So if you want a cute, funny, mostly drama free romcom with a fun cast, check it out.
I'm in the final country before going back to the UK tomorrow and I have found merch in all 4 countries. Liko and Roy are just as big abroad as they are in the UK, fully integrated into everyday life. I also saw Mitsuha Yamano in a Fnac in Belgium which was unexpected and pleasant :)
Yesterday I also got to visit Elbewalde and even as someone who isn't overly keen on Apothecary Diaries I do like Maomao so I bought their custom Maomao shirt.
I've obviously explored the cities I've visited too and they're very nice but it's been a great few hunts around shops too
What I didn't realize is that it's absolutely ***hilarious!*** The budding romance is solid stuff too, but man, just as a comedy it's amazing.
That got me thinking about just how important the production quality and especially direction is for a comedy anime. None of the jokes have been particularly clever or innovative -- I'm not saying they're bad, by no means, the writing is really solid; but it's all fairly standard gag anime stuff. It's just that the execution is so impeccable, both in terms of animation and acting, and just the comedic timing is amazing.
Compare it to, say, Witch Watch last year. I thought that show was one where the writing was constantly way funnier than how the end result turned out. So often I thought the underlying jokes were great, but the timing was somehow always off, and the animation never managed to go quite hard enough for the craziness it was supposed to convey. I thought with better execution it could have been Kaguya-sama levels of funny, but now it turned out a 7/10, pretty good, but not remarkable either.
Under Ninja had some very good direction that made the most of a limited situation.
I ask this 'cause I think themes and topics similar to the ones touched in NHK are rarely fully on display on their own, and in most cases tend to be blended in as metaphors in certain scenarios (mostly sci-fi) that move away from the very (and almost unconventional) down-to-earth approach of Welcome to the NHK.
I have all the anime I've watched listed on MAL.
https://myanimelist.net/animelist/Highlander08?status=7
Man, I get you.
Your list is privated so I can't see it, but from your favourites and what we discussed, I'd say you could give *The Tatami Galaxy* a try.
On the more complicated and sci-fi side, *Serial Experiments Lain* is also a great show that's become unnervingly more relevant as time went on. *Paranoia Agent* is also probably a decent pick, but I would recommend anything from Satoshi Kon to cover a whole spectrum of themes, from self-identity to questioning life choices, from parasocial anxiety to social issues.
If you want to try something a bit out there in terms of fantasy/sci-fi, but with a lot to say about human relationships and the structure of society, I'd also add *Shinsekai Yori* there. It a slow burn but the atmosphere is immaculate and the final payoff amazing.
Thank you for all of your responses though 😊

It does annoy me to see it as an ONA as I view it as putting Death Note (2017) (this was live action one with Willem Dafoe; not the Japanese live-action ones) in Netflix original programming [**(or original stand-up comedy specials)**](#getout) when it's clearly a Netflix original film.
These databases tend to have rules that say one location and advance screenings don't count but there's an exception: [Gikkuk's short film](https://myanimelist.net/anime/61984) [**(real name should be Bâan: The Boundary of ONA)**](#getout).
I think the ONA situation started off simple enough "anime which were released online" and early ones were OVA format style stuff including non-film one-offs, series with gaps and things not fit for TV, then it added Netflix original programming (batch releases) but where it went wrong was putting weekly releases that don't air on TV (many Donghua in China) which bloats out the section massively.
Why not Anilist? I personalty hate the interface but if I didn't this is not grounds to promote that as it has the same Baan is movie, Kaguya is ONA situation and further bloats ONA by putting things that do air on TV under ONA (e.g. Tamon's B-Side [because U-Next & animehodai has it before TV broadcast](https://tamon-anime.com/onair/), as does CR & B-Global) but some say it's better because you can filter out Dongha.
Would like to make a post but I can't until 10 comment karma so I'll just do it here
My top 3 I can think of right now
1.)
"Seeping crest of turbidity.
Arrogant vessel of lunacy!
Boil forth and deny, grow numb and flicker, disrupting sleep!
The crawling princess of iron!
The eternally self-destructing doll of mud!
Unite! Repel!
Fill the earth and know your own powerlessness!
Hadō #90: Black Coffin!"
2.)
"I am the bone of my sword.
Steel is my body and fire is my blood.
I have created over a thousand blades.
Unknown to Death,
Nor known to Life.
Have withstood pain to create many weapons.
Yet, those hands will never hold anything.
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works."
3.)
"The nine mountains and eight seas constitute one world!
A thousand of them form a small chiliocosm!
And when I gather and cube that chiliocosm, there is nothing I cannot cut!
Three Sword Style Secret Technique: The Billion-fold World Trichiliocosm!"
- "Clustering wishes will become a new shining star! Become the path its light shines upon! Synchro Summon! Take flight, Stardust Dragon!"
- "The ruler's heartbeats will now file through here! Bear witness to its creation-shaking power! Synchro Summon! My very soul, Red Demon's Dragon!"
- "Chilling flames engulf the entire world. Pitch-dark flower, set into bloom! Synchro Summon! Appear now, Black Rose Dragon!"
Dunno if that spiel and its variants count as an incantation, but it totally should in my book
Pretty much takes the crown.
(But I really like it!)
Edit: One down.
But since you're this close to the end might as well see for yourself [](#mugiwait)

[](#cooresto)
I know you're just saying that so I catch up to S1 to watch it..
[](#elsieqq)

Also kinda funny how last week we got the most confusing snoozefest of an episode and this week we got the complete opposite with the most bombastic cinema possible. Probably my favorite episode of the show, goddamn.
[](#bigthink)
IDK, while this is literally true (21 at CGP vs. 26 at SS, less from each of you take away short MVs, CMs, and stuff), they don't seem comparable to me. For one, about a full quarter of CyGames Pictures works are various Uma Musume seasons, while Science Saru is much more split between different original properties without much overlap. Science Saru has also just been around longer, and has had time to establish a vision and to form relationships with specific creators (Yuasa, Yamada, etc.). CyGames Pictures doesn't have much of an identity to me beyond "makes good and interesting stuff," and that may be because of both not being around that long and dedicating many resources to a single media property without being defined by that property.
Regardless, I definitely have an eye out now, which I never would have expected given the circumstances. I'm really excited to see how they develop.
Cygames themselves did only one proper Umamusume season (Cinderella Gray). Other than that they did Road to the Top which was a four episode ONA and the movie.
Anyone who didnt say this the moment Priconne S2 dropped deserves a [punch](#punch)
[](#bigthink 'i assume its the last or second to last episode, but every episode in season 2 goes extremely hard so i wont stand for this slander')
I really wonder if they can keep the generational run for the whole decade, their Summer 26 lineup is already looking *very* promising in both TV and film formats and who knows what else they're cooking ~~aside from the totes-still-a-secret Kagurabachi and the inevitability of more Cinderella Gray~~
Thus you get this (perhaps a little overly verbose) description of anime filler:
> Because the *One Piece* manga is still ongoing, Toei Animation uses non-manga material (filler) as a way to slow down the progression of the plot. If the anime were to catch up to the manga, Toei would either have to wait for Oda to release more manga chapters, take the story in a direction independent of the manga (as was done in *Rurouni Kenshin, Elfen Lied, InuYasha*, and *Fullmetal Alchemist*), or simply end it; any of these would likely damage the popularity of the series, and would not reflect well on either Toei Animation or Oda. Thus, additional material is the only viable alternative.
> Unlike non-manga material in many other shows, most *One Piece* filler takes place in story arcs independent from the main plot and having little to no effect on the subsequent canon story…
I can’t pinpoint what it is that I find so amusing about the way this is phrased, but it might just be that it’s aimed at newbies that at this point are probably younger than the shows they use as examples.
Side note, the Oda glazing is real weird. My interactions with a lot of the more hardcore fans I know always come off like they worship Oda as some god and his story can do no wrong. It’s something I feel I don’t see as much in other fandoms, and I’m still unsure why besides OP’s length.
As for why author glazing is especially prominent in One Piece, I feel like that's simply because of the story's consistent quality. That doesn't mean it's perfect or flawless, but he does an excellent job of drawing readers into his world without giving them any significant reason to be upset at anything, unless they already reject the bulk of story in the first place.
Nothing should surprise anyone based on what I've been talking up or down here, but it is amusing to see a top three of Ikoku Nikki, Tamon's B-Side, and Golden Kamuy. Inside me are three wolves, lol.
The junk food watches are great this season, too. Kpop vampire school? Low-budget, high-drama reverse harem? Fujobait workplace slice of life about torturers? A prince named Aquasteed? Sign me up!
Additionally, I finally watched the Watanare special last night, and had a great time. Kaho was a delight, and getting the Queentet back together was fun. I know the [Watanare] >!harem ending!< is controversial, but my only complaint is that [the ending] >!involved Ajisai and Mai, instead of the vastly more interesting Kaho and Satsuki,!< but you can't get everything you want. Fun show, hope we get more high energy, slutty yuri in the future.
Also, Fire Force is good. Its only major fault is the horrendously timed lucky lecher fanservice, and there isn't that much of it. It's a nicely produced battle shounen.
I'm still bitter about the godawful one from the second-to-last episode of season 2.
[](#frustration)
As a ecchi enjoyer I obviously didn't mind it *in general*, but having it during that scene was such a baffling decision.
Like, do you want the readers/watchers to be sad, horny, confused? Pick one!
I never watched the movie (I don't even know what it's about to be honest, other than this scene) but I've seen this quote a million times!
About TortureDudes: I honestly don't get why this show isn't more popular;
I was talking about this in a previous thread, but it's definitely NOT 'made for me' (bunch of dudes, slice-of-lifey, etc..) yet I still like it a lot, it's just fun. So it surprises me that people who are closer to the intended demographic, aren't more into this.
The criticism I've seen hinges on the torture element not being over the top enough. It's pretty much just a cozy slice of life about guys at work, and I think people expected or wanted a comedy given the provocative premise. It also doesn't help that it's barely animated, and it's on the busiest day of the week. None of that is a problem for me, but I get it.
I dropped it immediately. The exposition internal monologues were grating and peak "tell don't show." The central conflict with the truant wasn't very interesting from the first episode; I was prepared to see Chitose brow-beat him with "life is great" messaging and the thought of that made me sick. The harem didn't really grab me either. The show started and it was just... there. There was no hint of intrigue to it. "I'm in love with Chitose!" "I'm in love with Chitose!" "It's so hard being Chitose, someone will be sad he didn't pick them." There was that conversation at the water's edge with the one heroine, and that was some 14-so-deep stuff, not a plot hook.
Idk. I like Toradora, and everyone drops that because of the violence and they hate Taiga. The narrator in Kaguya drove me insane at first, but that grew on me. Did I miss out or save myself 4 hours?
Overall, it's... ok. There is some good banter, and surprisingly intelligent decisions here and there. But it definitely strives to be philosophical, and doesn't do it very well.
[](#awe)
And I thought Ne Zha 2 being not included in the shortlist due to ineptitude of the English licensors was that bad...
The placement I have for Ikoku Nikki is why I was dragging my feet on sharing this for nearly a week... [](#kumikolook) Seeing all the praise for it on here for the past few weeks has me honestly frustrated with myself for not liking it more. It's not that I think it's bad either, something just isn't *fully* clicking with me in a way I can't put my finger on and ugh. I'm the girl who loves fuckin' *everything*, I *should* wholeheartedly love something I'm part of the specific target audience for and I just... don't. [](#shatteredsaten)
No work is universally beloved.

(I hope you checked out the OPs/EDs at least! I probably listened to them all for 5x more than the length of the show hah)
Season 1 came out at a time when I wasn't following a shitton of seasonals yet, and the only rewatch for the series was hosted at a time when I did not have space in my schedule for anything else.
>(I hope you checked out the OPs/EDs at least! I probably listened to them all for 5x more than the length of the show hah)
I've heard a few of them (particularly Idol and Fatal).
This season has some good ones too!
Visuals are a bit spoiler-y (they're EXCELLENT btw) but [it's the song for me! (NSFW'ish)](https://youtu.be/hQ4-H-nNNz4?list=RDhQ4-H-nNNz4)

Insane to look at JJK s1 now, where Park didn't really care about how the show looked, just how it moved, great animation but questionable choices for the visuals
Now it has so much soul there
In the perfect world, park would be the Action Director and Gosso the Director
[](#bigthink)
\*browsing reddit\* “Oh that sounds cool. I'll check out episode one right now”. \*anime starts\*
“This show has been on my watch list for 3 years. Here comes episode 1 of 165. 6 seasons. At 15 episodes a week this will be done by summer. Which is cutting it a little close since I already have two big projects planned for summer. I still need to keep up with my seasonals, so I'll be at 35 total episodes per week. guess this year will be a little slower paced than last. Which is perfect, I could use the break”.
“Hey guys I have not watched anime for a while (comically short time period) and I wanna start something new. Problem is: I've already seen all the good stuff (lists 3 battle shonen). Can someone suggest something actually PEAK? I don't watch old anime- so it needs to be something recent (nothing older than 45 seconds ago)".
**Disclaimer**: This is meant to be a lighthearted joke on the quirks of humanity. No redditor is superior or inferior to another.
**Full disclosure**: after following methodology 1 for a (rather long) while I have an extensive graveyard of shows I started, thought were pretty cool, but didn't commit to at the time. This graveyard has become an abyssal plain that is neither a ‘dropped’ list nor a ‘plan to watch’. But something else, something in between. Something powerful and scary, that you *might come across on a deep dungeon level of the next critically acclaimed isekai with an OP self insert protagonist*. Examples for posterity: ***Victory gundam, Claymore, Hunter x hunter, Kaiji***. Lying to myself that I can go back to these awesome shows anytime I want never gets old!
Don't tempt me into making Best Redditor Ranking.
[](#spooked)
iv never had the problem myself (related to anime) so id like to understand it a little more.
These are the top two reasons for me. My plan to watch lists are pretty long, and in a case like your example with a show that has 6 seasons, that could easily take me several months to watch vs finishing several shorter shows in the same amount of time, but maybe I'd enjoy the longer one more, etc. Sometimes it's also a matter of trying to figure out how many more shows I can realistically fit into my schedule before a subscription runs out.
[](#peasants)
it just now that the wide audience noticed due to the drastic difference in reactions
They are trying to 'cancel' the director like Csm s1, and I will say this right now, doesn't matter what happens from now on, every small detail will be a reason for complains, episode could be 95% perfect but the 5% will be all the talk from them
There is no going back from this type of controversy until the director is fired
That said, really doubt it will come to this, as opposed to CSM, JJK is already established, there is no need for drastic measures here
They were wrong to do that then and they are still wrong now.
[](#psh-mongrels)
I can't stress enough how that really is an awful situation for the future of anime, the companies would love to cut this human touch entirely and micromanage the projects, don't give them the excuse to do so
[](#kyonfacepalm)
Milkit might just be the #1 most boring character I've ever seen in all of anime.
I've seen some bad, poorly written or infuriating characters, but she's not even that, she's just boring.
I'm pretty sure she'd even manage to suck the joy out of a beach episode by going *m-m-master is it really okay for me to be at the beach? Is it really okay for me to be in a swimsuit? Is it really okay for me to touch sand? Really okay for me to touch the water? Really okay for me to play volleyball? Really okay for me to have a drink? Really okay for me to eat something? Really okay for me to...*
Just fucking sell her back into slavery if she's gonna spend 150 episodes asking permission before putting each foot in front of the other when she walks, what's the difference?
I imagine (hope) she's gonna stop that at some point, but yeah, I don't have the patience for it. Flum's sparse moments of edgy badassery don't nearly make up for this.
[](#seasonalpout)
Makes me a bit sad because I was super hyped for this show... Thinking it might be somewhat like Clevatess...
I think it shows how much the writing can impact a story, because while some people might think Clevatess' Alicia/Nell were similar to Flum/Milkit, to me there's a WORLD of difference; I absolutely loved Alicia and Nell (both individually, and as a pairing), but I can't stand Milkit/this pairing.
[Dropped!](#thebutton)
My growing issue with *RoaD* is actually some weakness in the performance of Flum's [VA](https://myanimelist.net/people/39727/Ayaka_Nanase) or the director's choice of how to craft the performance. I'm not too bothered by Milkit yet though, especially as she has the power of of Miku Itou behind her lol
Sorry to Bean Counter, not sorry to anything else that ended up dropped. Also, seeing 3 shows that have potential to be a rare 8 or maybe even 9 for me this early in the year is wild.

On a side note, The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-Be Wife is my biggest surprise this season. I like both Tonome and Yako, their relationship is so sweet and wholesome, and their traits bounce off each other well. The show has some good small conflicts too. Tbh I don't really care much about the other characters so far, but the main couple is enough to carry the show. The animation is somehow noticeably more lively and expressive in the latest episode compared to the previous ones.

* Ikoku Nikki good.

Game Awards wasn't that long ago and the amount of salty fanbases who could've just ignored the damn thing... I just wanted to talk about games but couldn't due to all the people raging over it.
But that's precisely why no one should expect those people to be familiar with, let alone vote for random foreign animated films, unless there's a real heavy promotional campaign to even push those films into the consciousness of the voters. Plus it's in general kinda weird to treat award shiws like some kind of a sports event where you want "your team" to win.
But yeah people get way too tribal over anything nowadays.

Wednesday
* Oshi No Ko (best OP, quality on par with first 2)

* Tamon-kun (so much fun!)
Thursday
* Prism Rondo (Jan 15 bulk)\*
* Sentenced to be a Hero\*
* Invisible Man (the sweetest)
* Holy Grail of Eris (need to catch up)
* Anyway I'm Falling in Love (sunk cost)
* Champignon Witch (liking this so far)
Friday
* Frieren (ep 1 was just greatest hits)
* Kimengumi\*
* Dark Moon\*
Sunday
* Jigokuraku (hell yeah)
* Polar Opposites (most adorable)
* Moonlit Dusk (content manga fan)
* Ikoku Nikki (need to catch up or put on hold)
* Kaya Chan\*
* Hanakimi (eh it's ok, needs more blond guy)
I also dropped Kunon and Childhood friends after just one episode each.
Edit: Fucking hell that was painful to edit on the mobile website.
Could drop that one instead of *Sentenced to be a Hero*!
I am keeping it in my PTW though and will fit it in if I can at some point. But it's just not a priority. I'm not a big shonen fantasy fan to begin with.

[](#frustration)
Of course, this is just my pre-viewing rambling. I’d gladly have the film prove me wrong when I watch it this evening. Story-wise it can easily beat Belle (2021), but topping its music is a tall order when Belle had Millennium Parade (Daiki Tsuneta, the King Gnu guy) behind it.
Things in "no rating" are ones I haven't started yet but am planning to; *Medalist* for, uh, obvious reasons, but I expect it to jump up to S tier when it begins airing; *Prism Rondo* because batch drops are hugely intimidating; *The Case Book of Arne* because a friend convinced me to give it a shot (and despite not being a romcom enjoyer he gave E1 of *You and I Are Polar Opposites* a shot at my behest, so I really think it's only fair I try one of his recs in return).
Otherwise, F tier has been dropped (which I RARELY do, I usually commit) and E tier are what would be on the chopping block if I were going to drop any more (not planning to, but... with this season?). We are really eating good this season I think. Tons of quality shows that I want to watch, and that's even without getting too far into the high profile sequels, which I seem to have mostly dodged. Hopefully the rest of 2026 can keep up to this standard because... wow.

Since then, it felt like reality righted itself again. This is how it should be.
Chapter. *One* chapter was skipped, and that's because it wasn't at all related to the episode at hand, so it would have messed up the pacing entirely to cover that one and then hard switch into a completely different subplot. It looks like that skipped chapter should be in the next episode instead.
Not even the first time the anime's done this; season 2 started straight on the Hidden Inventory arc instead of starting with chapter 64 (the actual "next chapter" after where season 1 left off) and instead adapted that chapter in season 2 episode 6.
Yeah, I know Medalist has not aired yet, but I am sure it will be great still. No D or F tier because I simply never started anything I was not even slightly interested in.

I’ve realized that I get confused or lost pretty easily when watching sometimes, to deal with this, I’ve developed a habit: I watch full story recaps on YouTube before I even start the actual show.
So far, I’ve watched summaries for Dragon Ball (Classic to Super), Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Death Note, Jujutsu Kaisen, Gintama, and even Neon Genesis Evangelion.
I feel like knowing the plot beforehand helps me focus. Since I already know the "what," I can relax and enjoy the "how"—the animation, the voice acting, and the iconic fight scenes that a 20-minute summary can't fully capture.
