Is it still worth watching Haruhi Suzumiya?
This show came out almost 20 years ago and seems to have been incredibly popular yet I almost hear NOTHING about it anymore.
I've heard about it before but due to my age I've only really thought about getting into it recently.
That being said, I feel to some extent If I start watching it I will miss out on a lot of the cultural relevance which made it feel so popular at the time and maybe it will just be a waste of time.
Im sure its a great anime and movie but It just feels like something where theres not really any point getting into it anymore because the best of it was in the past.
Like If I watch it I will be a newgen fan in a community that is primarily old and hasnt had much relevance in years.
Im still open to changing my mind about it though.

There's a reason for it though, so it's still worth watching.
It would have been a far better (and more authentic) experience if that person hadn't spoiled it though.
Totally still worth watching!
Just because people are not actively talking about a 20yo show on the daily somehow you concluded that it is not worth getting into because... reasons?
Why do you care if there is discussion or how old the fans are? Watch it and see if you like it. Good writing doesn't age. It is as good as it was 20 years ago.
Not sure if there are many finished shows that get a lot more attention either from this time period.
I dont think there is anything contrarian about watching a show and not instantly jumping on reddit or Twitter to talk about it. I dont know a single person who does that tbh.
You know what. I'm just going to say watch anything Kyoto Animation. It's always worth it for how well they make their shows.
Always having dual language lyrics for OP/ED. I know this all exists still in places. It's fueled by nostalgia, but fansubs and scantalations were something fun.
I think I watched Lucky Star with AFK subs back then.
You get these weird things where or they're made with a translation app,or they have sidenotes from the author making jokes that have nothing to do with the vibe o the scene.
No color difference making it hard to understand who's saying what, overlapping subs between talk/translation of stuff on the background, broken code showing weird stuff..
I miss the quality from 10+ years ago.
I know a good bit of Japanese, too - and it's jarring how things are subbed sometimes. I've seen 8nstances of plain wrong, nonsensical translation.
If possible, I'll go out of my way to find fansubs. Official translation is just so ass most of the time.. and I don't like how honorifics like san, Sama, Chan etc aren't kept anymore. They don't really translate well, but often add a good amount of nuance into the writing.
But personally I think that it is worth watching in a chronological order. Broadcast order was used for season 1 and season 1 only.
Everybody loves Raymond came out in the late 90s. It is still as good? Yes
Same goes for anime, or any show, if you like it, then yes it's good, regardless of year
Why are fandoms so important to you? I personally couldn't care less about what other people think about what I enjoy.
But time has passed. A lot of time. Many fans from that generation stopped watching anime, some of us still watch anime and remember it fondly. But today's young people are busy watching newer series.
Not to mention the stumble the series suffered, which practically ruined it.
I think Suzumiya Haruhi is still worth watching; it was an unusual product for its time, and at least the first season and the movie have aged well. There's a possibility of a new season, nothing confirmed, but there are some signs, now that 2026 will be the 20th anniversary.
And what about the second season?
Kyon-kun denwa...
It's been in my top favorites for years and I watched it for the first time in 2019, which, yeah, is seven years ago now, but still 13 years after it was initially released with less visible buzz and fanfare surrounding it then too compared to closer to when it aired.
And experiencing it in a slightly different "cultural context" by a time delay had no bearing on my enjoyment of it. Similarly, if I watch a well-written and impressive, interesting series from the 1980s or 70s or any other time, my own experience with it is independent of its legacy and the extent of popular recognition and revisiting of it now.
But you have to ask yourself: Are you watching this or any other series primarily for yourself or trying to get into it due to seeking some social aspect and more interactive experience out of it?
> Im sure its a great anime and movie but It just feels like something where theres not really any point getting into it anymore because the best of it was in the past.
Absolute and complete nonsense. I'm stunned that anyone would make such a remark.
I think you're worrying far too much about the culture as well as the age of it and the social aspects of discussing something that you've not seen before. Just watch it and enjoy it, and if you want to have a chat about it then make a few posts in the Haruhi subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Haruhi/
I only watched it for the first time about two or so years ago and didn't have any problems with it then, so there's no good reason why you should either.
Finally, remember this: great writing never ages.
