagonize everyone even more by trying to pass off machine-translation (I mean, AI!) as subs.
Zhukov-742026-01-21 06:39
I think that this will result in Sony being even more aggressive about acquiring anime licenses.
Perhaps this will finally push Sony towards making some sort of major anime acquisition.
poeghostz2026-01-21 01:39
Damn. I hate Netflix subtitles and steaming schedule for anime. Keep anime on dedicated anime services that know what the hell they're doing.
cshin092026-01-21 01:40
Should this worry me? Could this lead to increased censorship?
HumansNeedNotApply12026-01-21 02:33
>Could this lead to increased censorship?
No? Could lead to even more gore if needed/wanted by creators, no television networks to worry about.
ghostpickleonastick2026-01-21 01:40
Netflix has, through its many Netflix Originals over the years, firmly established its reputation for both quality and consistency.
(That reputation being dogshit.)
yournamehere10bucks2026-01-21 01:44
Sometimes....I miss ADV.....
xzerozeroninex2026-01-21 02:08
ADV still exists as Sentai Filmworks.
Catten42026-01-21 01:45
I hope Mappas working conditions get better... or well just the general anime working conditions in general.
Jusenkyo_52026-01-21 01:49
This article is a whole lot of nothing.
Netflix will continue to exclusively distribute some of MAPPAs titles. Will they fund future ventures for the studio, will they have a say in the shows that the studio produces or how they produce them?
A strategic partnership doesn't mean much in this context, I'm curious to see where this goes.
xzerozeroninex2026-01-21 02:04
It says they will collaborate,so I think that means Netflix will co-fund some new titles and has a say in the content.
Jusenkyo_52026-01-21 02:05
That could be true, but considering the article specifically cited CSM being self funded with no production committee it's speculation.
I guess we'll all find out together lol.
xzerozeroninex2026-01-21 02:09
Self funded by Mappa though and would already have deals with other streaming services in place.Like the Chainsaw Man movie was released outside Japan by Sony Pictures and will stream on Crunchyroll soon.
dododomo2026-01-21 02:42
Hope this may be a chance for mappa to finally make that Yuri on Ice movie! (or season 2 at least)
SnooConfections64752026-01-21 05:42
Yuri on Ice is a dead IP. Neither Netflix nor MAPPA owns the rights to YoI, so obviously this announcement has nothing to do with it, but also the director and creator of the series left the anime industry and the rest of the staff members already moved on.
HumansNeedNotApply12026-01-21 02:31
I think they expanded the partnership to Netflix funding some projects besides being a distributor, the article points that this new deal is only for the new projects in development, i don't think it's going to count for CSM.
Jusenkyo_52026-01-21 02:33
I would think so too but the article doesn't say that.
Own-Mess-18622026-01-21 09:36
"the two companies will work together on new projects with a global perspective — from story development to merchandise" we know what global perspective means.
Jusenkyo_52026-01-21 13:25
The article calls out that MAPPA already has a global focus though lol.
Mrgibs2026-01-21 15:43
This is the real concern. I don’t want a global perspective, I want a Japanese perspective.
ITCPWW2026-01-21 23:36
yep. really odd from the "i love diversity because there's so many different types of food in my area" crowd want to take the puritanical western torch to any media with a cultural identity.
random_confusion2082026-01-21 01:53
What does this actually mean? Like is this just going to be new anime, because as much as crunchyroll sucks, I don't believe for a second they'd risk losing streaming rights to stuff they already have, like JJK, Chainsaw Man, and Hell's Paradise. I know Dorehedoro is a Netflix exclusive, does this just mean we'll get a season 3 sooner rather than later.
Time_Fracture2026-01-21 01:56
This could mean more shows like Ranma 1/2 remake.
>These will be distributed exclusively in over 190 countries and territories via Netflix.
I love it when they are aiming for a worldwide release. More reach = more audience.
Fluffy_Grapefruit02026-01-21 01:57
Amazing…
kahabraham2026-01-21 02:12
They better not delay episodes to release alongside dub or fucking divide by parts.
unga_bunga_mage2026-01-21 02:13
Pay. Your. Goddamn. Animators.
Kadmos12026-01-21 02:16
At least when Crunchyroll and HIDIVE regularly market their anime via social media. Yeah, Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+ often fail in that dept.
Gatlindragon2026-01-21 02:19
Good, now do a Gantz remake.
wks_5262026-01-21 02:23
NOOOOOO I HATE NETFLIX SO MUCH NETFLIX IS THE WORST COMPANY OF ALL TIMW
Miyuki222026-01-21 02:24
Up next - Netflix buys Crunchyroll.
WMan372026-01-21 02:24
This sucks because netflix bitrate lately is absolute dogshit even on my good internet that can download 110 megabytes per second.
Watching The Summer Hikaru Died felt like watching a 240p quality bootleg copy with how much the bitrate can't handle those dark internal transformation animations. Jujutsu Kaisen is a very cinematic anime that will be ruined by this partnership.
AzaleaDaylight2026-01-21 02:26
I'm sure this is the time they finally get anime streaming right.
Surely. /s
proarnis12026-01-21 02:31
That's a good thing if they actually fund more anime works. If u don't like netflix u can just use other methods to consume said anime so don't see how this doesn't benefit most fans.
arconte32026-01-21 02:40
I dread this as much as I'm sure Japanese studios love the unlimited western tech money they could get. Lazarus shows the potential nightmare of what could happen. The animations stays in japan but the writing and directing is moved to the west and produces good looking garbage.
Pacify_2026-01-22 06:38
>but the writing and directing is moved to the west and produces good looking garbage.
What do you mean, the entire writing team was japanese and the director was Watanabe....
I'm not sure how much we can blame the west for the writing being subpar here.
Training_Bother_16632026-01-21 02:43
First Wit Studio and now MAPPA.
No_Engineer_26902026-01-21 02:48
If they are trying to cut off the japanese cartel, they will be banned from committee backed productions lol
NyankoMata2026-01-21 02:50
For how much Crunchy makes trouble I'm at least glad that we get blu-rays. Will forever be mad about Sailor Moon Movies not getting any because of Netflix
Galactus17012026-01-21 02:55
Each time Netflix gets a series, I know I won’t get a freaking Blu Ray box set. I need to add My Happy Marriage and The Fragrant Flower to my collection. Screw Netflix.
RB4K---2026-01-21 02:58
Yuri On Ice Movie lets make it happen
sensual_rustle2026-01-21 03:00
well that sucks
PixLaXhun2026-01-21 03:11
fuck netflix
samkiller2002026-01-21 03:28
WIT studio was a partner with Netflix, Netflix paid money to help WIT to train animators and make some Netflix exclusive animes such as
Vampire in the Garden(2022)
The Grimm Variations (2024)
Moonrise(2025)
Love Through a Prism(2026)
Not sure whether Reddit likes them or not, in my opinion, at least Netflix is rich:)
fakuryu2026-01-21 05:40
Loved Vampire in the Garden.
I haven't seen the rest, but my curiosity is piqued.
gamikhan2026-01-22 00:01
Those have been some of the absolute worst stinkers of the last 5 years
And I love pretty much anything Wit does, those are just as dull, boring and uncreative as a media can reasonably get.
Cahnis2026-01-21 03:40
This is how anime dies. Anime has always been japanese animation and not global animation
zapman4492026-01-21 04:50
Please don’t suck
Crazyripps2026-01-21 05:21
Man it sucks that physical media will continue to slowly die. Love actually owning physical Blu-ray’s and anime
Neo_Techni2026-01-21 05:51
They're remaking Dororo starring a black man, who remains quadriplegic for representation reasons.
dagot232026-01-21 06:44
I am vomit
TheStupid_Guy2026-01-21 07:55
Yay more Netflix jail and delayed episodes /s
AnActualPlatypus2026-01-21 08:05
God fucking damn it
Own-Mess-18622026-01-21 09:34
Prepare for the worst.
detarameReddit2026-01-21 11:04
I'm not sure how I feel about this partnership; on one hand, Netflix is definitely the western anime distributor that works closest with anime on the production side of things, so this was just a natural evolution and might actually help creatives. On the other hand, I don't feel great about Netflix getting involved in anything, ever. Where will blu-rays be released in the west? Would studio-licensor integration result in even less creative freedom due to additional pressure to make safe shows? And so on.
Commentaires
Also... I want all them seasonal anime releases... Not just 3 or 4 of them.
But sometimes I read comments here and wonder "you really missed out on the best show of the season just because its not on your streaming service?"
YouTube TV at $90 a month is just too much to stomach even if it’s more convenient to have it.
it’s not that I don’t wanna pay for anime it’s just that some shows aren’t available at all in my region (Denmark)
Arrrr.
So when there is a Japanese text written somewhere in the anime (let it be signs, labels etc.), it's either translated like usual subtitles in \[brackets\] or don't translated at all.
In the future they can change the content if something in the show was not to modern taste.
It was a popular show, right? I'd like to think it's getting a release sometime soon (whenever the hell that is...if at all)
So basically your only option is the seven seas if you want to watch it.
JJK and chainsaw man aren't going to suddenly be exclusive to netflix. and neither are shows that they don't produce with netflix. this doesn't make mappa exclusive.
I just know it hurts their souls that MAPPA is partnering up with them as well lol.
why not post the primary source? or is that not a “whitelisted” article to post on here for news?
___
edit: you made a previous news post using Netflix page but not this one… why?
Rip Mappa I guess
And In general I dont want any western company fucking with anime, give them money, but shut the fuck up about the shows. If I wanted to watch western slop I would consume western slop.
I watched a few episodes and it was fine. The WWE Wrestler Seth Rollins had a cameo out of nowhere where he beats up one of the main characters, I thought that was hilarious since he basically brutalised the guy and it's so out of nowhere
So I guess the creative team decide to make it different than the existing Live Action Adaptation.
I'm pretty sure it really isn't an adaption though, it just takes the characters and tells it's own little thing.
BET
Welcome to my Ted talk. Netflix generally has more reach.
Netflix, on the other hand, can reach a much broader audience and attract far more viewers.
Anecdotally, whenever Netflix gets an anime over here, I do generally tend to notice more of my friends watching it and going "hey xxx, did you watch xxx on Netflix?" which doesn't really happen on Crunchyroll but this largely depends on what friends you have.
The more hard-core someone is into something then less perspective they have on the average user. Netflix and other streaming services are great for providing a reliable legal way to watch anime, that also allows consumers to speak with their wallet.
Piracy doesn't do any of those things and is only useful for watching a series and basically nothing else.
The problem is they refuse to fucking market them properly
Netflix subs can often times completely change what a character is saying. An example off the top of my head is Yuji answering Todo's question of what kind of women he likes, what Yuji says is the complete opposite of what the subtitles say.
The more Japanese you learn by ear the more egregious it gets.
Also i’m all for Anime studios getting funding. Remember, the best era of anime came when studios were allowed to piss away money and hand draw absolute art
And people will keep buying the subscription.
Crunchyroll will become more profitable.
Customers will keep complaining.
And some users will even say that you shouldn't pirate anime because the quality is worse than Crunchyroll (despite that being false).
No one is safe from the collateral damage of legal streaming.
That said, pirate sites always have much better uptime, features, and user experience compared to CR. I never see any ads (thanks to tools).
I hate simulcast. I'd rather just get better stuff. We were already on a 6 month time lag back then, so it didn't make a difference to get it 6 months earlier in that first iteration.
