kuma backstory its my favorite in the anime, i cry every time i see it
StrawHatCook2026-01-21 02:54
Poor little Kuma. He suffered so much.
sylinmino2026-01-21 03:00
Bruh, I *just* finished this arc recently. This backstory is so heartbreaking. Kuma deserved none of this.
(Also, Egghead in general was one of the best arcs so far.)
realrimurutempest2026-01-21 03:03
Kuma’s whole backstory was a masterclass in writing by Oda in my opinion.
AgentHibachi002026-01-21 03:18
What makes it so different to me is that unlike many of Oda’s backstories, Kuma’s was the only one I can recall where he NEVER truly lost his faith in Nika and heroes existing in the world. He found one in Dragon but the hero that he had been dreaming of since he was a child in slavery turned out to be the boy he bet his future on.
Without Kuma there’s no hope for the Sun God to shine on everyone else. It’s also so poetic that the very first time we see him Post Timeskip, we see him sitting under the sun protecting the Sunny….under Nika😭😭😭
abandoned_idol2026-01-21 06:24
Sunny Go...
Oh god... I didn't notice! What other sun things have I missed?!
Original_Employee6212026-01-22 04:59
I'm pretty sure Luffy does the Nika pose when they are dancing around the bonfire in the Skypeia arc.
kaiser_kerfluffy2026-01-26 06:55
Born in the east
Treguard2026-01-21 08:03
It also parallels very well with Kaidou from the arc right before. They went through very similar treatment and had similar backgrounds and both wound up as 2 of the strongest in the world, but Kaidou (mostly) abandoned all of his faith in Nika, deciding that he would become SO terrible that either ONLY NIKA could stop him, or nothing would and he would destroy a world not worth saving.
Hari140320012026-01-21 13:20
Not really, there were logical issues in his backstory even if the emotional beats were good.
Kuma didn't really have any incentive to give himself up after he saw Bonney at Sabaody or possibly heard about her being a Worst Gen pirate even before that. She was a pirate with a bounty, and she wasn't under watch.
He was still of sound mind, and he had the opportunity to escape with Bonney. The best person to keep her safe was himself too, with his devil fruit and all.
It's not like he was overly honorable either, he was willing to do anything for his daughter, even evil things. Breaking a promise to Vegapunk shouldn't be a big deal for him.
Zeta422026-01-21 16:26
Sadly, this seems to be a recurring thing in One Piece flashbacks: characters who are paragons of honesty and would sooner kill themselves than break a promise, even to a bad guy. Oden, Vegapunk, Kuma, Harald. Can't wait for Joyboy to screw up and doom the Ancient Kingdom, too.
Hari140320012026-01-21 16:41
I honestly don't understand the downvotes when I was just putting forward facts. The logical issues took me out of it a lot even if the emotional beats were good. It was an avoidable situation AND was pretty in-character for Kuma to take advantage of - he just didn't for plot purposes, there is no better excuse.
No wonder One Piece fandom is not looked at fondly, they can't even take valid objective criticism.
Tonhuz2026-01-21 03:11
Noooo! It is still too soon, I'm not over it.😭😭😭
uralt2026-01-21 03:11
I have no context since I'm not up to date with One Piece but the collars look like they could be removed just by lifting them. Is it on purpose?
Waylornic2026-01-21 03:26
This is a “he hit the same rib twice and it made two different sounds”-ass comment.
HuxleysHero2026-01-21 03:29
I think its just the drawing style, but realistically, you take the collar off and then what? You ain't gettin' far in Mary Geoise as an escaped prisoner/slave.
uralt2026-01-21 09:56
Yeah that's probably the context I'm missing. It looked like they were on a regular sidewalk (I don't know what Mary Geoise is). Though apparently even by staying put you just get shot, haha.
ExL-Oblique2026-01-22 05:21
It's a form of psychological slavery where you're here "by choice" because you keep this collar around your neck (even though you know you'll get shot the moment you take it off)
uralt2026-01-22 05:58
My only knowledge is from the clip, he got shot without taking it off, so it just depends on the whims of the guards in this situation.
BobIsBest4342026-01-21 04:06
Some other collars in the series detonate when taken off, so these may be like that.
Also, there isn’t anywhere to flee even if you do take them off.
kaiser_kerfluffy2026-01-26 06:56
All the celestial dragon slave collars blow up
Fick_58352026-01-21 06:19
That’s all I could think the whole time, just slip them off and leave…
BobIsBest4342026-01-21 15:17
They would get shot dead.
(Or explode)
translucentsphere2026-01-21 13:14
Looks more difficult to keep it on your neck than take it off. The moment these characters bow down it will probably fall off their neck.
improbable_humanoid2026-01-21 03:50
The Kuma's memories arc is probably the GOAT of One Piece anime arcs.
gvon892026-01-21 03:56
BRUH WHY YOU GOTTA POST THIS, LITERALLY THE THE WORST DEATH IN ONE PIECE
Environmental_Guava42026-01-22 03:40
it had a spoiler tag... Opening those always carries some risks.
Aggressive-Check-1012026-01-21 04:04
And apparently "Some" people hate this Backstory 😒
FunnyStructure15252026-01-21 18:10
I don't really get why they'd hate on it tbh. It had a decent enough pace to setup Bonney in the next episodes.
bondsmatthew2026-01-22 05:41
There were loads of people on piratefolk who were bashing and making fun of people for crying at this backstory
EySoyCoco2026-01-21 05:56
Don da ta ta Don da ta ta
ShortLeather89672026-01-21 06:12
Wait until the God Valley Incident. Kuma was the undisputed MVP there.
Fick_58352026-01-21 06:18
They can just skip the collars over their head and leave…..
HARPU72026-01-21 08:07
Lol, just realized how large the design flaw is, also why y'all downvoting
mazgill2026-01-21 08:55
Tbh it makes the collars even more impactful, they are not tied by physical restraints, they are bound by mental restraints as they know they have no chance at escaping alive. What you gonna do, pop wings and fly out? What will happen to your comrades as a punishment? What if other prisoners will rat you out to not get punished?
Zeta422026-01-21 16:22
Then in the next episode Kuma meets Ivankov who has the balls to rebel.
kaiser_kerfluffy2026-01-26 06:56
They blow up
Due_Personality_60312026-01-21 06:37
Kuma was given the saddest backstory in one piece. Robbin's story was sad but Kuma had had one seriously bad thing happen one after the other. It makes you hate yourself for hating him earlier in the series when he was messing with the straw hat crew.
ILoseNothingButTime2026-01-21 06:55
Get cucked cuckaneer.
Adrsilva13562026-01-21 07:37
Kurma is The GOAT!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
baseballlover7232026-01-21 09:55
Please don't unspoiler the post. We marked it as a spoiler for a reason.
shangriLaaaaaaa2026-01-21 10:36
chain looks bigger than their head are they stupid to not remove it
ExL-Oblique2026-01-22 05:18
It's a form of psychological torture. The chains don't even bind them but they know if they take it off they're dead. And because they "can" take it off, it's a vehicle of gaslighting to convince them they're enslaved by choice or deserve this in some way.
dungfeeder2026-01-21 12:59
I will never understand how people like this art style.
