[Love is War] Does anyone else feel like Kaguya-sama lost its magic after Season 2?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I wanted to see if anyone else feels the same way. I loved the first two seasons of Kaguya-sama. The whole concept of "Love is War" was perfect. Then the show kind of forgot what made it special.
The "War" stopped happening by Season 3, and the mind games basically disappeared. It stopped being a parody and just turned into a standard romance anime. The big finale with the balloons looked great, but it wasn't a clever trap or a strategy anymore.
The movie felt like a step backward. We finally get this big payoff in Season 3, and then immediately Kaguya reverts to her "Ice" persona? It felt like the story was stalling. Instead of moving forward, we had to sit through a long, confusing trial inside her head.
The vibe changed too much and the pacing got weird in the movie, and the characters started feeling a bit one dimensional. But the biggest loss was the Narrator. In the early seasons, the Narrator made everything hilarious by treating their small problems like a world war. When the show got serious, the Narrator went quiet.
I don't hate the newer stuff, but I really miss when the show was about two stubborn people trying to force the other one to confess. It feels like it turned into the exact type of drama it used to make fun of.
Does anyone else feel like the shift to serious drama hurt the show?

And the "war" doesn't stop? It literally reaches its climax in season 3 and the following movie.
not caring about whether or not if follows its tropes or anything, it's one of the most enjoyable and entertaining pieces of media out there, especially season 3 in my opinion.
though i will be curious to hear if any criticism of yours about season 3 being worse than the former because nearly everyone that has watched this thing appreciates season 3 the most of all.
I also was not that into the trial inside Kaguya's head, I love My Life as a Villainess and spider isekai so I'm not morally opposed to chibi characters inside of people's head as a concept but when it's used to reach a serious conclusion it seems lazy.
also an unpopular opinion, the narrator i think is overrated by having a great voice actor (esp in the dub) but I do appreciate that it knows when it's needed. I think the comedy, while an essential part of what made the series appealing knows when to take a backseat when things had to get serious.
i think you have a point that the movie reset Kaguya's development a bit, but that payoff really was worth it. They now have a much stronger foundation/basis for their relationship where they aren't just trying to one up each other but they can accept each other from a point of weakness. I think you missed that.
Season 3 was very good.
l have no regrets.
