My Thoughts on My Hero Academia Season 7
Continuing on with the amazing seasons of My Hero Academia. If I were to be specific I'd say it's slightly worse than Season 6, but only ever so slightly. It's still fantastic. The best part was when Todoroki fought Dabi. It was a direct continuation of Endeavor's encounter with Dabi in the last season. Todoroki was the perfect person to fight him, because Endeavor had too much guilt becuase of what his actions did to Dabi, and while Shoto was sad, he didn't have as much emotional connection as Endeavor did because he was super young when Toya disappeared, and thus is able to be more openly critical over his actions. During the fight he basically admits that their father was a monster and their family was a mess, but Dabi was the only one who burned people as a result. That's actually really powerful. It reminds me of the true crime podcasts I like listening to, and there's so many examples where the killer has a horrible childhood, and they often start by killing the person or people that a bused them as a kid, which doesn't ellicit any emotional response out of me outside of maybe joy, but then they take it too far and start killing innocent people that had nothing to do with it. Even if you disagree with Stain's actions, you have to admit that he's better because he only attacks heores, not innocent citizens that can't even defend themselves. On top of that he also hated Shoto just as much as Endeavor, claiming that he had an "easy life" even though he was abused just as much as him. If he would have just came after Endeavor it would have been difficult for me to blame him.
But Dabi doesn't end there as later on Endeavor encounters him again. Dabi is really messed up physically at this point, like even more so than usual, and we get an incredibly emotional scene where Endeavor apologies to everyone. To Dabi and each of his family members individually, not as a collective, including Shouta. I'm still of the mind that he can't truly be redeemed for what he did, but I'm going to reiterate that it somehow manages to be incredibly emotional despite that. It just goes to show how well written it is in my opinion. For the reasons I mentioned before Endeavor wouldn't have been able to fight Dabi earlier. Even Hawks comments that he would have gotten too emotional to successfully defeat him. This was proven when Endeavor was fighting All For One and the latter openly mocked him for the fact that he took Dabi's body so Endeavor couldn't find it. But in this scene Dabi's mostly defeated already which is the perfect time for him to say everything that he wanted to. Another standout moment in this season is Ochako's encounter with Toga. I've always found Toga to be interseting because she's one of those anime villains that makes me wonder how her life might have gone if she met Ochako and Deku earlier in life instead of the League of Villains, maybe she could have been led down a differnet path. She does manage to change Toga's mind about wanting to keep killing people, and sacrificed her own life to save Ochako, who was incredibly injured by that point.
A few other scattered thoughts. Just like the last season, I love how in this war, no character is forgotten or left out. Every character, even ones that you might have forgotten about, get at least a few seconds of fighting some villain. Also the fights themselves are great and so is the animation, like always. The best fight aside from Shouta Todoroki vs. Dabi or Ochako Uraraka vs. Himiko Toga was when several heroes, Deku, Endeavor, and a few others were fighting Shigaraki. You might say Star and Stripe fighting Shigaraki should be up there, but I was actually disappinted in that. Yeah, I'm one of them. Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect her to win, I'm not that dumb. I just thought it was stupid and pointless to introduce this brand new character, with an insanely overpowered Quirk, only for her to be killed after two episodes. I think she should have been introduced a season or two earlier, at least. It could have been much more impactful if we spent more time with her. She has a great design, I enjoy her personality although I wanted to see more of it, it was cool to see a famous hero from some place other than Japan something I kind of wish we got more often in this series, and her ability was cool and interesting if overpowered, but it seemed like the only reaosn she was created was to instantly be defeated and show how strong Shigaraki was, and show us the internals of his mind and how he's struggling with All For One for control over his body. I don't think the author really succeeded with that first one because we've already seen how overpowered he is and I don't think this fight increased our perception of that any more, but he did succeed with that second one.
