Looking for Shojo, Romance, Mystery, historical, and Supernatural anime.

I've been watching anime for decades and I'm currently running out of stuff to watch. I love historical romance set in palaces or ancient lands, supernatural fantasy romance with demons, Ayakashi, yokai, fairies, etc. I also love romance with magic, adventure, and world building. I like funny action romance too Like Ranma 1/2 and Dan da Dan. Some anime I love are Inuyasha, Kamisama Kiss, Kakuriyo bed and breakfast for Spirits, Ancient Magus Bride, Apothecary Diaries, The world is still beautiful, Saiunkoko Monogatari, Visions of Escaflowne, Gosick, Noragami, and Fushigi Yuugi. Some anime I like are Spice and Wolf, Snow White with Red Hair, My Happy Marriage, and In Spectre. Some anime I did not like or wasn't my cup of tea are How Raeliana ended up at the dukes Mansion, Can I Ask for one final thing, Maid sama, Fruits basket, Rent a girlfriend, My dress up darling, im the villainess, etc. I'd love to find a hidden gem or something different aside from the usual romances that get recommended. It's always the same things.

It is more shounen than shoujo, but 12 Kingdoms is an absolutely astounding adventure story in a fictional world very heavily based on ancient China. Female MC, but there is no room in the story for romance or a harem. I would say it is like FY, but much more serious, without the harem, and without Miaka being Miaka. (but does have the friend turned enemy) There are PLENTY of youkai.

Fair warning, the MC is not supposed to be likable at the start. She's very likable at the end, unlike Miaka, who is very stranglable.

edit: it has such an insane level of world building you will need either a guide from the novel translators or an advanced HS / college education in Japan to follow it all like a native.

Omg I started watching 12 kingdoms but have to get back to it cause I didn't finish it. I really did enjoy it. And yes Miaka was such a pain and Yui too. They drove me crazy 🤣😂

12 kingdoms was based on a novel published in a novel imprint targeting teen girls called “Kodansha X white heart”, so it’s got a pretty strong Josei-muke pedigree. That, and the same author also creates the Shojo ghost hunt and published pretty prolifically in Shojo novel imprints.

I love stories like that as well, unfortunately you already listed the majority I would recommend. But here's some others

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (highly recommend if you liked Gosick and In/Spectre, I watched this specifically because I enjoyed those 2)

Zenshu (an Isekai with a female lead. But before you tune out, it's not at all like standard Isekai, it's more akin to Escaflowne. It's fairly unique and tells imo a good self contained story about, well, stories and endings to said story, be it bad, good or bittersweet. As well as fanfic and the death of the author)

The Saints magic is omnipotent (also an Isekai, female lead. Idk, I just vibed with the story and the couple)

Rascal doesn't dream of a bunny girl senpai (sounds fanservicy, but isn't at all. Focus instead on the drama and supernatural. One of the best written anime couples)

Omg these are some awesome recommendations thank you. Dusk maiden and Zenshu sounds really good. I think the Saints Magic power might be the one I watch first. The others seem good but also a bit sad.

Based on what you like, you might enjoy Yona of the Dawn (historical romance + politics + growth), Mononoke (supernatural, mystery, very different vibe), or Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (beautiful worldbuilding, mature tone). If you want something more obscure, Ghost Hunt might also be worth checking out.

Hell girl is quite dark and it’s not really a romance, though there is a tragic romantic backstory to the story revealed slowly throughout. Also some hints of chemistry though nothing explicitly stated in the story’s current timeline.

I think Hyouka is one of the best solving mysteries show I’ve ever seen. It’s at least pretty up there, even if it doesn’t get brought up much these days.

In the surface it looks pretty plain, but i think it’s has some great mystery scenarios written
