For reference, Kimi No Na Wa "Your Name" took in about $1.6M on its opening weekend.
Captain_Kuhl2026-01-21 17:27
Wasn't that one advertised, though? I haven't seen any marketing for this past the first trailer, and no theaters anywhere near me are offering it. I remember Your Name having a pretty decent amount of hype and availability.
IceBlue2026-01-21 17:36
I’ve seen more ads for All You Need is Kill than I ever saw for your name. Your name was also only there for a day or two. This is a weeklong release if not longer. Every major theater near me has it. Your Name was only shown at one theater near me that does arthouse type films and foreign films.
Captain_Kuhl2026-01-21 19:03
Only theater I could feasibly visit has a single showing at 4:45 (so if I left work and gunned it, I'd still be late). Probably just a regional thing, because there's nothing here. Your Name also had over half a year between the original and US releases, so even without advertising, anime fans would have still known about the movie and how good it was for a good long while.
WhiteBoxResearch2026-01-22 01:42
Not very effectively. That was prior to when Funimation was part of the Sony machine, and they didn't have as large a network of email marketing / paid / social media as GKIDS/TOHO has now.
That said, Your Name was a sensation in the anime community by the time it came out. Because it was so much after Japan's release, it had already been watched millions of times in the US alone via piracy, so there was a big fandom there ready to watch. (in fairness, this was a mixed blessing and I think it would've at least doubled its box office if it came out prior to the BD because word-of-mouth in the community for this being "THE movie" was so strong)
But All You Need is Kill opened in 768 theaters, more than double the peak for Your Name. We have a much more mature market for anime films in the US these days, and the outlets managing most releases like GKIDS and CR/Sony are well adapted to it.
Kougeru-Sama2026-01-21 20:22
That was also 10 years ago when movie tickets were 1/3 as expensive as they are now. Not to mention inflation
Katlima2026-01-22 08:04
> Not to mention inflation
I'm a bit confused. Isn't mentioning inflation exactly what you're doing?
Tehbeefer2026-01-22 18:35
How many screens? That has a huge impact on box office receipts.
edit: [looks like](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/release/rl788563457/weekend/?ref_=bo_rl_tab#tabs) apples-to-apples, that number'd be 1.8M USD over 311 theaters
daddyjohns2026-01-22 18:41
all the wiki said was "select" theaters
Gamerguy2302026-01-21 16:55
Decent movie. Agree with some of complaints people had with it. Do think live action does better job on many things. I’d still recommend you see it if you’re a fan of that kind of animation. The fight scenes were good.
PsychicAC2026-01-21 16:58
How was the story? My main reason for not seeing it was none of the trailers making me confident in them once again changing Keiji out for a different protagonist.
Gamerguy2302026-01-21 17:03
Rita is main character in this. Story is bit meh. There’s good parts and slow parts. They do bad job at using any supporting characters unlike live adaptation. I do think this version of story is more realistic to how this repeating every day would play out imo.
PsychicAC2026-01-21 17:42
Hmm...yeah Rita being the MC is kinda...antithetical to the actual book? I didn't like the whitewashing in Edge of Tomorrow but at least that was trying to be mostly faithful. Sucks because this is now the 2nd film that still won't let Keiji play out his actual story as the leading man.
Gamerguy2302026-01-21 18:05
I have not read the book but some of the reviews/comments I’ve seen about this movie says they do have I think some more faithful stuff with him in regards to more of the final battle of the movie. I don’t know if they swapped it with the characters or what but one of the posters for this movie I believe shows what I’m talking about to give you an idea.
whoisfriend2026-01-21 18:23
I was expecting this to be closer to the book, but it isn't at all. The way the aliens work is closer to the book, but beyond that it's an entirely different take.
\[AYNIK\] >!In this verision, the Darol lands on Earth and is dormant. A group of people are research and mining it. Rita is one of the miners. It starts with Rita getting the loop power, and a bit later she meets Keiji, who has been augmenting her suit to get stronger. Keiji gets the loop at the same time as Rita.!<
Not a bad version, but definitely different.
Gamerguy2302026-01-21 18:50
I do think how the loop works in this one is a unique take. I have no clue if that’s how the book does it though.
whoisfriend2026-01-22 16:32
It's closer to the book than EoT was at least. In some ways it combines the LN and EoT together.
\[AYNIK Book and Movie\]>!The movie more or less keeps the antenna and broadcaster idea from the book. In the book, all of the antennas but one need to be killed before time returns to normal. In the anime, all the antennas (Rita, Keiji, and a Darol) reset at the same time when one of them are killed. As Rita and Keiji loop, they become stronger conduits for the main Darol, with the goal of one of them taking enough energy to cause a catastrophic event (I think. This was where the movie lost me a bit.). On their last loop, Keiji takes the energy into himself and Rita kills him. Then, similar to EoT, the time resets to the start of the day again, but the Darol is dead, so Keiji is still alive, albeit without his memories.!<
Overall I still liked this take. Rita and Keiji are pretty likable and the animation has a great style (sasuga Studio 4C).
PsychicAC2026-01-22 17:46
Wow...yeah...that doesn't really sound fun at all. Like Edge of Tomorrow I'm almost more willing to forgive with its try hard happy ending because they weren't really trying to adapt the novel faithfully.
This is like if someone tried to adapt it but saw the tragedy and loss that is so important to the ending and basically "nah fuck that let's just ignore the message of the whole book and write a happy ending".
Yikes, I like 4C (Berserk films aside) I always thought their Detroit Metal City anime was one of the best anime adaptations ever with how faithful it was. This is...not that...
whoisfriend2026-01-22 17:57
Totally. I'm okay with different takes and adaptations on an idea, but it would be nice to have a faithful take on the LN before getting to alternate versions. I found the ending of the novel to be very poignant and I think it whenever I drink a coffee. Maybe one day.
PsychicAC2026-01-21 20:37
Yeah I'll pass, that's just a completely different story at that point.
Stabaobs2026-01-22 13:39
Dang, I thought it looked like it was going to be the original story from Rita's POV from the trailer.
MaskOfIce422026-01-21 19:18
Yeah, I did like it and am glad I saw it, wouldn't even object to seeing it again. But it's also not anything that special. I do enjoy the animation and the world design and I'm almost always going to be kinder to time travel stories just because I like that sort of thing, but it's not one I'd go out of my way for.
animepig2026-01-21 17:29
What stopped me was I read the manga and saw Edge of Tomorrow, so I didn't feel super inclined to see this story again. But the art style looked amazing though.
Local_Pickle_47172026-01-21 17:32
Yeah, I'm not in any rush having read it as a manga, a novel, and then seen the Hollywood adaptation. I'll check it out when it becomes more available.
chewywheat2026-01-22 00:25
Kind of the thing here is we got three versions of the original novel (movie, manga, and anime movie) and all of them different in their own way.
IMO the manga is the most accurate in terms of story whereas I liked the monster and mech design from the Hollywood movie out of all the visual medias.
Unlucky-Fold-56842026-01-21 17:35
lol, i didn't even know it was out already. I only watched adaptation with Tom Cruise. How the anime overall?
haganbmj2026-01-21 17:45
Nothing special unfortunately. It falls way short on story and characters. The main two have like zero chemistry.
The visuals are serviceable, but a lot of it is light pastel color on light pastel - it really could have used some contrast. Again nothing special, I'd much rather watch Tekkon Kinkreet which uses a similar art style to way better effect.
AppleDemolisher562026-01-22 06:53
That sucks, I had high hopes for it
haganbmj2026-01-22 16:19
I haven't read the original, but it's a premise with enough potential that I was hoping that another adaptation could make something interesting out of it.
Zoradesu2026-01-21 18:12
Animation and direction was really good. The story and characters fell flat. Even with its issues, I much prefer Edge of Tomorrow over this adaptation overall.
gravityabuser2026-01-21 23:04
One of the rare circumstances were the Hollywood liveaction adaption does better than the anime.
edm4un2026-01-21 19:27
I thought it was fine, saying the characters didn’t have chemistry makes me laugh, the whole point was that they were both very different but came together in the end. Both this and edge of tomorrow were good.
shockwave12112026-01-21 19:30
saw it yesterday, it was just alright, i hate to say it but i enjoyed the live action more, the manga is still the best though
tripleaamin2026-01-21 19:56
I enjoyed it. But I do admit it didn’t really felt like a theater experience added much to it.
Kougeru-Sama2026-01-21 20:21
Didn't even know it was out
Agreeable_Store_38962026-01-21 20:28
This has to be the property with the most amount of adaptations I've seen, that are all somehow on a scale of 'somewhat' to 'totally' different from the source material they're adapting lol. Like it's wild to have a light novel, a manga, a graphic novel, a live action movie and an animated movie and have each be different but the same.
Tehbeefer2026-01-22 18:45
That's a good thing!
porpoiseoflife2026-01-21 21:06
I was fairly generous with my 7/10 rating for the film. It had the entertainment factor as well as the story beats down pat. The timeframe during the day's events was a lot confusing, and I kept wondering how the hell Keiji had time to complete his increasingly complex modifications like that every single loop. The characters were the downside, as neither of the mains had any charisma on their own nor chemistry with each other.
I had a lot of issues with Ai Mikami in the lead role as well. According to MAL, this is her only credit. And it shows. Her attempts to laugh spontaneously were enough to take me completely out of the scene. Her disaster of a crying scene was pathetic, sounding closer to someone literally saying "boo-hoo-hoo" than attempting to make the appropriate sound. There was no personality behind her work, and definitely no attempt at creating one. Worse, they had HanaKana in a supporting role, and her doing five minutes of screentime overshadowed the rest of the performances.
ArturiaPendragonFace2026-01-21 21:07
Still waiting for UK airing date... Some time this January it seems.
Macs_Riffs2026-01-21 22:00
I'm one of the ones that paid for it in theaters..and regretted it. My gf was like 'why is the MC such a bitch?' lol
I had high hopes, as I'm a big fan of Edge of Tomorrow, but the live action is so much better than this. The animation is beautiful and colorful, but that's about all I can say about this one.
TichoSlicer2026-01-21 22:14
people are really braindead nowadays...
Delisches2026-01-21 22:25
Can someone tell me is the story a "prequel", the original story from her pov or something entirely new?
HikkingOutpit2026-01-22 02:12
Nope. It's completely new version of the original story, not a prequel or sequel. Basically like what Mirror's Edge Catalyst was to the original Mirror's Edge.
Top_Result_15502026-01-21 22:40
It flopped because of wonky art style
Knuckleheaded-beardo2026-01-22 05:54
There's other and more valid reasons why it bombed but that art style was doing no favors either.
haganbmj2026-01-22 16:16
I happen to quite like the art style, I just didn't think they did anything interesting with it. There are some decent key frames here and there and some of the dream sequences were fun, but in general the animation didn't really leave an impression on me.
FreedomDlVE2026-01-21 22:51
didnt even know about this adaptation but judging from the viewer reactions and trailer, this reeks after warner brothers grabbing whatever anime IP they could get on hand and pouring some DEI over it.
Why change the MC to rita? why choose such an "unique" (read as ugly) artstyle as if to avoid even a smidge of sexualization? I wouldnt be surprised if Anita Sarkeesian herself directed this movie.
yikes.
SupperTime2026-01-22 00:03
Sad
UMP45isnotflat2026-01-22 12:41
From what I have gathered its all around a trainwreck, the artstyle is what it is, certainly not winning mass appeal. The story seems to actually be worse than the live action adaption, which feels odd to say. For such a big title this feels very undercooked. I dont even want to watch it anymore.
Tehbeefer2026-01-22 18:42
420k USD from 768 theaters in USA, or ~550/theater
